Just picked up this sweet setup a 8" dayton grinder and a columbian #406 with swiveling rear jaw on a neet old metal fabricated bench. Anybody guess whats hammered down in the tappered hole for rear jaw. Its a 3" japan spark plug socket that reads 5/8". Thinking of grinding two flats opposite eachother to get a wrench on it. Anyone have one of these so I can know what the original pin is supposed to look like? I can't believe the casting didn't split down the parting line when the p.o. hammered the socket in.

I would agree, thank goodness. I thought it was just stuck in the top when I bought it, knowing it was tapered. Then when I got it home and it wouldn't budge I removed the jaw and looked from underneeth, and my new vise high instantly went away. I'll get it out tonight. Have to work on truck during daylight.

I would use a flaming hack-saw to remove the socket.....shouldn't take more than a minute.

use a dremel and cut a vertical groove at the socket to weaken it and then give it a good hit with a chisel and crack it open.....

clean up the square socket and get a breaker on it. Once it starts turning it should be reasonably easy to get out.

If that fails, weld a nut to it and used a long screw to jack it out...

On my Rock Island, the PO had pounded the pin in and cut it off flush with the vise body. It looked like it was welded in when I got it. I hit the back of the swivel jaw on each side a couple of times Hard. The pin actually popped up enough to just pull it out. The taper forced it upward.

I would weld a nut to the socket and use a slide hammer. If you use a breaker bar you might fracture the socket and make it more difficult.

Catalyze you have a rock island with rear swivel, would love to see a pic, I have a 577, thats seen better days. I was in the proccess of refurbing it when I found this columbian. The rock is missing its swivel base, its way more stout than this #406. But the rarity of a rear swivel jaw is just cool to me.

PO pounded a piece of all thread into socket. Igot it out then cleaned up socket and got a breaker on it and it barely turned, not enough to pull out. Its in there way tighter than I thought. Tried torch, but heat went straight through holein socket. So I tore it down to work from inside.

14-bolt, try heat through the middle of the socket again and then use a funnel to pour ice water down the center of the socket. Maybe a shock/shrink treatment will bust it lose.

Finally a little light pounding. I just really didn't want to crack the "hollow" casting. But kept hitting socket side to side and from bottom with lots of Pb Blaster. Than it wouldn't come out because I beat it so much so I took a grinder to the top and sent it the other way. Should of done that from start. Now its soaking with PB in its cracks :rocker:
