Dukers Garage Projects

Not much to post project wise as I have about 20 different projects going all about 20% completed... so, basically just like normal....
I did get a couple of new toys for the metal shop. I got a Safety Kleen parts washer in great shape (no pics yet) and a Famco Arbor press. I have been looking for a long throw press for awhile as I do a lot of woodworking equipment refurb and there have been more times than I can remember where I needed a taller reach to remove a shaft or bearing.
I cleaned off the grime and will try to blast and paint later on this year.
I also had an interesting encounter with a stray dog.... or what I really should say he had an interesting with one of my dogs....
We have three dogs we bring up to the barn every weekend, my daughters Service dog Cooper, my wife’s mini dachshund Riley and our latest acquisition “Tank.” Tank (who was named by my wife as I wanted to go with “Chunk”) was found by my daughter when she and a friend were walking on the greenbelt in our neighborhood and saw a car drop him off and then sped away. After a day in our house we knew why they dropped him off as he is still a puppy and chewed up about 6 pairs of shoes and a few chair legs! He is a Pit bull with a Boxer colored coat so we were nervous about him being around our dogs and our neighbors but Tank loves people and for some unknown reason he loves me...
Our dogs are spoiled as Cooper who lives to fetch also loves to sit in the front seat of my truck relegating my wife to the backseat.
Tank idolizes Cooper and wants to do every thing he does and is very unhappy having to sit in the back...
And as you can see Tank is totally stressed about having to live with our family...
So... fast forward to this weekend.... I was working on my three point hitch on the tractor doing some maintenance and wasn’t paying attention to anything around me. All of of a sudden I see out of the corner of my eye a brown flash shoot by and then all hell break loose behind me. I turn around and there is Tank with a death grip on a dog that appeared to be sneaking up on me. He may have just wanted some food or attention but Tank wasn’t having any of it. I got Tank to let go which was a story all in itself but when he released his grip the other dog took off and I doubt we will see him again. Tank became his amiable self again after the dog took off but it was an eye opening experience of what these dogs can do....
Of course I had to spoil Tank with some treats and Tank has now officially become my dog as we agreed to take care of each other!

I get so pissed off when I hear about low life people dumping dogs in the middle of nowhere. Just take them to a shelter people! I would love to dump those same people out in the middle of the desert here and flip them off as I drive away.

Thanks guys, Tank has become my buddy.... as I type this laying in bed (what can I say I am getting old and I am up at 4:30!) he is has worked himself next to me burrowing into the covers...
Dogs aside I forgot to mention the little bit of drama I had while picking up some items from an auction last week.... it has been a strange week...
I had bid on and won an auction for a Powermatic 1150 drill press and a 20” SCMI bandsaw from a school south of Houston. Usually you have to bring your own loading equipment but these guys operate a forklift and load you right up so pickup is usually a breeze.
I hand the driver my invoice and he runs back into the warehouse and picks up the items and is heading toward the big scissors jack they use to lower the forklift from the dock to the ground. In the meantime I am walking toward my truck and as I walk around my trailer I notice the lift is about a foot lower than the warehouse floor. I start waving my hands and yelling to hold up but it was too late....
As soon as the wheels drop forward the pallet tipped over crushing what was a couple of pieces of equipment that 30 seconds before were in great shape...
I felt sick to my stomach watching these fall off the scissors lift.....
They picked them back up them back up with the forklift and called the auction company for me and refunded my money but it was sad a couple of good pieces got so banged up.
Like I said... an interesting albeit strange week....

The best part of my weekend was today as I was off of work and I picked up my birthday present to myself that was waiting at the freight terminal....
A new HE&M 260 BSA dual miter saw. I have been agonizing for a few months about the type of saw I wanted. My first choice was a used FMB but it sold before I could make up my mind. After researching what seemed like forever, the final two candidates were this saw and the Hyd-Mech DM 10. After seeing both saws in person I went with the HEM. Nothing wrong with the Hyd-Mech but I just liked the pivot mechanism and a few other features on this saw better for the way I work.
I think you made the right decision in choosing the HE&M over the HYD-MECH. I've worked in the band saw blade industry at both the manufacturing and distribution levels for a combined total of 38 years. As such, I have a considerable amount of hands-on experience when it comes to the good, the bad, and the ugly, of band saw machine design and operation. For metalworking applications, the HE&M and BEHRINGER product lines are at the top of the heap. They're typically built to a higher standard of quality than the competition. I'd rank HYD-MECH at the lower middle of the pack.

My son finished the base for his forge. It is a little tall but it makes seeing into the forge a breeze.
My son and I will have to go and take some classes to learn how to use this thing!

It looks great! I’ve been trying to the green light to make my own forge here. I have a community college down the road that has a forge class. I’m really thinking of taking it. Seems like something that would be a lot of fun!

