Just checking in to see how things are going. Hopefully better than your last post.

Shorty, a little progress but still moving very slow. I have been busy working on the cable railings for both lofts house and workshop. I will have some pictures this weekend of the finished electrical and some progress pics of the railings.

Thanks for checking in....

A great thread to read, I only got 1/2-way thru today, but will catch-up to the end shortly. Your site looks like a place that you can work and retire-to without any issues. The site plan is impressive, and your family is lucky to be able to make it work for you, ..... Will one end-up in the summer kitchen? It would make a good retirement

Driftpin, thank you for taking the time to read through the thread and for your comments. The property has become our little refuge and we feel very fortunate to be able now to build on it and enjoy it.

The choice of door was my wife's and she is very happy with how it turned out. The nanawall is a very nice door but the extra budget required for it ruled it out for her.

Thank you for the recommendation on the grill, I will check it out. The way our current progress is going the outdoor kitchen won't be until next year so I have time to plan and research. It will also give me some time for my wallet to heal!

Again, thank you for the comments and suggestions and for stopping by.

Thanks for the info Brent. Once the dust settles and if I still need some I may have to go on the hunt for a couple.

Mike

Mike, those cabinets are sold semi annually at the auction on Redwood in North Salt Lake.

Mike, it looks like you are all set for cabinets now with your latest acquisitions but those cabinets like Brent suggested can be found at auctions all over the country. Once I saw the quality I have been keeping an eye out for them at local auctions. The different styles can be seen on alibaba.

Progress has been slow on the Barndominium but last week the electricians (great guys who I would highly recommend) finished up and all I have left is the hook up from the utility company.

I needed to upgrade to a 320 AMP meter box as I have 2-200 amp panels for the shop alone and 1 200 AMP panel for the living quarters.

View media item 73328
Here is what the outside configuration looks like...

View media item 73330
On the shop side since I wont have my interior walls in for awhile so the electricians wired it up so that all I would have to do is remove the box from the OSB wall and attach to the framing I put in.

View media item 73322
The spray insulation is in and has already made a difference inside the building even on the shop side. Here is a pic of what will be my workbench wall on the shop. The shop loft is above this area.

View media item 73331

The spiral staircase to the shop loft is installed as well as the living quarters. On the house side I am thinking about overlaying some Cherry risers for the stairs.

View media item 73327
View media item 73337
Here is a shot of where I am installing the metal posts for the stainless cable railing. These posts will have a Cherry sleeve over them and then a Cherry hand rail. The shop side will just be painted metal with a wood hand rail. The posts are 3/16" tube with a cap and 4 bolt base plate welded on and then have a mounting base plate installed under the floor. The posts are very solid. I was in a rush to get them done as they couldn't sheet rock until installed. There are 17 posts in the house loft and 10 for the shop loft.

View media item 73333
Here is the other side of the house loft.

View media item 73335
The shop lights are installed. I have 36 can lights which will have 5K LED bulbs on dimmers. I had to go pretty bright as the interior walls and floor will be pine so it absorbs quite a bit of light. There are 12-5k LED can lights on the ceiling of the bench area on dimmers.

View media item 73325

The recess for the TV was framed in and I installed my mounting plates for the mantel brackets (the square steel plates) which I installed yesterday as sheetrock starts tomorrow.

View media item 73321
My wife found this mount for a mantel on Pinterest and asked if I could make it so I cut the pieces and and drilled the holes so they would match up on the mounting plates. I will weld up the bracket from 6" x 5/8" flat bar this coming weekend. The mantel will be a piece of 6" x 7" x 72" Cherry. The bolts are 7/8" just to keep the scale correct.

I spent most of the day in an airport which was actually nice as I was able to shop for some items for the barndominium and let these old bones recover from the weekend!

Thanks Cam, it is slowly coming together. I am hoping now that we are at the sheetrock stage it will pick up up the pace a bit. It looks like it will be the end of September by the time I can move equipment into the shop.

Awesome Duke. Great to see things moving along in the right direction. I like the spiral staircase, not only a space saver but attractive too.

I bet your happy with the electrical work being behind you.

Looks unbelievable sir. Very nice! Question for you about the spiral staircase, what size is it? We are also doing a spiral staircases and went from doing the smallest size one 48" to maybe going with a 60" one. Also did you have it built locally or did you order it?

Wonderful progress!

I'm still having issues (there's an understatement) envisioning what this is going to look like when completed but I'm just guessing that I'm going to be blown away when it's done.

Carry on

Thanks Shorty, as for being finished next week.... did you ever see the movie Money Pit? It's been the infamous "two" weeks since June!

Thanks Dan, the staircases came out better than I thought they would. You are correct, I am glad the electrical is done, but of all the subs we have had on the job they were the best. Great guys, who listened to what I wanted and then found a way to over deliver.

