Re: Duker’s Barndominium

So sorry haven’t been around but I’m really glad to hear everyone is doing well after surgery.

Thanks Gerard!

Great news bud!!

Thank you Cam!

Hi Duker , I just finished reading the whole thread. Love the shops.

Regarding the family health situation, don’t be afraid to reach out to other family and friends for some relief. Your wife and son I’m sure would take some comfort in knowing that you’re taking care of yourself too (physically, mentally and otherwise). No need to run yourself ragged.

Andy, thank you checking out the thread and the comments. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can get back to posting about the shops!

Prayers for you guys Duker!

Thank you Terry!

Great update. Hopefully the rooms are close together. Thanks for taking time to let us know how things went.

Appreciate it Shorty, the rooms are on the same floor but on opposite sides of the building as my son is in ICU while they monitor the kidney. My doctor should be happy with all the cardio workouts I am getting walking back and forth!

Thank you for the update. Please take care of yourself because the stress you are under can put you in an adjoining room. From my experience those ice chips are a real blessing.

Thank you Bob, it has taken a toll but fortunately we are very fortunate in that friends and family have stepped up whenever we needed something.

Thanks for the update Duke, sounds like good news.

Prayers continued for you and your family my friend.

Thanks Mike we really do appreciate all the support.

What zmotorsports says :)

Thanks John!

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery for both your wife and son!

Thank you Don!

My wife is expected to come home today and my son hopefully Sunday if he continues to improve at the rate he has so far. I just want to say thank you again to all of you who followed along and passed on your thoughts and prayers. I read many to my wife and at first she was mortified as she thought I was sharing pics of her in her hospital gown but she was amazed at the sentiment and I think she gained a new perspective on why I like to be a part of this forum.

That is terrific news Duker.

Happy to hear that.

Duke,

SO glad to here things are looking up for you and your family!

As many have said, take care of yourself too!

Awesome!! So happy for team Duker!

Fantastic Reboot of family life.

D

Great news! Now don't forget to take care of yourself.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. I brought my wife home last night and put her to bed, read for a few minutes then crashed. I slept until almost 7:00 this morning which is something I haven’t done in 20+ years so I guess I was more tired than I thought!

My son is now scheduled to be released Monday as they want to go through some more training on meds, incision care etc..

While it has been tiring and a whirlwind of activity the results so far have been more than we could have imagined.

Glad to hear your wife and son are getting better!

Eric

Thanks guys!

I left the hospital this morning after my son said he was feeling better and said that I needed to take a break. He suggested I head to the shop and work on a project so I took his advice and headed out to the barn to play in the metal shop for a little while.

I needed to make a base for my new compressor so I took a piece of steel, tossed it onto the saw and cut all the pieces to length. I then mitered the ends on the dry cut saw. That took me about 30 minutes as I was taking my time but in my old shop it would have taken me two hours as I would have had to move equipment around just to be able to position for each cut. I have to say I felt very spoiled! That feeling quickly went away however, as I tried to lay a couple of beads. It felt like I had never welded. Now I would love to blame the fact that I was running my welder off a 100ft 10Ga extension cord but the fact is I am just plain rusty.

Anyway, I got it welded up and even though the welds look like Stevie Wonder did them it was nice to actually make something in the shop.

So behold....here is the first official (albeit) unfinished project of the new metal shop.

My time in the shop was cut short when my wife called me to tell me the hospital called saying they were moving my son back into ICU as he was getting fluid in his lungs. So, I locked up the shop, headed back home to clean up and am now back at the hospital. He is doing better but I will spend the night again just to keep an eye on him.

Once again I follow LXCam's thoughts.

Yeah, poor kid is really tired as he hasn’t had much sleep. The fluid in the lungs they think was that he had some fluid in his body from his old kidneys not functioning and also too much IV intake as they wanted to be sure the kidney stayed hydrated. He is doing better today and is currently sleeping. Unfortunately, he got nauseous last night and couldn’t keep any food down so he will stay in ICU one more day and it oooks like maybe Tuesday for release.

