The transfer station I used up in the San Fernando Valley only charged me $45 for a 16' trailer full of construction debris. I believe the place was owned by Crown Disposal.

The few times I rented a dumpster, again up in the SFV, I used a company called 'Singh Disposal' or 'Singh Construction' I don't recall which, but they charged $150 for a 10 yard dumpster, no concrete or dirt allowed and they let me keep it for two weeks for no extra charge.

I've rented a number of dumpsters for a couple of extreme renovations and, since I'm pretty cheap too, I try to do the following each time I rent one:
1. Put blocks under the lift end of the dumpster so any water drains toward the door.
2. Cover the dumpster with a tarp and it tie down at night or when it rains. Keeps out the water and the neighbors. Here in CT, if you go over the allowed weight, you get charged and extra fee. Water will soak into old construction material pretty quickly and doesn't dry out as fast. I know you're in SoCal, but good practice anyway.
3. Open the door and pack the dumpster as tight as possible. Don't just toss it in from the top. I stack any old boards or end cuts, break up anything I can make into smaller pieces, I fill in open areas with sweepings and sawdust.
4. Leave old doors and sheet goods for the end. Layer them on top and then jump on top to compress everything under.
5. Concrete, dirt, branches, etc. I take to a "stump dump" that charges me a much lower fee, $5-$10 a load in my truck. The trucking co. wants clean fill anyway and charges a higher fee for mixed loads.

BTW, love the garage. It's given me some inspiration for mine when I finally get going on the Old Bowling Alley.

Weird that you can't burn stuff. I have never lived in a city so the stuff that is normal to me I guess you guys would probably get put in jail? Can you shoot guns in your backyard? Would **** if I couldn't.

How about a campfire pit? Cut the scrap wood to 12-16" lengths and have a campfire.

There is a trash pickup here but it's about $40/month and if you want to do recycling that is $15/month extra. Considering we have about 1-2 std kitchen bags of trash a week, that would be stupid expensive.

Jack, look up mini haulers out of woodland hills, much smaller then regular size dumpsters that can be backed right into your driveway. Reg. dumpsters on the street need a permit. We use these on jobs when do not have room for big trash dumpsters.

Call the city or look on their website. I'm in Ohio and my city allows two separate pickups per year. They just want to know how large of pile in case they need 2 trucks. Last year, I used it for leaves (about 90 bags) and to get rid off old furniture and misc junk.

When I had to clean out my parents place I didn’t want a roll off dumpster.
Too big, too inviting for others to use (even in a very nice neighborhood) and too expensive because of the timeframe. (I was just stopping by some days after work and on the week ends when nothing else was on the scheduled.)

So I got one of the bins you see behind a lot of stores and restaurants. I think it was called a “3 yard.” It was on casters and could be rolled up and down the driveway. There was no scheduled rental fee. They only charged when they came to empty it. And they didn’t come until I called them.

The first time I called I pushed it down to the street and that is where I found it when I came back next time. The second time I called they got there before I did so it was up by the house. That is where they returned it. I found out that is the policy. They return it to where they found it.

I ended up having it for almost a year and it only cost me for 4 pick ups.

You can get a lot into them and they use powered arms to pick them up and dump into the truck. So I din't feel to bad when I loaded about 500 pounds of tile into it one time.

Dumpsters around here fill up, get raided, fill up some more (a lot of times by others), get raided, it's an endless cycle.

The town I recently moved out of, it was unlawful to use a roll-off bin at a residence without a building permit. The law stated that all residential trash had to be hauled by the contractor for the city.

Doesn't help Jack but FYI on this - lots of small cities have to sign franchise agreements with the big trash companies - BFI, etc, etc - or no trash pickup. which means the trash company has a lock on the city. No unauthorized dumpsters, etc. Our local agreement specifies one bulk pick up per month for one (1) item. Is BS but it is what it is. I figure 4-6 weeks to get rid of the concrete washout from the slab, about 50 lbs in the trash at a time. For smaller or medium stuff - everybody skirts around town and uses city hall or the school dumpsters. "Hey, you can't use that - that's for City Hall" "Hey - guess who pays the bill for that, I'll put what the hell I want in there. No tax dollars, no dumpster."

Have you tried bribing the city trash pickup guys? $100 will go a long way if you can get it to the front, and make it easy for them to load it quick. They make $50 each in about 15 - 20 min. Most are happy to do it, and I am happy to pay them.

Also, instead of looking for a dumpster pickup service, look for a compactor trash removal. Like the city trucks. There are a bunch around here. The prices are usually better as they can take on more ****, compact it, and keep going.

