I missed this previously too. Beautiful land, and I love your plans! Sorry to hear about the robbery, that really *****, and puts a dampener on things. On the door opening up to the outdoor area, my parents recently built and considered similar options. They ultimately opted for a multi panel sliding door - seals up nice, is quiet, and was relatively affordable. it does mean you still have one door/panel width that projects into the opening though, but those folding doors often take a up a fair bit of space to one side of the opening too. Just another option to consider anyway.

In regards to the door, we looked at the option of using a single sliding door and a multi panel door and as you mentioned they are quiet, seal well and was on par price wise with the door we chose. I think if we had a larger entry space we might have gone with that option but the folding panel gave us a few more feet of open space when fully extended. I am not sure how much the door will actually get used but if my better half wants the door she gets the door! It took me a long time to understand the real meaning of compromise...if I don't want it but she does... WE compromise and she gets its!

Yeah, theft was tough to choke down as I was a wee bit pissed. However, I decided I am not going to let those little B#$%ard's get in the way of enjoying the property and shop. Thanks for checking out the thread.

Well today was delivery day but I was half expecting a call telling me that there would be another delay but lo and behold two large flatbed trucks showed up!
I was warned many times by folks who had built pole barns that you will get an uneasy feeling that you just wrote a very big check and this was all they dropped off?? I now know what they meant...
So, since the last time I posted plans I have had to make some modifications to the size and scope of the Barndominium. Originally, the building was going to be 40' x 100' but we scaled it back to 42' x 80'. Primary reason was costs but I also decided I wanted to split my woodworking and metal shop/tractor storage into two buildings. For the reason why...keep reading...
The living quarters remain unchanged.
Here is a diagram of the electrical for the living space. Lots of fans.... it is Texas after all....
The right side porch and windows on the end have been removed....
Which changes the elevation....
And the reason why is that I am going to build a 24' x 36' outdoor kitchen in a Southern style dog trot like the picture below between the barndominium and my new 30' x 42' metal shop.
The outdoor kitchen will actually be able to be enclosed by having glass garage doors that roll up and I will build in a stone fireplace. I decided to go this route as I will be able to build a bunk house into the metal shop so that when I start my woodworking classes up again this will be the place for students to eat and sleep. By splitting the two spaces I get more room in the end. It will also allow me to build this without going into debt which speeds up plans for retirement.
That's all I have for the moment..... but at least its finally started!

Thanks Brent, I think the two shops will give everything I want in size I just hope the logistics of walking between the two to complete projects is not more of a pain than I realize. Due to the influence of this site and others like WeldingWeb I want to incorporate more metal into my designs and maybe even add some teaching of combining the two when I feel my metals skills have reached a certain level. Thanks for checking out the progress.

i think this is going to be great. it looks like you will have more total shop space PLUS an indoor/outdoor kitchen. how is this costing you less? either way, it looks like you will need more fans!

Thanks Jim. In regards to the costs, the whole project will cost more in the end but I will have much more square footage for not that much more expense. I was blown away how much adding a porch to the building cost. By removing the right side porch the savings from less concrete, lumber, siding and labor (higher day rate due to my location) I can almost build the complete outdoor Kitchen. I was going to build a separate barn for my tractor but by combining the two into my metal shop I end up with bunk house and a larger metal shop than I initially planned for in the original design and drawings. My wife liked the idea of the kitchen so she was sold and it went from there.
As for the fans... its like clamps.... you can never have enough!!

I just wanted to say thanks and Merry Christmas to all the great folks who make up the GJ. It's hard to imagine a better day than waking up with a cup of coffee served by my better beautiful wife, opening presents with my kids and than me getting to spend some time reading and perusing through the GJ getting inspired for that "next" project. The only thing better might be doing the same thing next in a new shop! Merry Christmas everyone!

Duker I agree with you on frustrating delays on getting a pole barn built. I ordered a 50x80 in September and it is still not up. One excuse after another from the contractor. I am on my second contractor and it does not seem to be working out to well. I will not be around for the next week or so but when I get back I will be down for a couple of months anyway. I like your drawing on the layout you chose. For now if it ever gets up I will just have 4000 sq ft of space to decide how and what to do where. Look forward to updates on your build.

I can definitely relate to the delays. I received word today that the crew starts this next Monday so we shall see if that comes true. I hope you can get your contractor issues squared away and get going on your shop soon.

Looks good! I know how frustrating it is working on a project like this. We also had to fire a contractor because of so many setbacks and there unwillingness to work with us on getting a final floor plan with elevation drawings with exact window & door placements. Our barndominium is up now but we still haven't gotten the overhead doors installed because they ordered them wrong twice!

Hey, thanks for stopping by! I was just checking out your build thread as your wall height is similar to mine and it was great to see the scale in real life so to speak. I wish my wife and I had the foresight to build something like this at your age.... I am just a tad older..but not quite as old as Shorty! I subscribed to the build as I will be curious to see how you finish it out.

Nice project!
On the folding doors, consider Nanawall. I managed a project where the architect specified it. Once properly leveled and secured, it was a very nice system. Expensive system as I recall.

Larry, thanks for the link. That project was amazing. Just a tad over my budget for the Bardominium! LOL. I ordered a different door already as I had to get it here to be rough framed out so the crew knew where to set the posts. I was able to check the quality before I ordered it so hopefully I will be happy with that decision. You are correct about those doors being expensive. None of the Mfg.'s are cheap although the quality between makers has quite a big disparity. I appreciate you thinking about my build and taking the time to post the information.
Happy day duker my shop was done on Wednesday 1-25-17. By done I mean four walls and a roof. I need to get the cement slab done. Three sectional doors, then I can begin with electric, water, etc. I am in seventh heaven with my 50x80 pole barn. Now to wait my six to eight weeks so I can begin the fit.

And what's the story behind you teaching woodworking classes?. How often do you do this and what would be your typical curriculum, finish carpentry, cabinet making, sculpture?.

Congrats Walt! That is great news. I am about 3 days they say from finishing the shell. Maybe we can get a package deal for electrical and plumbing! [emoji3]

Almost, if you don't count concrete, plumbing, electrical, and some other small miscellaneous items! [emoji3]
My wife saw the building for the first time yesterday and I was a little nervous as it is tall....I mean really really tall....lol. The good news is she loved it which was a relief as she was having a hard time seeing/conceptualizing the image that has been stuck in my head for a long time.
As for the classes, I am going to start teaching cabinet/furniture making again. I will also bring in folks from around the country to teach their specialized skills like marquetry or carved turnings etc.. In addition, I will teach combining metal and wood so I need to get this shop done so I can get my metal shop underway. The goal is to have 2-4 students at a time (staying on premises ultimately in the Bunkroom above the metal shop) over a weekend. I am hoping to start some 1 day classes maybe at the end of the year to get back into the groove of teaching. The long term goal is to try and retire a little early and have some fun in retirement teaching something I love.

I had taken half a day off from work so that I could watch them set the posts but by the time I got there they were almost done. It took them just a few minutes to drop a post in, laser level it and begin to fill with concrete.
