Dumb question about garage doors

A friend of mine gave me a 16' garage door that I am going to install on the open part of my shop. I have to buy all the hardware, rollers, track, etc.
My question is, will a garage door opener pull this door up and down without the spring assembly? I am talking about the assembly that goes up top with the cables on it.

A powerful door opener might work, but I'd expect it to burnout fairly quickly hauling all that extra weight.

I'd be more concerned about the dangers of not having a spring on that door...it would come flying down pretty darned quickly if something gave way...

I wouldn't have taken that door. Have you priced hardware yet. I wanted to buy just a single panel one time and decided against it when I found out that a single panel was as much as a whole door kit. Also, I would not install without a spring on both sides with the safety cable strung thru it. Please have someone help you. I hate hearing about someone getting hurt due to lack of manpower and experience.

Talk to Tom at American Door Supply, he should be able to set up up with tracks, cables and springs for far less than a whole new door. Installation really isn't that hard if you have basic mechanical skills. Here's a good write up on dealing with torsion springs, http://truetex.com/garage.htm

Nice write up. I sure wish I had it when I replaced my broken spring. What a learning experience!
