I got tired of having to take off the tailgate to my dump trailer every time I wanted to dump it. So, I decided to convert it to a swing barn gate style. I ordered up 4 weld on hinges from eBay and 3 gate latches. I received the latches to day, so I started the project. I only got a little bit don't, but as I get more done Ill keep posting the pictures.

Red, I don't think i recall ever seeing a Bri-Mar dump trailer without barn door.... I guess I never paid enough attention...

Seems like that would be a pain in the ****, remove tailgate to dump.

Good luck, keep us posted on your fabrication.

I got the hinges tack welded on tonight and the tailgate cut in half. I ended up running out of wire, so Ill pick some up tomorrow and with some luck get everything welded in. I know the welds aren't the best, but given its my first welding project I cant complain.

Its the 220. I see now that they have it in a 120/220 volt. Mine is only a 220 volt.
I've only run 1 spool of wire through it and so far is has been flawless. I don't really know how to weld (mig welding is great for guys like me), so I don't have anything to compare it to. It came with a spool gun for aluminum so I'm thinking about getting a bottle of argon and welding some aluminum ladder racks for my enclosed tool trailer.

Cool project. Only, are you designing your hinges to allow the doors to open all the way to the fenders? Cause, you wont be able to dump all the way without the doors bottoming out if the doors arent open at least 180° from closed.
Make sure they open all the way out, then you can fab up a chain to attatch to each door so they dont try to swing shut while dumping.
Good luck, post results.

I have used a brimar with a tailgate like yours and never had to remove the gate to get it to dump. Are you removing the bottom pins when dumping?