It was fun project to watch my son build and he has put the itch in me to learn how to use it. We have found a place up near Nacogdoches which is about an hour away from the barn that does weekend classes so we are going to try and schedule one in June.

Now that my son has become a “Welding Master” (at least in his mind ) he started another project making a dog washing station for his mom and grandmother for Mother’s Day. With our three dogs and my in-laws three dogs it’s like a kennel here on the weekend! They only come in at night which means it’s an evening ritual of hosing them ( the dogs not the in-laws! ) down.
He welded up the base and cut the washtub and will be working on the sprayer storage and tie downs etc.
His mom and grandmother have seen the sneak peak and love it.
Damn him....now I will be in the doghouse as I don’t have anything yet for gifts and nothing that will compete with that!

Now that I have moved my workbenches into the metal shop I can finally start putting away some tools. I pulled out the USA made Craftsman wrenches that Sears closed out a few years ago and started to stick them into drawers which now leaves me with some tool roll pouches I have no use for anymore.
As thank you for those who have suffered through my diatribes in this thread they are yours to the first person who wants them and sends me a PM with your address.

We have a dropped off dog here at the party garage and she has turned into the most loved dog by all who visit.
She was about 3 months old when we saw her walking down the path. She looked like she hadn't eaten in a week. She jumped into my truck and immediately became my dog (She was the dog from hell) she destroyed everything in sight for about 2 years. We lived through it and love her dearly
She is very protective of her home which is nice.
Watching a son grow up and become skilled is very rewarding for a good dad congratulations

Don, Tank is a handful but he is a great dog. As for my son, it has been great to have him in the shop and to see him progress.
Losing the tools was the start of a bad couple of weeks. This weekend we had a tree fall on our house. Fortunately the damage was not too bad....
Then I cracked a molar when a tree limb snapped while cutting the limbs to clear the trunk for the tree crew, (a reminder that no good deed ever goes unpunished!) so this morning I head to the dentist, and then to top it all off.... yesterday I find that someone tried to steal my truck, ripping out my ignition....
While I would normally be pretty ticked your post reminded me to go check on the progress of your Corvette and I am blown away. The car is gorgeous and I am excited that it is done and that you get to enjoy it with your better half.
Just what I needed to get a little attitude adjustment!

Lol... I am glad it was just tooth and not teeth as I already have a face for radio...!
I am careful about my insurance... as I tell my wife... it’s an insurance plan not an “incentive plan!” I want to be worth more alive! As for the attitude, it has taken me a long time to learn not to sweat the little stuff.... after a cancer scare with my wife and what my son and daughter have gone through as long as everyone is safe it’s all good.

Yeah, I was fortunate that something or someone spooked them off and they didn’t get the truck. The officer who took the report said there have been a new round of thefts and they are thinking it is a new ring moving from lot to lot.

It’s been over a month since I posted anything.... I am glad I got through May and into June.... the way my luck was going I was getting a little nervous just getting out of bed!
So... my wife and I decided to officially put our house in Houston on the market so my most of my time lately has been getting it ready to show. Not sure where we are moving to if we sell but we decided that we needed to downsize as we spend all of our free time at the Barn and taking care of two places was getting a little overwhelming. As an aside, we did finally and officially (registered LLC and homestead) our little place now to be known as “Rocky CreeK Ranch.” One of my future projects will be to build a gate with the name emblazoned somewhere.
On to the projects.... I had to sand and seal the front porch floor and hand rails.
I decided to try a finish called Ipe Oil (floor is Ipe) which I actually got through Home Depot as I had heard good things. It dries to a satin luster but you do have to be careful not to let it pool or will get gummy as hell like any tung oil based finish will.
I also did get a few new toys...I mean tools recently in some auctions... i bought two lift tables I hydraulic the other uses air bags which is pretty cool. Both are 4000 lb rated but I doubt I will ever get that close in my use. I have one in the metal shop that is 48” x 60” and the other 36” x 72” in the wood shop.
I wanted it to be mobile so I built a frame out of some 4” 11 gauge tubing I had and added some 6” casters. The height when lowed is 19” to top of the table and just under 50” fully raised up.
It will make for example, the restoration of the Snap-On blast cabinet sitting on it (another auction item for 35 bucks) much much easier. I will use this cabinet for bead blasting and the other cabinet with some more aggressive media.
I am looking forward to getting some QST in over the week of the 4th. We have some big projects going on at RCR which I will update over the next few weeks.

Well congrats on putting the city pad up for sale. I wish you all lots of fortune with the sale and even more luck finding a new pad. We’ve looked at hundreds of homes and only found two recently that make the short list.
The porch looks insane, nice job as always. And last but not least, you completely **** on the recent tool snags. $35 for a SO cabinet...oh ya you **** a huge set on that one.

