Thanks Shorty, I am glad to get the metal shop going. I figured might as well make this the year to build and outfit the shops so that hopefully going forward it will be Project time in the shops.

Short Update on the Barn.....

Spent Easter at my parents and I was able to knock out a few projects for my dad as well as mill the wood for the loft handrail in the Barn living space.

The wood is 8/4 cherry to match the posts that is a finished 6" x 12 feet long. It was a booger to joint as you have 8 feet hanging off of the in/outfeed table but fortunately my dad has a 1910 Newman 16" jointer that runs like a champ and made the task much easier. It is some old iron but still much better than my newer 12 inch jointer which is still stuck in storage anyway.

I still need to route a profile on them, cut, sand and mount them to the posts.

While I was gone there was progress on the new metal shop. Forms were set...

Plastic and rebar was done .... as well as a 30" x 18' x 14" deep recess added in the middle of last bay where my (hopefully soon to be) two post lift will be going....

And...finally concrete! Building is expected to arrive in a couple of weeks.

I am soooo looking forward to being able to finally have a spot for both my metal and woodworking tools as well as being able to do some basic maintenance on my vehicles and farm equipment that I never had room before in the past.

Of course, the essentials have finally been installed.... Direct TV and Hughesnet internet service. The internet speed is guaranteed to be 25Megs and has been a surprisingly consistent 35-40Megs with speeds as high as 50-60 for prolonged periods. I might be able to do some web broadcasts from the shop down the road once I am all set up.

That's it for now. Hopefully I can start showing some more progress of work done in the workshop and will have some shots showing the finished (well almost) of the living space.

Thanks for stopping by Jeff. You are right about metal and woodworking not playing nice together. In my current shop I was always afraid of sparks still active long after I quit so I was constantly running back to check on the shop to be sure there was no smoke. It will be nice to lower the risk with separate shops.

I saw you were about done with your plumbing, I might have to pick your brain about Pex as I will need to plumb the metal shop down the road.

Yeah, most the reviews on Hughes read like a horror novel. I unfortunately had no other choice in service where I was located except for very spotty 5Meg DSL. The good news is the installer my local distributor uses is fantastic. He spent about 5-6 hours on the install including burying the line, tweaking the dish and settings. I even tipped him as he did a great job in the care of running the wires inside.

While weather can be an issue we just went through a bad storm early last week that had rain and very high winds and never lost a signal although speed was down around 20-25meg based on using a simple ookla speed test. I lost Direct TV for about 20 minutes but not the Internet.

My only outage that I am aware of was when I nicked the cable with my rake on the tractor as I was a little too aggressive moving some dirt around in a hurry. The installer came back out, ran a complete new cable and this time I buried it even though he was going to do it as I not only felt bad I also wanted to go a bit deeper this go around.

So far knock on wood..... I have been happy with the service. Thanks for the comments and checking out the thread.

Thanks Shorty.... as for a percentage, I asked my wife as I was just curious for her answer and she said 95% done. I then rattled off all of the projects she had lined up for me and she said...”yeah, like I said 95%” SO , there you have it, what will be 4-5 weekends of my time is just 5% left. No wonder I never seem to be done with anything lately!

Thanks JD, thank you for the comments and checking out the thread. Once the metal shop is done the progress will pick up a little faster as I will be working on the shop spaces and less on the living space. That’s when the fun begins for me.

Thanks Ned! So you were one of the original Mustangs! Very cool. We moved here in 2005 and it’s amazing how much the area has grown. As for Livingston, we love it. When we started, I though it might just be a weekend place for us and maybe a retirement spot one day but now I am trying to figure out how I can maybe make that the permanent spot now! You will love that jointer once you get it up and running. Worst case, you have a 8ft solid workbench that will never move! [emoji14] I would highly recommend using Esta knives in it as it makes it painless to change knives. http://dispozablade.com/self-set/

The jointers in the model 60 series of that style I believe were made from around 1905 to the late ‘50’s.

Hey Cam, I am finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel and for once it doesn’t appear to be the train! I got word today that the building will be delivered on the 9th so I am hoping in four weeks I will be putting some sealer down on the floor, installing a lift ( well actually a Bendpak installer will be), and electrical done in about six weeks if the weather holds out. Soooo... if that happens there should be some sparks by June!

