That's so cool looking. I really like the color selection and the coppola's are a very nice touch. I take it those were prefabbed and brought out or did they do that detail work on site?.

That is coming along amazingly well Duke.

Lookin' good.

Mike.

Thanks Mike. Its been a long time coming. I hope to get the interior living space finished out by June and then I can start working on the workshop.

Thanks, I am a little partial to the color combo as well as its one of the few colors I can actually see! :)

The cupolas are built at Morton's facility then sent in sections where they are assembled on site. The guys installing them even made sure the weather vanes pointed North! I have to say these guys have been great to work with on this project. You pay a premium for a Morton building but the workmanship has been much better than I was anticipating.

I don't know about that, you have a pretty nice place underway yourself!

Looks awesome Duker, I think you have made a few of us very envious.

Cheers GB

Hey GB, I am just trying to keep up with you! :) you have actually been getting some projects done in your shop!

Wow, that's just awesome.

Thanks Gerard, I am looking forward to getting to the point of actually working on the shop side.

Man, jealous, envious, dreaming. Guess I need to get off my **** and see if I can make my barndomimum a reality.

So looking forward to this build. So I guess 3 lofts; house, woodshop and future bunk area. Did I tell you I'm so looking forward to your build?

Hey, thanks for stopping by! I was just checking out your build thread as your wall height is similar to mine and it was great to see the scale in real life so to speak. I wish my wife and I had the foresight to build something like this at your age.... I am just a tad older..but not quite as old as Shorty! I subscribed to the build as I will be curious to see how you finish it out.

Duker you sure have a really nice city house for a 28 year. :p

I guess with the holidays and visits to doctors I've missed the plan changes. So the porches kind of have a poor cost/value ratio?
I guess the dogtrot will be on the wood shop end? Looking at historical dogtrot house design, it is just like a Florida Cracker house. My original design was to have a dogtrot carport between living quarters and shop. I showed my wife your current build and she likes it, especially the wrap around porch.

can't wait to see the 1,000sqft loft

Thanks for stopping in, the loft on the living space will be finished out with some built in beds and a TV area for the kids and their friends. I am not sure what I am going to do with the loft on the workshop side yet.

nice place. looking forward to seeing the rest.

Thank you, I appreciate you checking out the thread.

Looking good Duker:beer:

Thanks CB, I feel derelict as I have missed the latest news on you and the shop. I need to stop in and see what you have been up to....

Shorty, Let me answer the first statement for you... yes you need to get off your **** and start building your version! :)

There have been some days working recently where my body wished it was 28 again.... what's sad is I probably have underwear that old!

As for the porches, they were an expensive part of the building but for me a necessary addition. When you consider the porch is over 1600 square feet of concrete and add on the posts, framing, roof and soffit etc it's like another building by itself. :eyecrazy:

You are correct on the dog trot, it will be between the wood shop and the metal shop. So it will be a smaller building 10-12' walls (versus 18') used as an outdoor kitchen and gathering spot. I have always wanted to build a saloon style bar and I am thinking I finally will have my chance. You will have an invite to come anytime to "belly up" to the bar!

Looking great Duker. Incredible progress in such a short amount of time.

Thanks Dan, the building once they started went up much faster than I was anticipating. I have been scrambling to coordinate with plumbers and electricians to get some work done before they closed in the soffit on the porch and to prepare for the slab. I will be working on it today installing some beefed up joists to hang 6' ceiling fans for the porch while the electrician comes behind me to wire the fans and can lights.

That's going to be an amazing building! Can't wait for updates! Nice job planning this!

Thanks! Updates will be a little sporadic for the next couple of weeks as I am trying to get the subfloor plumbing and dust collection finished in preparation of the slab pour.

No idea how I missed this thread until today, but I'm glad I popped in there now so I can claim post #100!:D

Great looking building, land, waterfront area...I love it all. Your idea for an open kitchen area sounds really cool too. I'm going to be checking back in on your progress, thanks for taking us all along for the ride!

Oh, and to save you time, I don't have a build thread, so no need to look. I just love coming here to bask in all the great ideas & build photos that folks like you take the time to share. And a great forum it is...:rocker:

Congrats on the 100th post and thanks for coming along on the ride! I also love the GJ for the ideas and inspiration.

As for you not having a build thread..... you might not have one now but if you hang around the GJ long enough you will catch GJitus ... a disease that will convince you that you need to build a new shop and that it must be filled with more new tools! :) It's the only disease I know where no one wants a cure!

Dogtrot, outdoor kitchen, glass garage doors, glass accordion doors. I have to subscribe to this one. All of the above are elements I'd want in my next home.

Thanks Rudi, the farm as we call it has become my little sanctuary. I am looking forward to be able to head out there on a Friday and just play in the shop all weekend. Texans would agree that this is God's country but having been to your side of the pond there are some beautiful spots in your part of the world. Victor Harbor in South Australia is like our Austin but with an ocean view! My grandparents had a ranch there and I loved to visit.

Welcome Voi, so far the build is pretty close to the image I had built stick by stick in my head. I wanted to incorporate a lot of elements especially those that would make it a fun place to entertain or just hang out.

Thanks for checking out the thread guys.

Little update on the building.... I have concrete!

Some rain delays put us a little behind but the floors are in.

Before the concrete was poured and the porch soffit installed I was able to get the joists in for hanging the planned 6' ceiling fans. I used 2" x 6's" since I had to span 12' to keep from sagging. I also had to recess mount the electrical boxes so that they would be flush to the soffit as the bottom of the 2" x 6" joists are also where the soffit was attached.