Neither of us has gotten much sleep but I have been able to catch up on some GJ threads. I will camp out here again tonight and my mom has come over to help look after my wife.

It’s a small setback in the big picture so we will just roll with punches!

I was over checking out Bob, the one armed wonder's thread, when I saw your post, so I had to come over here and see what the deal was. Nothing worse than your kids being sick.
Prayers that things progress smoothly, and your family is home together soon, all of them happy and healthy.

Glad your son was still in ICU when they caught the fluid build up and can treat it. Best wishes all around.

I appreciate the comments and support guys. I wish had some good news to tell you this morning.

Yesterday my son's blood pressure spiked and he was suffering some really bad nausea. The took him to have a renal scan to see if there were any blockages or other issues. During the procedure they found a blockage limiting blood flow so they took him for emergency surgery to remove the blockage. While doing the surgery they found that the kidney was full of blood clots and they were forced to remove the new kidney.

My wife and I were devastated, I felt like I had been gut punched. I went from feeling optimistic to shock to angry and then numb. All of the pain my wife and son went through.... all for nothing. The worst part of it all was my son went into surgery thinking they take out any blockage and he would be fine. We had to break the news to him that they had to remove the kidney.

So, in my frustration and anger of the moment I am expecting my son to just fall apart at the news but he surprised me once again as he has done his whole life. While he was disappointed, he looked at my wife and I and said we will just have to try again. I about lost it at that point and I can say without a doubt that is one of the proudest moments of my life.

At this point I would love to tell you what is going to happen next but we just don't know yet. They are going to run a battery of tests to try and figure out the cause and source of the clotting.

Thank you all once again for the comments. It has been a roller coaster ride but the support has been very much appreciated as this is has been a sort of therapy for me and it has helped to see the encouragement.

Duker, my heart aches for you. You have every right to be angry and heartbroken so if it helps, vent to us as a group or feel free to vent privately to me or someone else on the GJ (your closest family and friends may not like seeing you angry). You know better than any of us that there are two people who need you to be strong. Bottled up emotions can **** the life out of you so feel free to punch us in the collective gut. Also let your wife and son know how proud you are of them and do it until they complain.

Following along here and my jaw dropped with your latest news. Your son is one tough cookie both physically and mentally. What an attitude to have. All we hear is the negative about youth these days, but your son and others I know do not fit that profile.

Keep your chin up, we're pulling for you...

Duker,

So sorry to read this news. I've experienced something like this in that my sister required a kidney transplant when she was a young adult and the first kidney was rejected. After a period of healing she was talked into giving it another chance and so far... knock on the keyboard, more than 30 years later she and her donor kidney are healthy.

Best wishes for a successful 2nd transplant!

Bob, thank you for the wise words. I intend to take my frustration out this weekend banging some metal into shape and doing some mowing on the tractor! I have found that to be the best therapy for me.

Thank you Shane.

Again, I can’t say it enough but thank you to everyone for the kind words. My son at his age has displayed grace and poise that I am still trying to achieve. I think that is what I have taken away from this whole experience.

So, my son came home last night and we are all heading to the barn tomorrow for the weekend to relax. I am emotionally drained so this will end this chapter until we start the process all over again.

Hopefully the next post will be about some progress on the barn or metal shop or heaven forbid.... a completed project!

Every project has some setbacks and this one is sure heartbreaking. I am sure your strength and faith will pull you through this difficult time. As we pray for you and your family maybe you and your son can get in some shop time together. Shop beats ICU every time.

I appreciate the comments Jim. And you are spot on... shop time beats ICU every time! We have some “light duty” projects planned that will be fun to build.

Duke, so sorry to hear of the setback with your son.

I have been on vacation and one of the first tasks of the morning was to check on your family's health. I felt the gut punch myself and ache for ya bud.

Just remember you have friends here pulling for your family with thoughts and prayers.
