Duke, glad to hear it's all dried in and you can start moving equipment.

Looking forward to progress pics.

Mike.

Thanks Mike! I was up yesterday grading my road to take out some of the ruts from all of the rain we had so that I don't bounce the trailer around as much when moving the equipment up.

I checked my slab yesterday for moisture (plastic taped down to see any condensation) and there was none to my surprise so I am debating whether to do my planned wood floor (thinking oak or LL pine on treated 4 x 8 T&G plywood base) now before moving the equipment into the shop versus and having to work around it later. I would really like to get the equipment out of my garage so that I can work on some metal projects I need to complete but it would be nice to be able to knock out the floor now before I have to move everything twice. Decisions decisions.....

I am anxious to get going on projects as well but I told myself not until the shop is finished will I move in and start working.

I did the same thing on my last one and don't regret it for a moment. I have a couple of friends on the other hand who moved equipment in as soon as they had electrical going. One never made it past insulation even after 25 plus years now and the other sheetrocked and painted about a third of his after about a year of being in it but never moved the tools or equipment to finish the remainder. He is now moving and finding out he has to finish it before the sale. He's frustrated because he put up with it for fifteen years like it is but is finishing it off for someone else to enjoy.

I say finish it completely then move stuff in and enjoy it without having to work around things, which always seem to faster anyways.

Good luck Duke.

Mike.

Damn it Mike... there you go throwing common sense and experience into the problem....!! Since it's raining here today I started to price flooring and sub flooring. I am going to at least do the floor before I move equipment into the shop. Thanks for the reality check! [emoji3]

It's like finding a show on Netflix that's already a few seasons in and you get to binge
watch to catch up on it... just found this thread and love it. So happy for you and the family.

Glad you have dried in and have the interior contractor. Look forward to seeing the wood shop with a wood floor.

And to add to Mike's comments. Hint, hint, four years later.

Hey where have you hiding. Great to have you pop in! Progress will be slow for the next few weeks until we get the contract worked out for the interior but hopefully I will be able to post some shots in binge fashion!

Shorty, but that is some fine looking drywall why would you cover it up with paint........ hmmm wait a minute....something is familiar...drywall, no paint....did you steal that from Gerard?

I hate to admit it but it probably would be a long time before I got to the floor if I didn't get it done now. Thanks for stopping in and adding to some sage advice.

Do the floor now before ya move in duker. I struggle with the cart before the horse on damn near every project and have to literally force myself to just get it done and over with. Cause everytime I have tried getting back to it, it never gets done or like the other story, need to finish it so I can move out. Funny part is as much as I struggle with doing it the right way, I've never regretted it either.

Ok Cam, now you are just piling on....! [emoji3]. You guys are right, I know I need to get this stuff done now. It is hard however, fighting the urge to rush in especially with how long it has been since I have had a regular shop and have spent roughly the last decade thinking and planning for it....

I couldn't agree more and I have only been without mine for 6 months so far. Still looking at least another 2 and this flat *****. All I can offer is to look at what you will have when it is done. That is all that keeps me moving forward at this point, knowing what my wife and I will have and that it will ALL be worth it.

Good luck Duke and hang in there.

About time for an update isn't it? Great build. Did Morton do the concrete work too?

^^^I agree. Duke how about an update. Preferably with pictures.

Mike.

^^^^+3???????????????????What's going on Duke?

Sorry guys was traveling and just got back Thursday night so heading out there this morning to see how the interior framing is coming along.

In answer to the concrete, Morton subs it out to a company (in this case from Waco) but it falls under Mortons warranty. The guys did a great job and they did some extra work for me for a price I couldn't pass up.

I will post some pic's later this evening or tomorrow. Thanks for checking in!

Quick update on the Barndominium progress... and by quick I mean not much has been accomplished over the past few weeks. Between weather and my interior contractor having a death in the family progress came to a screeching halt.

Morton finished the dry in a few weeks back with the installation of the garage door.

The large accordion door was installed. It opens and closes beautifully but damn was it expensive... it made mama very happy however...

I wish there was more to show but that's the progress so far. I have been taking the extra base that was removed from the concrete pour to use in regrading my road into the farm.

