I've replaced plenty of plastic boxes where some knucklehead has driven a drywall screw into the boss, and split it in half, so no device could be properly held. I don't understand why it took until the 2014 code cycle to make this explicitly disallowed.
A guy can break most anything if he tries hard enough. Now we got a 3 inch deck screw involved, doesn't sound as tidy as a simple drywall screw in the original hole?

I fixxed a deal a carpenter had installed. Wouldn't have been so bad to pass a smooth nail thru the box but a deck screw was a different matter. It was a real chore and no one gonna pay me another hour to fix it. I found a piece of stiff plastic tube, slit it and forced it over the screw.
While it wasn't approved it was fixxed as no one got a chance to shove wires in against sharp screw threads.
I went and told them, I know you wanna help but we can't pass screws the the boxes.

Found out this receptacle had been hanging by the wires for at least 6 years. It's in roomies son's bedroom. He's 36, the one time I saw him use a wrench, he rounded off a fitting. Apparently having the receptacle several inches from the wall wasn't a priority.
I left the lamp unplugged to see if he notices when he gets home.. altho not sure when that will be, he's been holed up in an DT LA apartment for about 3 months owing to CV19 paranoia.