View media item 84344
I was also able to get the recessed can lights installed and wired up. There are 14 recessed lights on the porches. It was fun trying to explain to my wife why we wanted to not have can lights where the fans were to keep from getting the strobe light effect...or so many it would look like an airport runway...

View media item 84346
One of the items my wife wanted on the porch was a 4 mount daybed swing and a regular 2 mount swing. The latter being a real 2-4 person "swing." Based on the truss load ratings I should be good with the combined weight of the swing and four of my oversized friends! However, this will be for my wife and her friends (and just for the record honey should you ever read this...you and your friends are petite!) The fabbed some brackets that sandwich the two joists from and back for extra strength. You can see the galvanized heavy duty hinges if you squint...

View media item 84347
Here is a shot of the start of my in ground dust collection for my table saws and the other for the jointer and planer. My plumber went a little over board in how deep he went. He later came back in raised up the level while still keeping the elbow slopes minimal. I was also able to run my in slab electrical boxes but I guess I didn't get a shot of those.

View media item 84345
Here is the rest of the floor being prepped.

Here is my wood shop side.

Here is the front porch with the soffit installed and concrete done. Hopefully the large sliding door gets installed this next week.

View media item 84342
I was also able to get my drainage in before they poured the backdoor section. Mike aka "Zmotorsports" highlighted a Flo-well drainage system in his thread and it was just the ticket for my need and moving water away from the back of my building. I used my post hole digger to drill 4 holes to loosen up the dirt and speed up the process of digging a 4ft diameter hole to drop in the Flo-well drain

I am hoping to start on the interior by the middle of April. I am still working on bids from contractors for the living space.

Now that's making some headway bud, congrats and finally getting your underground down and the slab finished. Funny over the last couple of weeks while watching mikes shop getting so much done I had thought about bumping yours to see how you were coming along. Obviously you've been a damn busy boy yourself. So now that the worst of it is over how long do you think it'll take to get the interior framing finished?

Yeah Mike's place is rolling. He is going to be done and in his shop before you know it! I am hoping to get framing started in April as I am still working on final quotes. If all goes well I hope to have the living space done by August and then I can start in on the shop side. It will be nice to be able to have a place to stay for the weekend instead of driving back and forth.

I know you've mentioned it before but I've forgotten. How far away is it from your place. When I was finally ready to purchase a commercial building for my business I had one hell of an offer from a good friend who was retiring to buy his. Problem for me was even though the location was good for my business it was an hours drive from my house without traffic. So I passed and got something ten minutes away.

Certainly once your able to end the commute and stay for a day or two at a time this will becomes so much more productive. I've said it before and sure as hell will say it again, but I'm stoked for you seeing it progress. In the last few months I thought this year would become our exodus to Texas. But I recently picked up one year worth of contracts with potential for that series of jobs to last over three years. So if that comes to fruition I won't be bailing anytime soon. But when I do please keep an extra set of plans for me so I can just copy and not need to put any thought into the perfect set up. :p

That is looking FANTASTIC Duke. I love the suspended seating idea. That will be nice to sit and relax after a long day's work.

Plans plus any improvements and ex my mistakes available anytime! :)

As for travel time it is 1 hour from my driveway to the front gate. However, you add up packing and unpacking the car and it adds up.

Sounds like good news on the orders for business. You might want to hurry up and get down here though as we might have built our own wall to keep out more Californians by then! :)

Thanks Mike, I saw the pictures of your slab and that you already have lumber on site which Is great news. If your weather holds out you might be ahead of schedule and finish early!

I think my wife and I will enjoy the porch swings. I built one for her for our house front porch and she uses it all the time to sit on the porch with her friends and neighbors.

Sounds like a little piece of Heaven Duke. Now that we have a covered deck at our new home my wife is wanting a couple of patio chairs to sit outside in the evenings after a long day or sit outside on weekend mornings and enjoy a cup of coffee. To be honest I think that sounds great myself.

Keep the progress pics coming bud.

Mike.

Mike, it might be as close to heaven as I get! :)

As for chairs for you and your better half to sit on the deck and have a cup of morning coffee.... I think on one of your future road trips with the Z-RV you might need to come to my wood shop and try your hand at making a couple of custom creations!

Congrats on the finished floor. Makes camping out a lot better. I assume the builder is done and you will use local contractors for interior.

Look forward to the interior updates.

Congrats on getting your floor in and done, it looks great! That's a big step to getting your build finished. :)

Thanks, it was a big step, we are almost complete with shell with just the large sliding door to install and the garage door.

Thanks Shorty, yes we will be using a local contractor to finish out the interior. We are down to two contractors and I am just trying to finalize bids. Hopefully I get those back over the next couple of weeks.

Awesome, that concrete looks great. One step closer.

Thanks Gerard, another item off of the check list!

Thanks for stopping by guys I appreciate it.

Checking in to see how you're doing Duke. Man that is spacious. It's going to be fantastic to have all that space (even though it'll fill up too quickly)

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress now that April is here. I wish I were a little closer so I could give you a few hours of neighborly help.

Hey Dan, thanks for dropping by. Progress has been a little slow the last couple of weeks as we needed some small items finished and the last two doors installed (garage and large folding door) to complete the dry in. There is a few punch list items left for shell but we are ready to begin interior construction.

Good news for the week is 1.) we selected a contractor and will meet next Saturday to go over final details and 2.) now that the building is dried in I can begin to move equipment from my garage into the new workshop. I would take you up on your offer for some neighborly help but this is the time you will be glad you are many many miles away as I will be moving some big pieces of equipment into the shop like my Wadkin sliding table saw, planer, jointer etc.. I may not have any friends left after moving all this stuff! :) Thanks again for checking on the progress.
