Great Stewards of Hope! I have relatives in the Golden Triangle that were fortunate to not have flood waters reach their homes. Currently we are getting massive amounts of rain in NW Louisiana. This storm has dumped Biblical Proportions of rain on SE TX and West LA.

About to leave work and see if I can get home. These freak rain episodes flood my 1/2 mile driveway out and it is an uncomfortable wade 1/4 mile. Brought my rubber boots to work today!

Yep don't expect any praise from the media. Great that you and the neighbors are real Americans. Bless you all.

Duker, its great that your place is ok and able to use it to help others. The news media always tries to spin things in a negative way and when things come down to it it's people helping people no matter color or race.

Wow!
I hadn't seen this thread since you were clearing the land.
Your Barndominium is looking good!
That's great you were able to help your neighbors during the flooding.

Quite the heroic act there Duke. So glad to hear you and your family are ok and I'm sure you were a Godsend to those people who were stranded.

Mike

Mike thank you for the note. Heroic is pretty far above my pay grade but it certainly felt good to be able to help. The heroes in my book are the folks whose house is flooded losing everything and they are out there helping other neighbors begin the cleanup of the houses where the water has now fallen.

Thanks guys I appreciate the comments. I spent all day yesterday helping pull carpet and sheetrock out of neighbors homes where the water has receded. My arms and back are killing me. My dad used to joke that you reach an age where you just stop doing work below waist level.... I think I have reached that age!

WOW!!! Incredible bit of news... its a pity you'd never see that as an ongoing report on popular news stations as much as you see the ongoing reporting of all the "Shock" content.

Glad to hear you made it through with the ability to assist instead of needing assistance. Karma will repay you in kind... also helps having a Un-flooded workshop still standing to assist with the rebuild I'm guessing.

I have no idea what news stations you are all watching, for the last week I have seen mostly stories about people helping, maybe change your viewing habits, try a different station. Love your build, look forward to you being able to get back to it, but there is no better tired than that coming from helping someone.

Knyte, thanks for stopping back in... I think I have bitten off more than I can chew so to speak as I have offered to help repair quite a few pieces of furniture that have been damaged. Not sure how I am going to squeeze it all in AND work on my shop!

Capterick, thanks for checking out the progress. I may have to switch news channels as it seems the last few days have been nothing but why did Trump do this, why didn't he do this...why did his wife wear high heels, yada yada.... I usually don't watch much TV so I may have a skewed point of view.... as for helping folks it is a good feeling and I have a lot of black marks from my college days to make up for...[emoji3]

Time for an update! Between helping tear out floors and walls for neighbors and friends, travel for work and misc other stuff, I was finally able to get some pics as well as get some work done on projects for the Barndominium. Here are some progress pics...

Pine tongue & groove ceiling being installed.

Thanks Cam! I think the ceiling turned out nice. My wife originally wanted to stain it but after she saw how it brightened up the place she liked it “as-is” so they just shot a clear sealer over it. It should age to a nice honey color over time.

Thanks GB, I can hardly wait to get my tools inside the shop! I have some new toys, I mean tools that I want to get up and running as soon as I can. Thanks for stopping in!

Thanks Shorty. Yeah the deadline is sort of bittersweet as we have been waiting forever to get this done but now it is becoming crunch time in trying to get everything completed as my in-laws will be moving in on that day.

Shorty, we had a good Thanksgiving, hopefully you did as well! We got the in-laws moved in and I finished some projects on both the living space and shop. I have a bunch of pics and I was hoping to have an update this coming weekend when I can check off a couple more.

Hey Duke. It's been a few months since I've been on the GJ. I'm glad to hear you made it through the flood. Sorry for all the others that weren't as fortunate as you. Your place is looking great.

Hey Dan sorry for the delay. I must have fat fingered the subscription button in tapatalk and didn’t get a notification that you had posted.

Glad to see you are back on the board.

Thanks for the note. Hopefully, I will be able to posts some pictures and an update soon.

Well... I was already to write up an update to the Barndominium only to realize I left my camera with all the photos at the barn. Since I had a few on my cell phone and so as not to be a total waste of time sitting here at the computer...here are just a few shots.

