Looking at one of your other posts, the building is completed and you’re staging equipment?

Hey Shorty sorry for the late reply I didn’t see the post. I used to get a notification but all those have stopped for some reason.

In regards to your question, yes I have begun to move some items into the metal shop. I am holding off on moving tools into the woodshop as I am going to have it insulated, framed and then the pine v groove paneling installed. Keeping It empty will make moving the scaffolding needed to install the framing and paneling easier. I was going to do it myself over time but I have reached my limit of working ON the shop and would like to accelerate the working IN the shop.

That's great news the tools are starting to move in duker. How about the pics here so we got something to lust after bud ;)

Ya know I haven't made up my mind yet if when reaching an age you no longer have the desire to do everything yourself is a godsend or not. What I do know is guys like us who sweat every detail most if not all of their adult life have the ability to sit back and actually let another complete those tasks without stepping in at some point. Sooooo good luck on the wood shop my brother

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I finally figured out what my father meant when he said you reach an age where you stop doing certain things.... as he said...his was “work below his waist!”

After cleaning and sealing the Metal shop floors and installing, sanding and sealing the Woodshop floors I think I am close to that age!

Joking aside, I have been going back and forth about finishing the shop myself or letting someone else get the work done which would allow me the opportunity to enjoy working on projects in the shop sooner. As I watch guys like Mike (Zmotorsports) use and enjoy his shop it made me sit down and evaluate which course of action I should take. After, running through the pros and cons (with the primary cons being money and level of quality of someone else doing the work) I figured if I could find a contractor I could trust I would farm the work out and get it done.

Fortunately, I found a framer who is more **** than I am and I already had a contractor who did great work installing my v-groove ceiling. If it wasn’t for these guys and my comfort level with them the decision would be much harder just for the reasons you state.

Now as for pictures, I have a bunch to upload but I need to finish installing my new SSD drive in my home computer which is how I get them off of my camera. Hopefully by this weekend I will have a batch ready to post.

Boy ain't that the truth.

I thought I had reached that point but the past year and a half has proven me wrong. Now I am wondering if I will ever reach the point where I can sit back and let someone else complete those tasks without stepping in and doing it the way I want it done.:headscrat

On one hand I wish I could be more like some of my co-workers and friends and just accept whatever is done but on the other I don't think I can ever just settle for something not being done correctly. Things to ponder in life I guess.

I'm the same, prefer to do it myself where possible. Takes longer but I get to see the reward for the work.

Looking forward to the updated pics.

With two shops to finish and set up, I think you’re on the right track getting a contractor. To many of us are still trying to finish our shops and I’m the president of that club. I applaud Mike for sticking to his plan of nothing in the shop until 100% complete.

Enjoying a rainy 4th of July so I thought take a break from some shop projects and post a little update.

The past few weeks have been if I can choose a word... "interesting." Not to bore the list too much with my personal life but I have gone through a bit of attitude adjustment when it comes to my priorities. A few weeks back my wife went into surgery to remove what the biopsy test suggested was a cancerous tumor. She went through the experience like a champ, i on the other hand became a bit of a basket case. Skipping the details, she is going to be fine as the full pathology ruled out cancer. Two weeks after that my son went into renal failure. He is now on the national donor registry awaiting a kidney but my wife who is a match might be eligible for a live donor transplant and is going through the testing process as I have been ruled out. The woman is amazing and my son is taking it all in stride. My nerves on the other hand are shot!

So, with that little distraction aside, here are a few photos of what has been happening at the Barn.

Waxed the floor to add a little sheen and give a little glue spill protection.

Had a crew come in a frame out the walls of the woodshop getting it ready for spray foam insulation and then the T&G siding.

I began the process of moving the electrical boxes from the walls and attaching them to the studs.

Began to move some stuff into the metal shop....

View media item 84590
I needed to bring in the "big lift" to move some of my tools into the shop.

Got one storage unit almost cleaned out... two more to go....

View media item 84579
I poured a little pad for my new American Rotary 40HP phase converter

I have a lot of projects in the started phase but no photos so that's it for now... going to the metal shop to put up some temporary shelving to get the boxes off of the floor until I can move in the cabinets.

I hope everyone has a great 4th.

Duke, glad to see the progress on your place and it's nice to see metal working tools/equipment being moved in.

I am sorry to hear of your recent concerns with your wife and son. I can see where that would be very stressful and all consuming. I hope all goes well with your son's transplant.

You and your family will be in my prayers my friend. If I can do anything please don't hesitate to reach out.

Oh gezzis, my heart goes out to you and we'll keep your family in our prayers. I can't imagine what you're going thru but I certainly understand it. Keep the faith bud and know many of us here will be rooting for his and your wife's return to good health.

Your wood shop is absolutely stunning bud, I can't wait to see it 100%. When do you think you'll have the metal shop up and running?

Duke, my prayers are for your wife and son. My sympathy is for you. I've been on both sides of health crises and I've found dealing with my own problem is much easier than dealing with my wife or children being in harms way. I have no words for your two shops.

First. Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes for my wife and son they are very much appreciated.

Cam, I had to post pone my electrical guys as my framing guys got pushed back due to my schedule then weather on their other jobs so I am now hoping by August. I had the framers build a wall in the metal shop to separate the machine room from the welding area.

Bob, you are so right in that your family is much tougher to deal with when they are sick or suffering. Mentally it hit me pretty hard .

Oh man. That’s not good news. I’m glad that the Mrs. is out of harms way and hope the future is better for your son.

Thanks for the shop pictures. It’s got to be catch 22, great distraction but not the most important thing.

Thanks Shorty it is amazing what goes through your head when you start thinking about cancer and what it could mean to your spouse. As for my son hopefully my wife can be a live donor. We will know more in a few weeks

As for the shop, yes it is a bit of a catch 22 but fortunately it was one of the few things that would bring me back to thinking positively about the future during all of this.

Duker I’m curious how spray foam will work since your studs are off from your wall 4”?

Are you spraying the whole thing, making this a non issue?

John, thank you for the kind words, I appreciate the thoughts and prayers. It’s hard not to worry about your family but my son told me if I ask him how he is feeling one more time he is going to punch me in the gut so he can ask me how I am feeling. I think you are right...he is going to be fine.

Big Al, thanks for checking out the thread. The spray foam will be +/- 4” deep across the whole wall between the major posts. I had a vapor barrier installed when the barn was built in preparation for the foam. It should expand into the back of the studs. They calculated that estimated R value should be between R-24 to R-26 with closed cell foam.

Duker, hope all will be well for your son and wife, and you too.

Thank you Craig.

Shane, thank you comments. We got some good news yesterday that my wife passed the second round of blood screening to be a donor so hopefully she will pass the next few rounds of testing as well!

Duker,

Just read through the 352 posts, I am in awe of your build(s). Here I just thought you post AW deals and built an awesome welding cart.

My heart sank when I read about yr wife and son, I do hope that everything will be ok with your son, I can't imagine anything like that.

I like the floor you put down, looks like it came out really nice.

John, you must be a glutton for punishment to wade through all of those pages! Thanks for checking out the thread. Searching for AWD’s have helped me be a “little less over” my budget in building out the metal and wood shop!

I will pass on some good news I just got from my better half.... she had already passed the blood test and tissue tests and her preliminary results on her kidney function are good so that means both her kidneys are full functioning. If the full workup confirms the preliminary report then she is good to go as a donor for our son!
