Duke wants me to fill out this form and send it back to them, but I'm having a bit of trouble with it.

www.duke-energy.com/pdfs/Non-Res-Load-Sheet.pdf

Has any other Duke customers here had to complete this? How do I estimate Kw for my receptacles? I plan on putting 20A outlets out there, so does that make a difference too?

Ugh! Why didn't the engineer just do this for me?

they want you to go around and fill in all the name plate data from the equipment you have in the building. i wouldn't worry about future loads as they will deliver what ever load your panel will accept.

Looks like they are lumping you in with the commercial type loads. If you can get someone with a brain to talk to you it should be pretty simple to just tell them your panel size and they should size your transformer based on that info. Unless, you have a really big load with a ton of big motors that is. That's how we would do it here, but we are not nearly as large as Duke Energy so you'll probably have to work a bit to find intelligent life.

Tell us what YOU are doing. Is this a commercial building? Is it located on your residential property? Commercial property somewhere other than your residence. I assume this is supposed to have its own meter. Is it possible for you to power this off of your house service. How big is the building? are you going to have lots of machinery (machine shop?) in it, or is it a simple garage?

It appears they are going to hook you up as a commercial customer at the commercial rate$$$$.

It's for a detached 30x40 less than 100 ft from the house. Will have a small workshop, but no large machines like a lathe or milling machine. Largest items I foresee is 220 compressor and AC-225-S welder.

House is 200 amp and my main panel is already full. Duke said the minimum they'd run underground is 200 amp, so engineer wants to run new from the pole.

That sheet looks like it's for a non-residential service. If you have basically a residential detached garage, it should be pretty simple for them to run a line based on your panel size. Really they don't even do that, it's 200 amp minimum around here.

Call the number on the bottom of form. Explain your situation. They may just need your total load to size a separate can. Which means separate meter which means additional charges. You may want to look into other options using only 1 meter. Prob save money in long run.

I too am with Duke power. They made me fill out a load sheet as well. My electrician filled it out for me. He put down 20,000kw Load. I can send you the sheet if you would like. Just PM me you email.

Good luck.

I had to do it to get my service hooked up. My garage is billed at a business rate. I just took the data plate info off all my big loads and added them up. I added a bunch of buffer load and turned it in. They just want to make sure the transformer and wiring to your garage is the right size.

Thanks for the tips everyone! Called the engineer back with questions and worked through the sheet with him.

Its back at Duke now working through their bureaucracy and scheduling.

good luck with the Bureaucracy. I have been working with them since August of 2012. Still waiting on a decision. A lot of red tape. Especially since my shop should be charged the "farm" rates. I hope to have is resolved very soon.

Unless something has changed, a detached garage on your personal property with it's on service connection will not be put on a Residential Rate in the Duke System. If I recall correctly, there is a monthly base price for the service and additional charges for any power used.

Which is true with virtually any residential service. The difference being in the rates. The monthly charge may be $39 instead of $14 and the kwh charge may be .018 instead of .013.

If I had been told mine was going to be commercial rates (Southern Company) I would have fed off the house and spent a lot more money up front. Thankfully I didn't have to. I was told by the engineer that it would be commercial rates, but the lady in the office who set up the account said the engineer was not the one controlling that and didn't know the rules.

How did things work out with Duke Power? I just met with them and they are going to hook mine up for free. New poll with transformer and then run under ground to the shop. I did run a trench with pipe for them so most of the digging is done. now I will have power in 5 weeks. Total wire wun will be just under 300 feet from the last pole on the road. I had to moan a bit but got him to agree to free in the end.

Good luck with yours.