The in-laws moved into the barn just before Thanksgiving. However, my workshop was now a storage unit with all of their belongings so another container was ordered. I needed to make a pad so the tractor and I got busy clearing an area for when it arrived.

In case you have been wondering what I have been doing when not searching and posting AW Deals.... here is the plywood subfloor that has been laid down now awaiting the pine T&G flooring sitting in that large stack. You might also notice one of my newest auction purchases which I will be refurbishing a Delta Rockwell 12-14 table saw. This will be built into the table outfeed system I have designed which will also include my Wadkin sliding and SawStop cabinet saw.

View media item 78125
Here is the pine V groove paneling that will be going along the back walls between the shop and the living space. This will allow me to finish my workbenches and start moving cabinets and benches into the shop.

View media item 78126
When picking up the paneling and flooring the lumber yard had some "Sunken Cherry" which was a log that sank to the river bottom when floating logs to the mill many years ago and more recently had been fished out from the river . It has some beautiful grain and includes 4/4 to 12/4 pieces. The price was too good to pass up but now I have to figure out where I am going to store it in the meantime.

View media item 78127
I also picked up enough flooring and paneling to finish off the loft. Guess what I will be doing for Christmas....

View media item 78130
Of course, the essentials have finally been installed.... Direct TV and Hughesnet internet service. The internet speed is guaranteed to be 25Megs and has been a surprisingly consistent 35-40Megs with speeds as high as 50-60 for prolonged periods. I might be able to do some web broadcasts from the shop down the road once I am all set up.

View media item 78128
That's it for now. Hopefully I can start showing some more progress of work done in the workshop and will have some shots showing the finished (well almost) of the living space.

Thanks for the update.
AW Deals?
So a wood floor in woodworking shop? That should give it a vintage barn look. Look forward to your table saw station. I’m looking for ideas.

Hey Duker
That thing is fantastic. I know what you mean about biting off more than you can chew. But sometimes you just got to. I'm getting ready to build something very similar to yours. Mine will be 32 x 50 with a 18 x 50 upstairs. How do you like the light layout in the workshop. Could you fill me in on the spacing and wattage. That's exactly how I want to do mine, but have been worried about having enough light.

Hey Shorty, thanks for stopping by... AW = Amazon Warehouse Deals. When I stuck in meetings at work I will post deals I find on the forum.

The floor should be nice and certainly a little more forgiving on my tools and legs than the concrete! I hope to get started on building the table saw station after Christmas.

Thanks Birdman! My shop is 40’ x 42’ with the ceiling ridge line running along the 40’ side. There are 36 6” 5K LED lights spaced roughly 6’ apart. When I was doing the calculations I had to account for very little reflection from the wood ceiling and ultimately the wood v groove siding that will go up on the walls. There are also 12 6” 5K LED lights under the loft which is where my workbenches will be located and most of my hand work will be done.

So far I love the light but I really have not worked in the shop yet for any length of time except for installing the plywood subfloor. During that project I didn’t notice any lack of light which is what would have concerned me. Too much and I can always install some dimmers... too little would be a issue retrofitting into the ceiling at this point. Thanks for the comments!

Good to see what you're up to Duke. The only problem with all that material is it means work. Now you have to get make those wood piles disappear.:D

Thanks for reminding me Dan! My back winces every time I think about having to lay down all that flooring! It still hasn’t recovered from laying the plywood subfloor! If you are bored and feel the need to escape the cold north you could come on down to sunny Texas and lay down some floor.... what better way to beat the cold! [emoji14]

Looking really nice Duker, a classy shop for sure.

Enjoying watching the build.

Thanks Craig! It’s still a long way from done but slowly getting there.

I'm envious of your Cherry haul. Nice score!

Jeff, you are more than welcome to come and get some...you just have to make the road trip!

Great updates Duke. Glad to see you haven't just been screwing off.:lol_hitti

Mike, you might be giving me waaaay to much credit... !

Great place, congrats!

Thank you! I appreciate you checking out the thread.

A lot of work but place looks great. I could only wish of a shop like that.

Thanks Gerard, it has been a long time coming. As for shops, you have no idea how much you have influenced myself and others on the forum with your “shop optimization!”

Thanks for the comments guys it helps keep the motivation going!
