Dump Trailer Build - Hydraulic or winch powered?

Hello,

Looking to start a dump trailer build next month and I can't decide between using Hydraulics or using a winch on a tower to dump the trailer.

It will be 6'x8' and I am looking for a 6k pound capacity. Hydraulics systems look to cost about 4x the winch cost hence the hesitation.

The trailer will be used 6-8 times per year only.

Thoughts?

Go run the landing gear up and down a couple of times on a empty 40' box trailer or reefer....Should give you an excellent perspective on a winch vs hydraulics of any type.

'Twas a facetious way to point out how much work it would be using a winch.... BTW, for that type of operation, it should be a worm gear style one, unless you like to take chances with a crank whirling at uncontrolled and blistering speeds should you ever lose your grip with the dump section up more than a few inches from the resting stops...

I would assume that when you say winch dump, you mean electric winch, not hand. I have build a Electric winch with boom dump bed and they work just fine but there is the hazard if the winch or cable breaks as it will come crashing down and you have the boom sticking up. My last dump bed was on my bobbed M35A2 military truck and I used a hoist kit from Premium Supply and it comes with everything you need including hinges, power pack, hoist and hoses....just weld it in. After using the hoist kit, I don’t think I would ever build an winch dump again.

IMO, hydraulics all the way!

The only way I'd build a cable winch type is if someone else paid me to build that for them and I would never use it myself. Not any safety issues or anything, just being lazy----hit the lever and watch it go up as about as hard as I want to work on that function.

It would be a 12v powered winch. I am not in the mood to be doing it by hand.

Don't be cheap go with a hydraulic hoist, after its all done you won't regret that you did.
