On you sloping sidewalk at the gate, I was reading Architectural Digest last month and there was an article showing where the unaligned gate/walk was a new style. Because of that, I decided on the same look. 9d8328c7ff311b6fd0071ec9125cc679.jpg

Little off topic post tonight as I flew to NY to attend a conference and it is a strange feeling being here on 9-11. I had a friend who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald who died in the tower and went to go look for his name on the wall. There was quite a crowd.

From there I went over to Goldman Sach’s offices and snapped a pic of the Freedom tower. I should have waited until it was lit up but it was nice to see the city view.

09084f3bf92c415d081aae7d1a901f6d.jpg

I hope we never forget what happened that day. I raise a glass in toast to Bill and to all who lost friends and family and Co-workers that day.
.

We may not always agree in this country about politics or being red or blue but that day we all were Americans and we all came together to support each other. I hope everyone has a great evening.

Sorry for the sappy post I am on my #nth drink....

Hey Duke,

just checking in. I know you were getting one place ready to sell. Just hoping none of that rain hitting Texas last week hit any of your places.

Thank you, it was a humbling experience being up there.

Did you check out the 9-11 museum while you were there? I hear it's quite impressive.

Unfortunately I did not have time but I will be back up there in the first quarter of next year and plan to check it out. Thanks for stopping In.

John, thanks for checking in. We were good on the rain and flooding but we had some neighbors and friends who had some flooding so I spent last weekend pulling up carpet and wood floors some that had just been replaced since Hurricane Harvey. Another reason we want to sell our house as it may just keep getting worse with the overbuilding.

Thank you for sharing this on such an important day.

Finally getting a chance to do a little update on the Barn...

I will post more pictures tomorrow of some of the projects as they are still loading up into the “cloud” wherever the heck that is but here is one “in progress” pic...that has load... we have been building a dock

17a11129b71314a43ad17663c54052eb.jpg

I have finished adding power to the metal shop and competed the wiring for the rotary phase converter in the wood shop. To celebrate being able to just flick a switch to turn lights on versus plugging in a cord I splurged on a new mig gun for a welder I picked up at an auction a while back...

What is this.... I let some Blue into the shop??

More pics to follow tomorrow....

I can't believe it is already December and the year is almost over. You never believe as a kid that time flies by but I feel like I blink and another year is gone.

I had quite a few projects to get done on the barn this year but I was only able to knock a few off the list. That said, one did get done that I promised my wife and that was the dock. However, in full disclosure I cheated and brought in a crew to finish it up. Those of you who are married or have a significant other.... You know the drill, "if Momma ain't happy no one is happy" so with that, I present one completed dock....

View media item 98878
With that one out of the way I could get to other smaller projects like getting the logo for the Ranch done so that I could have some T-Shirts and hats made up. Something I wanted to have done months ago...

So here is the new logo... still a work in progress in my mind but the first batch of hats and t-shirts will be here just before Christmas.

View media item 98881
The hats have the circle logo and that is what will be in the center of the gate when it done (another project in partial completion.)

Speaking of gate and projects that brings me to my latest auction find/toy...

I wasn't really looking for a new welder but a few months back there was an auction where they had about 40 of these Miller XMT 350 CC/CV up for sale and as I watched the prices keep dropping as they were selling them off I couldn't resist and I bought one. A few weeks after that I spotted the wire feeder for sale on Craigslist made a low ball offer since I really didn't need one right away and he said done. So I bought a new torch and set it up to run .045 flux since I have my Powermig 255 set up for .035 with gas. This weekend it will be seeing some action building the next phase of my steel storage rack.

hey Duker,

nice looking dock, looks like they did a nice job. What are you going to dock there? Is it wide enough for some chairs?

I like your logo. nice job. I take a 2xl tall. I prefer dark colors.

Nice looking welder as well.

and does this mean there will be a title change to this thread or a new thread being started?

Welder poor. Good job.

Dock looks like a nice place to relax with the boss and breezy day. Our wives must be long lost sisters.

Nice job on the logo. I’d do one but the letters would be so short no one could read it.

Thanks John. The dock doesn’t look it in the pictures but it’s actually 10’ x 24’ not including the boat/ski launch on the side. We don’t have a boat yet but my wife would like to get some jet skis this next year then a pontoon boat down the road. Tonight we sat on the dock had a drink and watched some fishing boats troll on by....

