Duker, looking good.

Great mod on the outlet cover, had to do that a few times.

But....... steel screw don’t match the stainless ones, and...... no of them are clocked.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Thanks for showing that nice Gearwrench, another tool I’ll be buying.:lol_hitti

Thanks Craig.... of course now you have thinking about all those screws to clock!
Since the paddle switch is before the VFD, it’s just like unplugging DP from wall.

Damn, took me awhile to post that response.

The picture of the horizontal saw and outfeed rack really shows the size of your metal shop. From the construction pics, it seemed smaller.

You’re selling your house? Wow, it’s been that many years since the barndominum has been completed. I imagine you’re ready to be living in the country. Looking forward to more fun.

Wow, Shorty.... That project was along time ago...at least it feels like it... I realized I need to go back and fix the pictures in this thread as well.

Yeah the house is sold...we haven’t closed yet but hopefully in a couple of weeks. Don’t know if I am ready to retire to the Barn just yet but it has been nice being sequestered here for awhile.

Nice Duker showing off your Cox....

So you hung your reels, nice job by the way, now you just need some extensions to the tanks and plumb some airline. How high are those reels from the ground?

Congrats on the possible sale of your home.

Lol. Well I guess a blue Cox is better than blue ...well you get the idea.... the hose reels are a little over 8ft from the mounting plate. I needed them high enough to be able to slide a storage cabinet under the red air reel.

Super envious of your Langmuir CNC. I tried to buy one the day they launched on their crowd funding phase and there must have been a gazillion guys all clicking the button at the same time. Within 20 seconds all the first-tier pricing was gone. I was so pissed that I never looked back lol Maybe someday I'll get one.

I am getting excited to put it together. I am just waiting on the last shipment to be sent. I am looking forward to using it for some projects for the shop initially then for some furniture ideas I have.

Hey Duker, haven’t made the rounds to everyone for a while, stop in to your place and it cost me $125!

I couldn’t decide which Gearwrench tap ratchet to get, came across a master set and just bought it.

I also have a fair amount of tapping to do for some base plates, so it should come in handy.

Anyway, the place is looking good.

Stay safe and healt!

Craig, I think you will like that tap wrench....! I might have to get that master set!

So I finally had a chance to work in the shop a couple of nights this week. Yesterday I cut up one of the maple tops I have had in storage that I got from one of my neighbors when they moved.

I only needed about 23” and this top worked as it was splitting just about that width.

I used an older worm drive Skilsaw my father-in-law gave to me that I love. It will cut anything.

02048ef6d5ec11e9d76c8842282e22eb.jpg

I needed a temporary workbench top for the machine shop to have a place to do small projects and a spot to hold some HF tool cabinets I bought to use as machinist chests. I was tired of having all my measuring tools and end mills etc stored in different locations and boxes. I couldn’t find any Kennedy type cabinets that were in decent shape so I bought the HF boxes to use as storage

This will work until I can weld up a frame to drop the cabinets into and build a better bench top.

That maple top you cut was like 5ft wide, how many do you have left? How thick is that?

Looks nice. Those saws are tough as hell.

What did the neighbor use it for?

Hope all is well with you and your family.

Good progress!

Thanks Sean, how has the new garage been working out? I need to stop n and check on the progress.

John, The family is doing well. I hope you and your family are doing alright,

in regards to the tops, I got three maple tops with that one being the widest. My neighbor got them from his work. He works for Exxon and was ask to relocate overseas so he asked if I wanted them as he didn’t want to ship and have to deal with them. They are a little beat up but i will rip them up and re-glue them for the woodshop down the road.

Today was cleaning day.... I have had all these little projects and it was time to cure some FSD-flat surface disease... I took a break from that for awhile so that I could start cleaning the 1340 Standard Modern lathe. I had Community Motor in Porter rewire the motor as for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to go from 480 to 240 as the motor also has a brake but no wiring diagram.

31bd1f4c492527a2d2916091387a9fdd.jpg

About 2 hours later and a quart of WD-40 (as I was out of diesel) and Orange Degreaser I got the drive gears and motor area cleaned up.

At this rate I will have a solid couple of days to clean the rest....!

Duker how goes the move?

Hey John, we survived the move.... my muscles are just now starting to recover! I now have the fun of of trying to figure out what to do with all the stuff we put in a storage unit.

Thanks for checking in!

So the projects took a little backseat for awhile.... I was hoping to be done with the major projects for the metal shop by June but between working weekends, moving and some time helping neighbors clean up after the tornado I am probably a month behind. When life hands you lemons.... sometimes you just have to give it the finger, grab a beer and move on.....