Sorry guys I didn't see these. I guess my notifications have quit...
I am having a logo made as well as a few t-shirts and hats for the family with the new name.
As for projects have not had much time as between work and trips to doctors/hospital for my sons checkups it has been hard to get away.
I did manage to sand most of the Snap On sandblast cabinet I am restoring.
The metal is in good shape but the paint is very hazed. You can see the original color where the glove rings and Snap On logo were. Hopefully I will be able to paint this in a couple of weeks.

I also did get a little bit of welding in on the new to me lift table.
Previously, the table had a floor mounted pole that held the controls for the lift. I needed it to now be mobile with the table so I took the pole and cut a 45 to make an L.

I was having an issue with the bead as I couldn't seem to get the wire speed right. It wasn't until I finished welding and was rolling up my gun hose I noticed I had a big crimp in the line. it was enough to slow the wire down leaving me with worse than my normal as Jody would say Fido's **** welds... I will be replacing the sleeve next week with a new that I picked up from my LWS. I am not sure what I did to crush it but I am surprised the wire made it through.
I was going to make a hinge but when shopping for some new LED lights for my trailer I found this hinge for 10 bucks and it was offset like I needed so that problem was solved.

The controls now swing out of the way and travel with the lift making it much easier to operate.

In my haste to get it done I managed to cut the 45 the wrong way as I wanted to have the controls perpendicular to the table versus parrell but the way it is now it clears the table if I or someone else is not paying attention while lifting the table.

Thanks John, the red cabinet is 26” HF tool chest that is going into a corner bench I have to make to finish out the back wall. I just picked up the steel and if all goes to plan I will start this next weekend.

Sorry Don, my notifications don’t seem to work anymore on this thread. Thank you for the comments on the porch. Hopefully it will pay off in selling the house. We were supposed to be on MLS two weeks ago but for numerous reasons it didn’t make it on their until this last Thursday. Friday we had four calls for showings today.
You are right about the lift tables, I can’t imagine not having one now. I have only used the one in the metal shop so far but it has been a huge help and my back is also loving the height adjustment!

Ok so projects in the shop have been a little sparse as we were preparing to sell our house. Good news those house projects are done and it’s back to the ranch for more fun projects.
The only thing accomplished lately was a brake job and oil change for my daughters car. I mentioned in my Barn thread that I had never done a disc brake job which I knew I would catch some grief on and which I fully deserved. I have to say it was a much easier job than I thought it would be. I am not going to lie, I might have YouTubed for a little guidance in the reassembly part! Here is me test fitting parts to be sure I was on the right track and then I dissembled and cleaned up the new rotors and brackets. I will be doing my own brakes from now on as I dug through my daughters receipts in the glove box (one of the few rules of mine she follows) to see who did the brakes previously because I wanted to drive there and castrate the SOB. The rotor retaining screw was missing on both sides, which while not critical shows sloppy work so a trip the parts store fixed that issue. However, the bottom pad retaining clips on both calipers were missing. I don’t know if this was a safety issue but it certainly caused the pad to wear unevenly which is what was causing the sound and the pulsating she mentioned that made me want to check the brakes. I won’t name the company but let’s just say they had a scandal about their tires on Fords a few years back.
Anyway, I scored points with my wife and came a little closer to justifying my lift!
As an aside, I hope I am not violating any rules but I will be selling my Snap On 5HP 60 gallon air compressor as I bought a new 10Hp 80 gallon for the metal shop. If anyone is local or is willing to drive I will make you one hell of a deal as bonus for the pain and suffering of reading through this thread! I would rather not deal with Craigslist and if no one is interested I will give it to a friend of mine so I am serious about making you a good deal. Just PM me if interested.

I mentioned in my Barn thread that I had never done a disc brake job which I knew I would catch some grief on and which I fully deserved. I have to say it was a much easier job than I thought it would be. I am not going to lie, I might have YouTubed for a little guidance in the reassembly part! Here is me test fitting parts to be sure I was on the right track and then I dissembled and cleaned up the new rotors and brackets. I will be doing my own brakes from now on as I dug through my daughters receipts in the glove box (one of the few rules of mine she follows) to see who did the brakes previously because I wanted to drive there and castrate the SOB. The rotor retaining screw was missing on both sides, which while not critical shows sloppy work so a trip the parts store fixed that issue. However, the bottom pad retaining clips on both calipers were missing. I don’t know if this was a safety issue but it certainly caused the pad to wear unevenly which is what was causing the sound and the pulsating she mentioned that made me want to check the brakes. I won’t name the company but let’s just say they had a scandal about their tires on Fords a few years back.
Anyway, I scored points with my wife and came a little closer to justifying my lift!
As an aside, I hope I am not violating any rules but I will be selling my Snap On 5HP 60 gallon air compressor as I bought a new 10Hp 80 gallon for the metal shop. If anyone is local or is willing to drive I will make you one hell of a deal as bonus for the pain and suffering of reading through this thread! I would rather not deal with Craigslist and if no one is interested I will give it to a friend of mine so I am serious about making you a good deal. Just PM me if interested.