As for the thread, I am goin to keep this one primarily about the changes we do to the ranch and use my projects thread to show what I actually make in the shop. I am making a gate for the ranch with the progress so far being buying and cutting some tube. I am waiting for my Plasma table to get here hopefully in January to cut out the logo.

Man, that's a nice XMT. Can't wait to see what you build with it!

Thanks! It’s my first experience with a Miller so going to see how it compares.

Shorty, we sat out tonight in some perfect weather enjoying a drink. I think it will be a nice addition to the ranch and a great spot for guests to enjoy some fishing and a cocktail!

Yes, I'm delinquent with one 'custom barn door' at this time, for about 4 years now.

Anyhow, Port Rocky Creek Ranch looks nice.

Thanks Justin... I like that name....Port Rocky. It’s better than the Rocky Dock which is what I was thinking! I might have to make a sign to hang on the dock!

The dock looks like a tranquil place. I used to dream of having property with a creek running through it. Wanted to build my own covered bridge.

Thanks John. A covered bridge would be cool to build. I have a seasonal Creek that would be a great spot for one but it would be way way down on the project list!

Nice welders.

How do you like the Precision Tig?

Craig, I like it but then again it’s the only Tig machine I have ever used. It has more capability than what I will ever use it for in my welding.

Looking good D. But at the rate you keep collecting new tools you’re gonna need another building.

Keep up the collecting, I’m looking forwards to your next thread...The Rocky Crick Industrial Center :)

The next phase of the woodshop in the barn is completed.... Spray foam insulation is done! I spent a few days trying to get the last of the wiring done, speakers, internet, and some extra three phase plugs for any future acquisitions down the road.

View media item 99333
View media item 99332
I also built two mini jibs for a pulley system to mount to the columns up high that will be for my airborne dust collectors.

View media item 99331
These will mount next to the two switched plugs high up on the posts. I will use a couple of electric winches to raise and lower to change filters.

View media item 99330
I hope to mount them this week when the crew comes in to install the T&G siding. I will borrow their scaffolding when it gets set up to finish the install.

Hey Duker, that is looking really nice.

Did i Miss how the ceiling was done?

Are you going to leave the floor the way it is?

What is under the wood on the floor?

I don't think you have enough outlets or switches on that wall..

It appears from the pictures that there are a few cavities where the insulation isn't tight against the stud(s).

What is r the value?

Good thinking on the jibs.

What a beautiful floor. Glad to see the wood shop get some love. That insulation is going to be nice especially in the summer when we stop in for the barn shindig.

Hey John thanks, the woodshop it is finally coming together.

The ceiling insulation was blown in with an approximate R30 value. The walls are a little deceiving as their was about 3” to the .5” insulfoam on the walls before your reached the backside of the studs which are not really structural but just to hold the T&G. We estimated the R value for the walls should be close to 19 with the insulfoam at about 5 and 3-3.5” of spray foam with an R value of about 5 per inch.

The wood floors have been sealed and have just wax on them. They need to be swept and buffed out a little to bring some sheen back.

As far as outlets go.... it’s like clamps you can never have too many! That might be why I have two 200 panels and a 100 amp panel for the rotary converter. If the GJ has taught me anything it’s that Overkill is the bare minimum!

Thanks again for stopping in!

Thanks Shorty, the woodshop was feeling a little neglected and it was time to get moving as I have a commission I need to start working on in January so it was time to get rolling.

There will be a shindig in 2020, maybe it will be the Florida GJ Chapter third coast summer meeting!

Do I remember you saying you take on students. If so when are going to start again and how long and how much are the courses?

PM me if it's not something you are willing to discuss here.

Everything looks great BTW

Thanks Glen, I do teach and I will be starting some classes again when the woodshop is complete and setup. I will PM you later as I don’t want to run afoul of any GJ rules....

Absolutely..... We will cover all aspects of fluid dynamics.

First course is the differentiations between German, Belgium, Mexican and domestic distillation process.

We will proceed next to advanced aerobic effects from the arc dynamics of constant motion of twelve and sixteen ounce curls followed by advanced palate inebriation from the fermentation and chemical reactions of charcoal enriched containers.

The final course is the aerodynamics of combustible cylindrical Objects while maintaining a stable Vertical reference point

Due to the complexity of these classes it usually takes two to three sessions before one feels mastery of the subject matter.

It has been a long day and I didn’t stop to take pics yet of my metal shop progress but the crew working on the T&G in the woodshop went to town and have about one day left to finish up.
