Duker, what is your daughter driving that requires six lug wheels and dual piston calipers? A larger SUV?

And yes, pride in workmanship is a scarce commodity these days.

Hey Dan, thanks for checking in. The car is a Chevy Traverse so I guess they call it a mid-size SUV although it’s a front wheel drive car.

Good show on the brake job D. Plus you’ve earned a holy hell man on the new compressor. What are you planning on doing that needs that much capacity or was it a GJ Duke the tool man moment :p

Ok so projects in the shop have been a little sparse as we were preparing to sell our house. Good news those house projects are done and it’s back to the ranch for more fun projects.

The only thing accomplished lately was a brake job and oil change for my daughters car. I mentioned in my Barn thread that I had never done a disc brake job which I knew I would catch some grief on and which I fully deserved. I have to say it was a much easier job than I thought it would be. I am not going to lie, I might have YouTubed for a little guidance in the reassembly part! Here is me test fitting parts to be sure I was on the right track and then I dissembled and cleaned up the new rotors and brackets. I will be doing my own brakes from now on as I dug through my daughters receipts in the glove box (one of the few rules of mine she follows) to see who did the brakes previously because I wanted to drive there and castrate the SOB. The rotor retaining screw was missing on both sides, which while not critical shows sloppy work so a trip the parts store fixed that issue. However, the bottom pad retaining clips on both calipers were missing. I don’t know if this was a safety issue but it certainly caused the pad to wear unevenly which is what was causing the sound and the pulsating she mentioned that made me want to check the brakes. I won’t name the company but let’s just say they had a scandal about their tires on Fords a few years back.

7c24c6c2dffe2ea82f421fe37db1eb0c.jpg

Anyway, I scored points with my wife and came a little closer to justifying my lift!

As an aside, I hope I am not violating any rules but I will be selling my Snap On 5HP 60 gallon air compressor as I bought a new 10Hp 80 gallon for the metal shop. If anyone is local or is willing to drive I will make you one hell of a deal as bonus for the pain and suffering of reading through this thread! I would rather not deal with Craigslist and if no one is interested I will give it to a friend of mine so I am serious about making you a good deal. Just PM me if interested.

Here is the compressor.

Cam, when have we ever needed a real excuse to buy a new tool? [emoji51]

Actually, I became a convert to air sanders and drills years ago in my woodworking. I have been looking for an excuse to upgrade my compressor and my son now working in the shop with me gave me that excuse... at least in my mind! The guy who installed my lift for me said if I ever needed a new compressor let him know as he had a great line of compressors that he would make me a good deal on.. and that’s how the beast came to sit in my garage.

Hey Duker, just stop by to see what you're up to.

Hope all is well.

Doing well Craig other than the heat and being too busy at work to get in enough shop time. Hope all is well on your side of the gulf! Thanks for stopping by!

Gerard, I think it just might be just enough to fill up some inter tubes for floating on the river! I think this one will last me into retirement! Thanks for dropping in!

Hey Duke,

Just checking in, See how you and the family are doing?

Also, I was wondering if that compressor was a true 5hp model? I see a plug on the end of it..... that is a big no-no on GJ to show that... as far as I know.

Hey John sorry for the delay it has been crazy this week. You are correct there is a 30amp plug on that compressor... Busted and guilty as charged! My only excuse is that I have no power into the metal building. I run my whole metal shop right now with two extension cords 1-120v and 1-240V that come from the woodworking shop next door. The bad news is that will still be for a couple more weeks... the good news is that my electrician just started to install the panels this week and will install both of my rotary phase converters (woodshop and metal shop) and outlets in the metal shop.

Thanks for stopping in!

Hey Duker,

Just found this thread for the first time and enjoyed reading through it. You've picked up a lot of nice equipment at auctions over the years. I'm starting to keep an eye on the local auctions and picked up a few things at one last summer; it's amazing how little some stuff goes for.

I'll take your compressor off your hands; you deliver to Washington, right? :p123:spit:

I'm curious what those wannabe thieves were thinking pulling the ignition out of your truck. I haven't researched new vehicles' anti-theft systems in depth but I know that without the right key or a hacked ECM the vehicle isn't going anywhere under its own power.

So how is that South Bend lathe coming along? :ninja:

Sorry for the delay I was out of town for a few days on my last work trip for the year!

Thanks for stopping in, now with both shops almost done I am hoping to post more actual projects.

You could have had the compressor, just needed to make a road trip! As for my truck and the lathe... the truck was a serious “pita” as the dealer took about a week to get in the parts and fix it. I hope Karma comes back to bite those guys in the ***. The police told me the had a video of the guys but couldn’t identify the plates of their vehicle so nothing was ever done. The SB lathe has been sitting in storage waiting for its day to be moved to the metal shop. I am almost done with the walls there and hope to finish up this next week so maybe it will spend New Years in the shop and get some TLC that it needs this next year!