Looking good. The interior will hopefully move along a little better. I'm glad to see things are showing up instead of walking off. Camera has a good picture. Build on.

I have a big problem with your little piece of heaven you have developing there... It stems from the river at the bottom. You see I would be hard pressed to not go fly fishing and we all know that if your fly fishing your not working in the workshop... See the problem here?

No absolutely fantastic. If I could describe My dream little "farm" then I would just need to show someone images of yours. While not that big into hunting having that river there, The space, The trees, and Barn/House man you've landed in the honey!!! Even if cash were plentiful I wouldn't be doing something like that here my side. We have Incidences where guys have come home to their holiday farms and the ENTIRE Container has been taken contents and all...

Keep up the incredible...

Looking good. Main thing is that Mama is happy.

Very true... life is always much better when momma is happy! Thanks for stopping in.

Yes some things do slow down the progress even though the photos show other wise.

Thanks, the crew was back out there today so hopefully they will have the downstairs framing done this week and the trusses in for the lofts by weeks end.

Looking good!

Thanks Shayne.

Thanks Shorty. Yeah I hope this stuff sticks around. I have put enough cameras in and other deterrents to make it a tougher target. That camera pic is actually my rear license shot so I can catch you coming and going!

LOL... there is nothing in the box just yet... it's a box to store stuff. I bought it at the last Ritchie Bros Auction.

Knyte, thank you for your comments and for checking out the thread. I have to admit my view and mood of the world changes when I am out there. I had a tough last week traveling, meeting clients etc and Saturday riding my tractor moving dirt of all things and the world was good again. It cracks my wife up as I have my tunes going and a big smile on my face.

Hey Duke, that's one hell of a storage box. I like it. And I'm assuming the picture is not at your place unless you've started collecting what looks like pumps.:willy_nil

How's things coming along?

Hey Dan, sorry for the delay I didn't see the reply. The storage cabinet will be a nice addition to the shop storage that I am planing.

You were correct that was not my place! :). I would have loved to have one of those pumps but they would have probably not been happy if I chucked one in the back of my truck as that pic was from the auction yard where I got the cabinet.

Man I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. Great stuff here!

Subscibed!

Carry on........

I appreciate you stopping in and checking out the thread! I will have some more pictures for an update hopefully tomorrow.

I have been busy cutting over a thousand pounds of steel for a project for the Barndominium! That project had been keeping me busy as I am under a time crunch.

Thanks Mike, I am looking forward to being able to get it into the shop.

The progress on my shop has been frustrating as the pace of work has slowed to a crawl on the Barndominium as my interior contractor has not communicated with their subs and that has caused some mistakes and redo' etc.. add weather delays from their other projects and we are behind schedule by a month already. I was hoping to get my floor in the shop by now and equipment moved in but their scaffolding etc is still in there waiting on electrical and ceiling framing.
This forced me to get another storage unit to move my equipment again... so that I can move around in my garage to build the railings for the lofts spaces. Sooooo looking forward to being done!

I need to stop in and catch up on your build as you must almost be done by now.

Thanks for checking in Rudi. I don't have any other pictures of the cabinet yet but I will try and take some to post. The cabinet does have some tool box style ballbearing slide drawers inside the cabinet. The cabinet is stout and will fit nicely with 4 other similar storage cabinets that I have sitting in storage waiting to go into the new shop.

Not much going happening on my build either Duke. I am so, so close I can taste it but similar issues as yours. Worked slowed to a crawl and piss poor communication between the GC and sub's. Not even contacting or scheduling the sub's until the previous step is complete is utter nonsense. If I did my job or worked like that I would be unemployed.

All that is left on mine is garage doors, heater and insulation then the final inspection can take place. They need to come back and install the last gutter and downspout because for some reason they only installed one and plaster the foundation and is complete. Should be a couple days work is all and nothing happened last week except the installation of one gutter and downspout.:dunno:

Frustrating to say the least, I can relate to your situation. I hope things start to pick up for ya.

I think its just the Mid Year Slump... The slowdown appears to not be a Localised occurrence. I havn't been in my shop for almost two months now... I still have one... I think... Have a kitchen tear down to complete this weekend coming... So going to get some shop time... But not on anything I really want to focus on...

