Wow a lot going on in this garage! Lots of cool projects! I really liked how you set up all the casters on your machines, I got a 1906 metal brake i need to get caster on, too heavy to slide around, I will be copyright infringing on some of your caster ideas

Thanks! Yeah the 6" was tortured but survived.

A few months back I snagged the vises, a 20 gallon Rubbermaid bin of forged C-Clamps and the real prize a South Bend 10k lathe with collet closer , all the collets, four chucks and a bunch of additional tooling. The lathe is in great shape except for covered in dirt and grime. I am hoping to make that my summer restoration project.

I was at my neighbor's place the other night, he's the retired lead-hand of the machine-shop that supported the local University's Physics department, and he has an amazing little mill and lathe from a Swiss company called Schaublin. I can't wait to have a lathe and mill. It really opens the doors to the things you can do, and my manager always chats my ear off if I go into work on a day off to use a machine.

I was at my neighbor's place the other night, he's the retired lead-hand of the machine-shop that supported the local University's Physics department, and he has an amazing little mill and lathe from a Swiss company called Schaublin. Lol .... Well, you can come down here and use mine anytime! I will need someone to show me how to use them. My mill (PM-935 TV) is supposed to be here around the end of March so I am trying to clear some floor space so that I can actually use it when it gets here. My first job will be to try and figure out how to mill some carbide tipped wood lathe tool inserts for a large turning project I have using Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) which is a very dense wood. Whenever I turn this stuff I spend half my time at the grinder it seems so I am hoping the carbide turning tools will eliminate some of that.

BTW, those Schaublin tools look amazing. You need to snag those somehow!

Thanks, I am guessing your talking about the one on my welding table versus the SWAG bandsaw stand? Both have been huge timesavers. The dry cut saw set up has been a huge help especially when I am handling longer stock.

You can infringe on anything you see as long as you abide by GJ rules and post pictures of what you build!

Lol .... Well, you can come down here and use mine anytime! I will need someone to show me how to use them. That's a nice home-mill! Should be pretty capable. I wish I could snag those machines, but he just got them and hooked them up. He was so proud when he was showing them to me, it was great! Showed me the things he planned on fixing, a couple things he had made, the cooler features and stuff. They're tiny machines, but they run on 3-phase 550v! So he has a phase-converter and a transformer just to run them!

How's work coming along on that bar? I need a drink if I'm going to drive 2400 miles to help you figure out that mill!

Sorry if you may have mentioned this and I missed it but do you have a lathe already? If so what do you have?

I really like my knee mill compared to my combo lathe/mill that I had previously. It seems as though for even a small task or project having the units separate are much more "user friendly" compared to having to break the toolpost down on the combo unit from lathe status, where I usually had it set up, to be able to use the mill head feature.

However, after seeing your lathe I am pondering wether I should sell it and buy the PM lathe. Mike, I do have a metal lathe its a SB 10K that I got at an estate sale a few months back. It needs to have some minor restoration done before being operable. Thanks Duke, I do enjoy my new lathe. It is nice and smooth. I looked for nearly a year for used equipment by I appear to live in a machinery desert. The very few pieces of equipment I did find were either HUGE and way beyond my work envelope or they were of the correct size I was looking for but worn out. I too didn't want a restoration project, I wanted a lathe and mill to make chips with right away doing other projects in my shop.

There are many that like restoring machinery and that is great but not me, I have too many other things to do.

Great work, I've recently stumbled on a similar style Equipto cabinet and have contemplated building a frame and enclosing all sides and adding doors to the upper half as well.

I was originally going to enclose the bottom half of the cabinets thinking it would keep hardware etc from bouncing around out of the drawer and onto the floor etc.. However, that was never an issue while I had them set up the old way in warehouse fashion so I decided to leave the backs and sides open. The frames are pretty stout with 2"x3" x 11 gauge tubing so there has been no flex or deflection in the drawers or cabinets. Since these back up to a wall or other cabinet you never see the back. I will cap off the ends where they can be seen to clean up the look but it's more for my OCD than for rigidity. For me, making the panels is a lot of labor for not much utility especially for nine cabinets. It is also easier to be able to reach in from the back to "adjust" the glide plates on my cabinets if you need to remove or reorganize drawer configurations.

The upper cabinets have a wood cabinet inserted so the sides and back are already clean looking based on how they are constructed and slide in.

If your going to see the the sides or your cabinet I say go for it and enclose them in Just be sure to post pics!