I did find a solution for my torch setup. I was going to build something but was perusing an auction catalog and saw these forklift torch stands going up for sale in New Caney which is right up the road from me. A few days later it was on its way to its new home...

A little spray paint and torch rack is done!

8767e1d37c0885bdd99096db83975a9e.jpg

I did also get stage one of the steel rack completed. The next stage is building the storage that will be on the back.At some point I will get some paint on it but it is a low priority for now.

96f1dc8c53d45a030b62a1f27806606d.jpg

My Father’s Day gift came in a little early, a new Grizzly 3’ x 72’ belt grinder. I happened to be the only one out at the Barn when the driver showed up to drop it off. I was thankful to have the gantry to be able to put it together as I can’t quite lift things like I used to anymore...

01c84a6081f2d34529c0b3d24cc49041.jpg

Last but not least the remainder of the Langmuir Pro plasma cutter showed up. That will push projects back another couple of weeks as I am sure I will want to test it out after getting it together. Worse case it will add to the ever growing list of things I want to build...

nice score on the torch rack.

2 nice additions to your collection of tools.

What is that thing on the pallet behind the grizzly?

Ah, I was just thinking about your barndominum this morning.
Some serious tank racks. Good deal.
Now on the metal storage rack, Nice Rack. Wow that’s big. It’s a ways for me to come for material but worth it. lol. I assumed you were more woodworking but looks like metalwork is moving up fast. Will you be building wood/metal pieces of art?

Thanks John. It was fortuitous to find the torch tank rack as I don’t know when I would have gotten to it and this is a much safer alternative to my red neck storage solution.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the Grizzly, it was more stout than I thought it would be considering the price.

The big bandsaw behind the Grizzly is an Oliver 116D. It has 36” inch throat and is eventually heading over to the wood shop. I got it on the trailer to move with a portable gantry and used the metal shop one to unload it. It’s heavier than my tractor can lift so I need to rent a Genie lift to move it over.

Hey Shorty, thanks for stopping by. The metal shop priority was pushed ahead of the wood shop as my son likes to play in the shop and I enjoy having him there so I wanted to keep the incentive to keep him coming out to the shop. He has been doing a little forging and even had a friend come out so he could show him how to do some basic metal work. And btw, you can come out anytime and get some material.... I don’t know if you noticed the flat bed trailer sitting there with a load of metal on it still waiting to be cleaned up and stacked on the rack!

The wood shop is going to be the second half of the year project as I have a bunch of things to make for the wood shop in the metal shop. The goal is to have the shop fully functional by December... I am only about a year behind of my original plans!

Thanks Dan! The bandsaw is a beast but it cuts wood like butter. I need to put new tires on it and am dreading that task as they are a pain to install and then crown them as well. It will be a 2021 project as it’s way down on the list. It’s a good thing I don’t have a white board for projects like Mike Z as it would depress me to see a white board the size of my shop wall! Thanks for dropping by!

I see you’re continuing to kick **** in there.

Those bottle racks have the steel in between the bottles to satisfy a OSHA rule. We’ve built a few over the years at the company I work at. Nice ones!

So.... as if I didn’t have enough unfinished projects for the shop I just added one more......

Meet the newest addition that will be making its way to the to the machine shop bay...

e6fd150f005cd6e09e0bb8a6bf3ebc7d.jpg

I am still trying to confirm the year but I believe it is a 1947 American Pacemaker 16 x 56” multi production lathe. 86Turbodsl’s thread of his restoration of his a Pacemaker finally threw me over the edge to go and hunt for one of these lathes. I have been wanting to find either this or a Monarch but the vintage Art Deco styling of the Pacemaker was always my favorite. The lathe will need a good scrubbing on the paint but mechanically it appears to be in great shape. Now I need to find a forklift rental big enough to move it into the shop!

Post pictures, I love seeing how people rig things. What's the weight of that monster? I'm guessing 8,000ish lbs?

According to the manual it’s 8750lbs.... I will try and snap some pics of the move.

Nice score on the lathe :)

Thanks BF, my son is more excited than I am to get it into the shop which is cool. He is slowly becoming a shop rat like me which I thought would never happen.

Duker you're going to love that Pacemaker.

There is nothing like taking 1/4" off in a single pass and being within a thou.

I have the same lathe in a 1954 vintage and we just moved it from NJ to FL.
I rented a 6K rough terrain fork lift, I wanted an 8k but nobody had one. The 6k picked it but it was **** pucker close. The back wheels of the fork lift were just bouncing off the ground.