Just keep Swimming...

A great thread to read, I only got 1/2-way thru today, but will catch-up to the end shortly. Your site looks like a place that you can work and retire-to without any issues. The site plan is impressive, and your family is lucky to be able to make it work for you, congratulations.

I like the Houston area, and though I live in south FL, I visited the Houston area repeatedly with my GF, that was quite awhile-ago, and now I'm securely anchored in FL. My wife and I will be retiring during the next year, I'm already collecting my full SS, and previously retired years-ago from a first-responder job. I'm on my second pension eligibility now.

I'm sure that when I read the rest of the thread, I'll see what your choices were for the opening walls. We did a ranch re-model to a mid 1950's home in an area of metro Miami where Jeb Bush lives, and anyone who follows politics will know of the Bush family connections to TX, Houston, and metro Miami FL.

We looked at replacing an 18' 3-panel sliding glass door system, not tempered, original to the home, looking-out to the pool deck. We considered La Cantina, but chose the nanawall system. The nanawall is HVHZ-rated (high-velocity hurricane zone) for 175 mph gusts. That's what you need under the coastal requirements in Florida now.

The nanawall looked to have better thermal breaks than the La Cantina, and to me the extrusions also appeared to be more-robust. Everyone who sees our nanawall is very-impressed as you can open it to its 18 ft wide expanse in probably 40 seconds. It definitely makes the home bring the outside 'inside,' though we usually don't keep it open much. One door in the center is like an exterior door, and they pin closed at the top and bottom, with a very reassuring mechanical action. Outside noise is very attenuated, it's 'high-E' glass, and yes, it was expensive.

About the burglary, I'm glad it was a burglary and not a robbery. As in Florida, a lot of people in the state carry CCW permits. Now in FL, it's 1 out of 20 who legally-carries, among residents, so chances are that if you choose to flaunt your firearm in the commission of a felony, there are multiple people in an urban area who are also armed. People are shot here all the time, unfortunately, on both sides of the law. One of the LEO's who worked in the same municipality as me was murdered when he went outside his apt. to see what was going-on one night, decades-ago, and unfortunately, the murder is still unsolved. I hope your cameras record some useful footage if they decide to return.

I'll finish the remaining half tonight, and I hope it's all good news as I return to the narrative.

Update: OK, I went back to where I left-off, and went forward to the end. I saw where you decided on the La Cantina folding glass wall, where we chose the nanawall. Yours came-out very well-done, and as you said, 'mama's happy.' That's how it is in our house with the nanawall, 'mama's happy.' Yes they are expensive, but everyone who sees it has very favorable comments. Our pool patio nanawall has a couple more panels than yours and about a seven foot overhang roof, providing plenty of shade, important because the exposure is a southern one, and without the shade, the patio would be of not much use in the summer because of the direct sun. We've tentatively-agreed to do a phase II on the re-model of the house, to add a summer kitchen at the west end of the pool patio, and already stubbed-in a natural gas line to the edge of the wall on that side of the house/deck. When we were buying the kitchen appliances for the re-model (Wolf 6-burner, Sub-Zero side-by-side w/a bottom freezer, a separate Sub-Zero beverage center, and Meile steam convection oven) we had to add a natural gas line from down the street, as no one to us on the block had natural gas from where the gas line was at the end of the block. Luckily our immediate neighbor also wanted NG in her re-model, so we split the cost of the supply run. I assume out there you run LP gas, just-like Hank Hill recommends on "King of the Hill." The appliance distributor who sold us our appliances is also a dealer for Kalamazoo grills, and if you are a fan of crime fiction on cable, and watch 'Ray Donovan," you know Jon Voight as Ray's father also has a high appreciation for the Kalamazoo. Like the La Cantina or the nanawall, the Kalamazoo is a step-up. Will one end-up in the summer kitchen? It would make a good retirement present. We'll see.

Nice project!

On the folding doors, consider Nanawall. I managed a project where the architect specified it. Once properly leveled and secured, it was a very nice system. Expensive system as I recall.
https://www.nanawall.com/

Here is a link to the project. The doors open from the glass pavilion so that there is full exposure on 3 of 4 sides.