Where has the summer gone… Unfortunately not a lot of new projects in the garage so far this summer but I have at least acquired some new toys.

My birthday present showed up awhile back and it came in the shape of a new mill.

Spent the next few weeks trying to squeeze in time to build a mobile base and get it set up.

Mike aka Zmotorsports hooked me up with a power draw bar and it has been awesome!

My previous Kurt 5” vise find and restoration now has a new home.

The next addition which I am still working on is this 4-Door 28-Drawer storage cabinet.

I had a friend from work tell me his neighbor bid on this cabinet at a local auction but then found out he had to move for work. He said if I was interested in the cabinet and could go pick it up his neighbor would make me a deal as he didn’t want to pack it for the move. I said I would go pick it up and if decent, I would take the cabinet.

I am not sure what he paid for it but for $500 bucks and the cost of trailer rental its now mine. The cabinet is heavy gauge steel and has all ball bearing slides. It was faded being out in the Texas sun but I have repainted the drawers and will work on the cabinet doors next. Other than paint it had a door pull that was mangled but I will have a fix for that…. I need to put all those HF tool chest handles from my workbench build somewhere!

In between the toys I had to work on some of my better half's project which included this "Banquette" bench. I am not really sure what the difference is between a regular bench and a Banquette bench but she showed me a picture and so I made the bench.

I wanted to make hinged lids but due to the limited depth to get the maximum storage I used drop in lids with recessed pulls.

I will be making a trestle table to go with the bench for her "coffee with the girls corner".... her name not mine....

The next thing to land at the garage was this…. “Pepe – my little mule” (a hint for those who might have seen what movie…..?) and a new trailer so that I don't have rent one anymore.

While Pepe is good fun.... the BIG news for me is that my significant other has finally said its time to buy some property and I have the go ahead to build my new shop once we locate the land.

So that's about all the news and projects I have for now.... Hopefully some shop news coming soon!

Secondly, the bench turned out quite nice, third Pepe will be fun for you and the family to play on the land. Which congratulations on by the way, I'm really happy you will be getting to build your shop finely that will be a whole new adventure to get set up and ready to rock. Perhaps you'll decided to build the fridge into the corner of the new bench and actuate it so it'll raise and lower with the push of a button.

Thanks! Depending on what I need I either go to Triple S on Jensen or another steel place whose name I can't recall at the moment right next then off of 59 North. They may not be the cheapest but they are the closest to me.

I usually pick from the scrap pile first at Triple S if I can as those guys in the yard will give me a good deal and they have a pretty good selection of most everything I might need.

I fully deserve the hard time and one day I will be the benefactor of a large lathe from Matt.

What makes it worse is that I have a Southbend 10k project lathe in storage so I don't have any excuses!

However, that said, it won't be until I can build a new shop as I have no more room in my existing shop. It truly has become standing room only.

We did! We closed last Friday. We bought 18 acres that has a river running on the back of the property. The river is navigable by boat and heads out to Lake Livingston so we get the benefit of the lake but the quiet of the river. Supposedly some of the best fishing in the state back up the river.

I am meeting with the Utility company on Monday to determine where to set service. As soon as I can load up a picture or two I will.

I have been working on plans for the new "Barndominium" building which as of right now will be roughly 40% weekend house and 60% shop. I will also have a separate 30' x 30' storage building for the horse ( 4 leg kind), mule ( 4 wheel kind), tractor and assorted other stuff.

I am undecided if I should throw it under this thread or create a new one. I think I may have littered the GJ with enough threads already.

8man, thank you for the comments and for checking out the threads. I am excited to get the land as it happened sooner than I thought and now I feel like I am behind in getting plans done!

In regards to the kids, while we would love to admit and take credit for being wonderful parents it was fate that brought them into our lives. I will be honest, if someone had said upfront here is what lies in front of you I might have said no thanks I will take the next train. However, had I done so I would have missed the best times of my life. My wife and I have become somewhat champions of adoption and especially adoption of special needs kids. I have to watch myself as I am kind of like a smoker who quits smoking and becomes a zealot whenever he finds someone who smokes. With that I will get off of my soap box.

Thank you! I will try and document from start to finish the process of building the shop. In reading through some other workshop threads, I have found some interesting tidbits that have saved me some time and given me some great ideas so hopefully the various steps might be beneficial to someone else. If all goes well, I hope to go completely overboard!