Thanks again for checking out the thread.

Took advantage of the nice weather and enjoyed a break from putting up the plywood walls in the metal shop to work on the in and out feed tables for my metal saw.... should make it much easier to work with material...

The open side will have some rolling expandable metal baskets to hold scrap and small pieces of stock.

Man that metal shop is looking GOOD!

Thanks Dan, it is coming together slowly, much too slow actually as I have about another two or three days of putting up plywood and it will be done with the “construction” phase. My penchant for plugs is biting me in the a$$ as I have to cut in for every one of them! A little painting and other than my air system I will be done.

I am looking forward to putting equipment where it needs to go which should be in the next couple of weekends.

Duke, how much metal do you cut?

I hope you wired that new compressor correctly!

John I cut a lot of metal but most of it has been for friends. In the last few months I have helped a friend build a gate, another add a smoker to his BBQ, another build a base for a table etc... now I am finally getting to my stuff. I built the bases for the roller feed tables as I was tired of using folding roller stands that were wobbly. Now I can finish building my benches in the shop and start work on my table saw out feed stations for the wood shop.

Oh, and the compressor is still on a plug but I will be working on that section of the plywood wall today so by the end of the weekend it will be hard wired with a cutoff switch!

Thanks for stopping in guys I hope you had a great Christmas and wish you an even better New Year!

So a little different kind of project......

This last Friday was my son’s birthday and for a gift he wanted us both to attend a blacksmith forging class. We drove to Bryan to attend an all day class at Steephollow Forge.

ee3cb1021b3957a6ac00595ab1fb0486.jpg

Jeff Lee was our instructor and we had a great time. We started off making nails to learn the proper hammer technique and basics like how to draw out material.

We moved on to working and shaping the metal. The next project was to take some flat bar to make a bottle opener. This is what the progression of steps looked like.

e33a48c00276be86966c21a077de5036.jpg

From there we took some 3/8”square and we could make whatever we wanted so I made a fire poker with some embellishments. Here they are sitting on the anvil I used.

b65e72761c6089c7fbf50d1983ef651a.jpg

It was a lot of fun, and my son and I had a good day together.

Looks like you probably got an A on your first two assignments lol, they turned out great!

Thanks, I think I averaged more like a “B” ....I. didn’t show you any of the nails I made! They looked more like mini railroad spikes! I think with what we learned I could make some crude cabinet handles or door hardware which is what I might try next.

Duker looks great, nothing like quality time with your son doing something that you both enjoy!

Thanks John, it was good fun for both of us and a great excuse to spend some time with him. It will be interesting to see what he will make in his gas forge after getting some confidence.

Working 70 to 80 hour weeks has killed most of my shop time. I thought being sequestered at the barn would give me some more free time but other than a sprinkler system for my wife most of my projects have come to a screeching halt...

I did manage to finish the wiring of the metal shop. One of my challenges was when I installed the electrical boxes I installed the wrong kind for the wall plates I had planned on using in the shop. Not being an electrician I didn’t realize the double gang boxes I installed would be a problem but my electrician said it would be challenging to find plates to fit. At the time I said I would worry about it later... we’ll later came...

After scouring the web the best solution I could find was these wall plates...

0a0c6a162fb40025796c0fef5e358734.jpg

I had to take this plate and convert it to a four screw as I couldn’t find an adapter to work. Some drilling on the mill (which I finally got into place...)

e2c734a9c227fedf79445968871419b1.jpg

and I ended up with this...

2cd58151e80a4b7362b1952004fc9962.jpg

I was going to leave the chrome looking screws as I was tired of messing with it but my OCD couldn’t take it and I have ordered some stainless screws to replace them. See what you people have done to me....

So now I have walls of stainless plates...

I did make a little progress on my steel storage rack...

You might notice in the background my wife’s next project for me... a “free” boat... I told her there is no such thing...

Last but not least... the first shipment of my Christmas present arrived....

Looking forward to playing with it in the next couple of months...

nothing in life is ever truly free. Duker

Did she find out on https://www.free-boat.com/free/ was it a warehouse deal?

I wish it was a warehouse deal... I could at least return it! Our neighbor in Houston had it and offered it to my wife. The only catch was we had to get it out of his yard. Two new tires and so much for FREE....

Your garage is looking great! Are you getting a plasma cutter? I'm Jealous!

Yeah it’s a Langmuir CNC pro plasma table. I am fired (excuse the pun) to try it out.

'Free' boat, haha. Yes, depends on the definition of free.