Yesterday, picked up the latest toy for the woodshop.... a new 7.5HP 80 gallon tank BendPak Compressor model V-Max Elite 7580V-601.



I was planning on getting another Champion but I was reading Odis thread - https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=149658 (which if you have not checked it out is great by way....) and he mentioned the great offer from member JSK for GJ members listed here:

and they were kind enough to let me participate. I couldn’t pass up a very generous deal like this but I also appreciate vendors who support the forum and I try to support them when I can. The only “catch” was that you had to give them your opinion of the compressor by posting a review. I will be posting a thorough review here, within the original deal thread as well as a video on my YouTube channel.

I don’t want to give away to much just yet but my first impressions are very positive. In fact, because of the service I received just on the compressor itself, was enough for me to pick their XPL-12CL lift for my new metal shop.

It was raining most of the weekend so we ended up trying to unpack the rest of my in-laws boxes and containers which you can see from the front porch there were many! When the rain stopped for awhile I went outside and shot some photos as well as took a few shots from inside. The furnishing are my in-laws and not exactly my taste but I hope to make them some new pieces of furniture when the workshop is up and running.

I made the photos into a quick slide show. If my wife knew I took photos of the barn during this time and posted them on the internet I think she would have a stroke... I figured you guys could live with a messy porch, bathroom, kitchen, yada yada yada....

It will definitely be a step up from 8mb. In my area, it was the same cost as crappy 5mb DSL. The pricing is a little frustrating in that I pay the same cost at my house for 100G service but it works.

Thank you! I am just trying to keep up with you! Your thread has caused me to search out some older equipment to restore after seeing what you have done on yours. I now have acquired a 15” x 30” LeBlond lathe, a 2013-2 DoAll bandsaw & GPM-200V mill all requiring some restoration.

Shorty, I did want to add another Morton building as the style and color would be more of a match than this building but it came down to price and time frame. Luckily, our neighbor next door to the barn who gave us our power easement saving us a ton of money, builds commercial metal buildings. He usually doesn’t do buildings this small but he offered to do the build, had a crew ready and gave me a great price so I couldn’t pass it up. When I build the outdoor kitchen hopefully this next year I will do another Morton building. That building will go on the other side of the barn.

Close, I just need storage space so shop will be a shop. The new 18'x25' is just a simple metal tube building. I'll park the new generator in there so I can run during the next storm, a small AC space to drink beer in during the really hot time of year.

Kickass duker, personally I prefer a red iron building over a pole but I gotta admit I've never had any experience with a pole building. Those actually boggle my mind since something like that would never be allowed out here. That thing will be up and done in nothing flat. How are you planning to insulate?

That reminds me of the time we were planning our first trip to lake Powell and I was out oooking for a three seater PWC for the teenagers to use for tubing duty so I didn't need to drive the boat all day long, but couldn't find the kind of deal I wanted. The wife says "look you've been wanting a new boat, why don't you just go that route ".


That conversation was not questioned nor was it revisited. There was a new boat in the driveway the following day.

Cam sorry for the delay, for now on the building I am going with the standard vinyl backed insulation which if I remember correctly is an R13 value. When I go to spray foam insulate the woodshop i might do the same on the metal shop if it doesn’t appear to be enough.

A little update on the metal shop...

The crew foreman who is a super nice guy ended up having to have back surgery this week so the crew moved over to other jobs while he recovered. This is the status so far but they will be back on the job this week and should be finished by this coming Friday.

Three sides have been insulated and skinned. I still need to remove the two pine trees blocking the entrances. Sorry for the bad pics it was raining off and on all weekend.

The two man doors have been framed in... There will be a wood framed partition wall between the two doors separating the machine room from the rest of the shop.

The trolley rail has been put up. It's conservatively rated for 2500 pounds which should be all I need to unload from trailers etc.

That's it for now. Hopefully, more pics this coming weekend. I hope to power wash the concrete Saturday and begin to seal the floor on Sunday.

The trolley beam was actually my neighbor/builders idea. I was going to build a gantry and he mentioned that they can be designed in and it would be one less thing in the shop to have to work around so in it went! Thanks for stopping in to check on the progress.

You can leave the trees for bumper poles to protect the doors.


Love the trolley beam, glad you have a contractor that's not afraid to pursue this. Back when I did mine in KY, they acted like it was a big deal.