Thanks for the comments! The staircases are 60" is diameter. If you can get by with that width I would highly recommend it over the 48." The stairs were made locally and were competitive with the prices I found online.

Looks great Duke. It will be something when done.

Thanks Mike, watching you enjoy your new shop has helped remind me to see the end goal in all of this.

Thanks for checking out the progress. It's a good thing I don't photograph for a living as my ability to capture the floorplan is lacking. Even my wife has to do a double take of my pics to see which rooms are which....

The drywall is up! Seems like forever to get to this point.

Here is the view into the Kitchen and Laundry room.

A view of the fireplace with the recess for the TV.... slight issue in that they sheetrocked over my mantel mounts.

Here is the view looking back toward the kitchen and the loft above. This side of the loft has the bathroom and a storage space. The right corner is the mechanical room.

My wife was very happy with the space as I think she could finally picture the size and what it will look like in the end.

I finished up the welding of the posts for the garage loft and will try and install them this next weekend. Here is a shot before welding of the top which is 3/16" with the 3/16" post with a bevel grind.

View media item 73522
Here is a shot of the base plate that has been countersunk for 3/8"-16 flathead bolts. I was very happy to have my mill to drill all of these holes.

Kickass duker! So what's happening with the finish for the lid? Are you staying with open truss and exposed utilities?

Thanks Cam. The ceiling will be 1" x 6" tongue & groove pine. I am trying to figure out a stain color (which doesn't thrill me as I like natural wood colors as they age) but my better half wants it to look a little more aged right away so staining we will go......

Well that explains the framing ;)

I have rough sawed cedar in my den, living and master (all vaulted lids). I always liked it but about 20 some odd years ago me and a buddy did a customers 4000sqft house with huge cathedral ceilings in a stained knotty pine. It turned out absolutely gorgeous, definitely the envy of the neighborhood.

I have no doubt yours will be stunning. Good luck and have fun nailing

I just stained a bit over 100 square feet of ash tongue and groove for the loft at our cabin. I used Minwax Ipswich to get just a bit of more color than the plain white/yellow tone of the ash.

It has a bit of an orange tint to it which can take some soft woods too far in that direction, IMO. Worth trying some.

Project is looking good.

Dukes, you have to be excited. I didn't realize there are two loft areas in living quarters. This is going to be sweeeet!

Edit: looking back at floor plan. Got it.

I am farming out the ceiling to my contractor as I am getting too damn old to nail above my head....or for that matter below my waist! LOL I will be doing the walls in the workshop when I get comfortable with my layout.

Thanks for stopping in Voi. I thought about doing a base coat of orange or garnet shellac as it would give it some color, control the blotching as well as seal the knots and pitch pockets. Not sure yet what color my wife will settle on so still playing it by ear.

Shorty, the loft on the living space is about 1074 sqft. It will be where the kids and their friends hang out and sleep. On the workshop side I have 546 sqft that I am playing with in my head which might become a glassed in office and hang out space or I might make it into a display area for one off pieces I build.

Just a note on the storms..... We have survived the rain so far at my house but many of my neighbors have not been so lucky. Heading out again to do some rescue missions.

I appreciate the comments guys. I was finally was able to make it up to the Barn and all seemed to be OK with no issues other than me getting stuck in the mud and having to use the tractor to get me out.

I wanted to share a little story about the news you don't see much on TV but is out there and gives some hope to counter the daily barrage of negative news we seem to live with everyday. Yesterday was a rather unique day in Kingwood as I helped rescue with many of my neighbors over 200 people who were trapped by flood waters in their homes. In one apartment complex the water had risen so fast the water level was already three feet high in the second story. We would pull up in a boat to a second story window and pull people clutching nothing more than animals and if they were lucky a small plastic bag of whatever personal belongings they could collect. We were soon joined by members of the Cajun Navy who are Louisiana citizens who have a bass boat or Jon boat in the recovery effort.

My wife and in-laws who were visiting with us and now trapped due to the storm were thrust into action as we needed a staging area for people as they came off the boats to get dry and find transportation to a shelter. Our front porch became the command center as many of our neighbors came with towels and hot coffee they made on their gas stoves as we have no power to help in any way they could. Soon we had a system of drivers to be able to shuttle people over to Creekwood elementary which was serving as a temporary shelter.

My family was very fortunate as the water came within about a 100 yards of our home. Fortunately, my home is on the highest point of our neighborhood. This was the worst storm Kingwood has ever seen. Homes that were built back in the late 1970's that had never been flooded are now underwater.

Seeing the devastation first hand was sobering and will have an impact on our community for a long time.

The good side of all of this was that while it took a disaster to meet all of the neighbors it was great to see everyone come together and help. For one day we weren't Red or Blue people we were just Texans helping Texans with some very appreciated help of our Louisiana neighbors.

Quite the heroic act there Duke. So glad to hear you and your family are ok and I'm sure you were a Godsend to those people who were stranded.