Mac, I was just reading your restoration thread on Hobby Machinist. Your lathe turned out beautiful, that was a very nice “refresh!” I think that is what I am going to do to this one as well but over time. I think I found an all terrain that will lift 10K so I just need to schedule it hopefully for this Friday. I need to move my 36” Oliver Bandsaw over to the wood shop so,I can knock out both over the weekend.

Duke that looks awesome...

Thanks John, I think it will be a nice addition to shop.

The lathe has landed.... well at least it’s close to its final spot until I can set the pucks under it to begin the leveling process.

It started with me renting this....

0d2b66d7b925e59b8249ec674ca872e9.jpg

I am going to call this a mini journey as it came very close to being a giant epic fail....

Before I moved the lathe I had to move the Oliver bandsaw over to the wood shop which meant I needed to weld up some feet to be able to move it with the pallet jack over in the wood shop.

3c1cc5c0a2c4c0d9c4f46c3840c0b6ac.jpg

Some 3” tube and some 5/8” plate and done... I used the gantry to lift the bandsaw on the the feet and then bolted and step one done.....

With the forklift I had plenty of muscle to get the lathe off the trailer.... unfortunately I couldn’t get the forks under the bed of the lathe as the pipe sides of the trailer were too tall. Not a problem I planned for that and had some slings ready to go.

Unfortunately from here on out I didn’t get any pictures as I was trying to concentrate on the task at hand...it’s too bad as I could have put a clinic on of what not to do....

So....thirty to forty five minutes later of playing with the balance points the lathe is off the trailer. Once off of the trailer I was planning on setting it down and picking it up under the bed but it was looking like rain again so I thought it’s riding ok just keep on going.... big mistake...

We had a lot of rain and so I am making my away around some mud and I hit a sink hole and the fork lift dives forward and the lathe catches the ground and spins in the slings....

I can’t set the lathe down as the carriage and all the handles are now facing down and the lathe is at a precarious angle with one sling very close to coming off of the fork as it was pulled forward when the lathe spun.

Panic mode is about to set in but I seriously found myself more pissed thinking Mike Z would never have let this happen...

I get two of my heavy steel sawhorses and try and work the lathe onto them. I get it resting on one and plan B finally comes to my rescue as I get my tractor and use some straps to help turn the lathe back up. The lathe is positioned straight enough that I set it on the ground. I get a 4 x 6 piece of wood and a 2 x 6 and place them under the bed so that I can clear the feed screws etc..

I slowly make my way to the edge of the shop, use the boom to feed the lathe closer to where it will reside setting it some 3/4 pipe to be able to roll into final position.

I finally have enough sense of relief I snap a shot as I am backing out from the bay.

ada35af76b679d7e56da3216d85d14ee.jpg

With the help of my AWD Chinese toe jack and the pipes I work it into place.

40850d8279dfa13dfb0fee8e3bef7eb7.jpg

Just out of curiosity I plug in the DRO and it works great!

2fe8be381b5f5016d86c3a126b9e9f62.jpg

After a few prayers to the big man upstairs and a few apologies for some colorful language the lathe is in place ready to begin a new life of making chips... well after some wiring and clean up!

Duke, no GoPro?

You are right this wouldn't have happened with Mike Z, he wouldn't have had a sink hole in his yard.

Glad it ended well. That thing is massive looking.

Awww man, no pics? I’m unsubscribing. Like they say, no pics, it didn’t happen. Plus it never rains in the summer, in the South. Lol.

With the GoPro suggestion, I think a re-enactment is in order.

You guys are killing me! I get the sweats just thinking about unloading it again.... John you are right Mike would never have a sink hole! Just so you know the size... it took 3 full buckets of top soil to fill it in and it’s still like a pot hole.

As for the go-pro..... it’s on the Christmas list....I am sure I will be able to provide plenty of screw ups in the future for you guys!

Duke updates?

Hey John, my day job has been killing me lately but I will try and post a few little progress pics this weekend. Thanks for checking in!

He’s been a busy boy with the new toy.

Lol I wish Cam.... have not even had a chance to wire it up... in fact if anyone knows a good electrician I could use them right now. My usual guy is working on a huge project and I won’t see him until Christmas!

How is your house/shop hunting coming along? You guys sell the CA house yet?

We gave up house hunting and just rented a joint so I could take my time getting the majority of stuff out here. The house is really close to putting a sign in the yard and hopefully we didn’t miss the bus on this one. But once it’s gone we’re gonna wait till the perfect place pops up or we’re considering building. Or depending on what happens here in a couple months ;) wait and see what the economy brings to the table.

Hope you guys are doing well.