I just saw a commercial for Waste Management. They sell you a bag and you can put 3000# in it, the commercial said it's sold in home centers (Lowes or HD maybe)

My trash is changing to WM this month....we 'used' to be able to pick between two vendors....

I'm doing some major work at my house....I had a rock box in front of my house for a week...typical box...about 20'L x 8'W x 3'H....full on concrete....I then did 2 more dirt boxes in my driveway...a little bit larger......2 weeks....no one ever said anything about permits....I would be pissed if I had to have a permit to haul dirt out of my yard....but I do have permits for the construction.....

Cheap you say? Break it up, cut it up, whatever you need to do to fit it in a trash bag. Put as many bags on the curb as you can with your household trash and let the city haul it away for you. You're paying taxes for that after all, no sense paying twice. It might take longer and be a little more work than you want to get rid of it all, but as you stated, it took 3 years to accumulate it, a few more weeks to clear it out is no big deal.

The 1st of 2 dumpsters...

And what was left....not enough to fill up a dirt box....I have already gotten rid of about a 3rd.....what you see is the 2/3'rds that remains.....each week I fill up my trash cans...the neighbors on both sides.....Granny Francis's trash cans down the street and Lou's trash can up the other way.

I figure I'll have it about done in about 2 more months.

I live in Burbank and just got a bin - went through "Clean Up America". It was a smallish bin, and I thought that the price was good - about $119. However, they were a day late dropping it off, and the few days late in picking it up again. Then, when they picked it up they arrived on a Saturday morning before 7AM. They had said that they would call to let me know the pick-up time, but didn't do that and my car was blocking the bin. In any case, I felt I got a good price, but very iffy service. They have a variety of services and seem to be available all over southern california.

Could you do a uhaul trailer and go to the dump? That is the cheapest, but labor intensive.

Most local dumps(at least in NJ) won't let you show up with something with commercial plates unless you have a proper dumping license/permit. I know because I ran into this issue when I rented a U-Haul for this purpose. I ended up having to borrow a friend's truck.

Thais why you go to those Uhaul joints that rent non commercial cargo vans. Works just as well. A bit less space, but still.

Either way, bribing sanitation is still cheaper.

California seems to be a bad climate for 'junk' removal.
I remember back in 2003 when I was remodeling our kitchen at our house in Orange, I called up company 'A' for a small dumpster. Fee was pretty reasonable, but they said I couldn't use them because they wern't 'allowed' to set dumpsters in my city. Said I would have to go to company 'B'. Called company B. They were 'legal' but their fee was about 3X's what company 'A' was. I ended up throwing the stuff in my side yard, then rented a trailer and hauled it to the dump. Total cost: about $45 - including trailer rental.

Hmmmm....wonder why the city fathers don't allow competition between companies for this. Follow the $$$$$$$

I always try and meet the garage guy if I have a load of stuff. Give him a $20, $40, etc. depending on the amount and they always take it.

That's pretty stupid as the vehicle towing it was private and U-hauls are seldom rented by commercial trash haulers. Maybe CA ain't so bad....

Just did the Bagster deal on my garage and some of the debris I pulled out in a couple of closet rebuilds in the house. It was a pretty decent deal I have to say. I ordered the bag on Amazon. Just filled it up with **** and they picked it up today. The main downside I experienced is that it's just an open bag of junk in your driveway. Someone decided a few nights ago that they wanted to throw away some of their junk wood debris into my Bagster.

My city says absolutely no "construction waste". It difficult to cut up old 2x4 and plywood small enough to fit in a black plastic bag and NOT look like construction waste.

My son's city (less than 1/2 mile away) says, it is fits in a garbage can and it does not weight more than 50 lbs, they will take. He has done complete gut jobs on a full and a half bath. The pipe and tub was picked up by scrappers. The rest was cut up and put in cans. (It takes a while to cut up broken plywood, busted interior doors, etc). We had as many as 10-12 cans out at a time. They took it all !

Old firewood must be placed with the yard waste (no winter pickup)

Got Junk provides a useful service, but in my area, they aren't cheap.

I can get a 6 yard dumpster for $225 delivered, no time limit and a small pile of stuff to be picked up by Got Junk is $200... Going by their 1/8 load numbers, they are 8x as expensive as calling for a small dumpster.

The small dumpster (and small truck) fits into small areas which is a big plus. They will also do "hot loads"- drop it and stand by if you can load it in 20 minutes.

Of course, every region is different.