I am already looking forward to the second happiest day of a boat owner... the day he sells/gives it away... again!

So no fun today as I have been looking over spreadsheets for work all day but I did get a day in the shop yesterday.

I had to cut 8 3/4” pads for casters for the steel rack I am building. Got those cut quickly on the HEM saw so the next step was drilling and tapping 32 3/8-16 holes in the pads. I tried power tapping on the mill and the first three holes worked great then on the fourth I snapped the Tap. It was a Dormer Tap which historically has been good quality so my guess was that it was my speed and/or technique. I only had one more Tap so I hand tapped the rest using my Gearwrench ratcheting tap wrench. It was a life saver.... after a couple of hours they were ready to weld to the base of the rack and this is where I ended the day.... casters mounted and now ready for the other vertical post and then the horizontal rack posts.

3cb28bc9ec535694d6a2b911c6ccf71c.jpg

I have big plans for the back of the rack.....

looking good Duker.

Thanks John! It’s been slow going finishing the rack but it will definitely help with organizing and storing the steel. I will have my clamps and dry cut saw on the back as well as a few other goodies...

Lol... You will have to wait and see on the steel rack.

The Gearwrench ratcheting tap wrench was something I picked up on a Amazon Warehouse Deal.

The tap wrench is oversized versus a regular tap wrench but it is easy to use. Being able to flip a switch to back up the tap sped up the process and saved my hands!

I love it that the mill is on wheels. Any particular reason for that?

The wheels are a left over from my previous shop where I needed everything mobile to be able move stuff around to work on projects. I found however the height ended up being perfect with the mobile base and with a impact I can lower the leveling feet to make it stable and to level it if needed so I have kept it on the base. Thanks for stopping in!

That's a nice sized shop you have there Duker.
And it looks like it is V E R Y well equipped.
I'm waiting to see what you have planned for the back of the metal rack.

I need to find a better storage solution for my metal.

Thanks Don! I appreciate the comments. Of course after seeing your place which is the Gold standard of shops, I am still in the Bronze category but I am happy with the space although the progress has been slow to get it in useable form.

I will hopefully have the steel rack completely done by June... I was hoping May but we sold our house and looks like there will be a move between now and then... and I have no idea where we will be moving to...!

Ok....so this is how yesterday started off....

82e8e143b47e85e2d0a1bb3f5da631ee.jpg

It started that way as I had to travel back to our house in Houston as we have a contract on the house to sell and it looks like it is going to go through as the buyers have now sold their house. I needed to clean out my old garage so I started to pack up the truck and trailer. I waisted waaaay too much time as I found things I forgot I had...

Anyway...headed back to the Barn and stopped at the storage unit I have to unload everything until I can complete some projects first before I bring it all to the shop.

The only thing I got done was to hang my Cox reel for my torch and another air reel.

Here is my red neck torch cart for now...

I will need to build a wall mount setup as now that I have 75’ of torch length on the reel I don’t plan on moving the tanks around. I have a smaller set in the woodshop should I need something mobile.

Here was the small project yesterday...

I mounted them to some 6” x 5/8” plate I had using some grade 8 hardware.

Nice Duker showing off your Cox....

So you hung your reels, nice job by the way, now you just need some extensions to the tanks and plumb some airline. How high are those reels from the ground?

Congrats on the possible sale of your home.

Super envious of your Langmuir CNC. I tried to buy one the day they launched on their crowd funding phase and there must have been a gazillion guys all clicking the button at the same time. Within 20 seconds all the first-tier pricing was gone. I was so pissed that I never looked back lol Maybe someday I'll get one.

I had to take this plate and convert it to a four screw as I couldn’t find an adapter to work. Some drilling on the mill (which I finally got into place...)

and I ended up with this...

Duker, looking good.

Great mod on the outlet cover, had to do that a few times.

But....... steel screw don’t match the stainless ones, and...... no of them are clocked.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Thanks for showing that nice Gearwrench, another tool I’ll be buying.:lol_hitti

Since the paddle switch is before the VFD, it’s just like unplugging DP from wall.

Damn, took me awhile to post that response.

The picture of the horizontal saw and outfeed rack really shows the size of your metal shop. From the construction pics, it seemed smaller.

You’re selling your house? Wow, it’s been that many years since the barndominum has been completed. I imagine you’re ready to be living in the country. Looking forward to more fun.

Hey Duker, haven’t made the rounds to everyone for a while, stop in to your place and it cost me $125!

I couldn’t decide which Gearwrench tap ratchet to get, came across a master set and just bought it.

I also have a fair amount of tapping to do for some base plates, so it should come in handy.

Anyway, the place is looking good.

Stay safe and healt!
