Furnace and dedicated Vent Pipe are installed.

My next step is OSB 1/2" or Sheetrock 5/8" for the ceiling. Just wanted some opinions on which to use and why?

Side note- I will be putting 13" of blown in cellulose on top.

Thanks

(assuming your finishing up a garage?) One word, "Fire", think about it. OSB Burns, sheet rock doesn't (at least for an hour). Everybody does it (OSB in the shop), at one time most everyone smoked too....

Ive set vehicles on fire, in a shop, I know of several commercial shops that have burned to the ground, several home shops (my neighbor two doors down last year), and many many house-garage fires, most take out the house as well. Cars do catch on fire, and you don't have to be working on them to do that either. CAll you insurance agent that will be insuring the structure and ask his/her opinion (my S/O sells insurance, I get to hear lots-o-stories on losses)

I would not do it, and now at least 5-15 GJ members will chime in behind me and tell you its a good idea to use OSB. I guess this is one of those IQ tests... so there is one opinion for you ! Good luck on your decision and youre finish ! Bill

^ I was going to post the same thing.. Sheetrock, especially 5/8" typeX is better incase of a fire because it doesnt burn as quickly. Here in CT, its code to put 5/8" typeX on any wall / ceiling facing living space

For the ceiling I'd use sheetrock. It's cheaper, and will provide a fire barrier as mentioned. The downside is that taping the joints on sheetrock is a pain, but for a garage you don't necessarily have to have a glass smooth finish either.

lol, I did all the hanging, taping, and mudding in my garage. And I can assure you that smoothness is not a requirement in my garage.

Sounds good. Looks like I am going with 5/8" Sheetrock.

I'll be pulling down all the drywall in my garage in a couple weeks. I'm doing an addition and code requires Type-X for the walls and ceiling. I've decided to also replace the outside wall with it since it needs to be replaced in order to run new wiring and also insulate the wall. I have also decided to do a wainscoting also though to give the walls a bit more durability.
