I finally finished my new 24x30 garage and got moved in. Now im ready to tear down my old 14x20 garage and im trying to figure out what size dumpster i will need. I found a guy on craigslist with a 17 yard dumpster for a great price but he thinks i will need multiple loads. Any body have any knowledge on this?

Just a shell. Im gonna cut it up in sections, maybe 4x8' sections. So hopefully it can be nicely stacked

I have no experience with demolition, but can offer arithmetic. You've got about 900 square feet of wall and roof surface. If you can pack 2 square feet of surface material into 1 cubic foot of bin space, you're in the neighborhood of 15 cubic yards.

If you have a floor to demo, then that'll add a bunch more.

Roofing and all?, I'd say you'll eat up a 3/4 of a 40 yarder. Things never pack as nicely as you'd like unless you take your sweet *** time tearing it down and methodically pack it.

You're on the right track, but 4x8 is too big.

The smaller the pieces, the tighter you can pack it.

Tom

He is right, my dad has a dumpster at his shop for the past 15 years, and you would be surprised just how fast you can pack it full. Add to that if the trash isn't laying nice and you will be making multiple trips.
Also you must be careful of the weight, if the dumpster weighs to much full the city won't take it. I would say get a size or two larger than you think you may need to be on the safe side, that is if it isn't a huge sum of money.

Assuming 2x4 walls with a half inch layer of siding at 8 ft high, to make math easy, you have 4" thick walls. If you're perfect at tetris and stacking your materials, you have about 6.7 cy of wall not accounting for any openings. Assuming a 2x6 rafter with half inch decking, not accouting for joists or shingles, a 12/12 roof pitch and a gable roof gives you another 7.3 cy of structure. So perfectly stacked you have about 14 cy of structure, not considering the space of the garage door, joists, or materials not stacking correctly. My late night math, (which could be WAY off) I'd say depending on price and time, two loads would be more than enough if you don't just toss your waste into the dumpster.

If its a great price, have him bring one, fill it, then get another one. Unless the math on a single bigger roll-off is better.

OP . . . how much for the 17 yard dumpster ???

That is an odd size, is this a specialty hauler or what ??

What is length of time you can keep it ??

Charge per ton or fixed price ?? Is there max tonnage ?? Incremental after X tons??

Any hidden fees like Pickup, Drop-off, Mileage, etc ??

My guess is you could fit . . IF . . you keep debris Tall (your idea of 4'x8' is fine as long as you can lift it) . . . AND . . . you really pack it in tight.

I think i'd get a 30 yarder and hope it is one trip. The amount of time and effort that it would takr to neatly pack a dumpster isn't worth it to me.

Yeah, 17 yards sounds like an odd size.

A standard roll-off container comes in 10, 20, 30, and 40 yard sizes.

Honestly, I'd just call your local trash haulers and see what they offer for price on getting a roll off. Assuming you have the place to put it, that's the easiest way. They drop off the container, you fill it up, and they take it away.

Get the biggest one you can get and if there is still room - get rid of some the **** we all keep that we should get rid of. Also, if you have extra room you can't fill - extend the offer to your neighbors - they will be very happy to help fill it. I did this once and the next day there was a $50.00 gift card from Home Depot on my door from one of them.

Have you looked into having it done. That is about a half day job for an excavator and a couple of dump trucks. If you need the concrete gone also this would be the way to go.

From experience I fit one about that size in a 15 yd dumpster, just the building no concrete.

Pulled it down with the truck and a chain and cut it up into sections.

Anytime I got a rolloff they charged me a set fee for delivery and removal and the there was a dumping charge per ton....never made a difference what size the rolloff was so I just got the biggest that seemed logical.

If it's like the local haulers which have a contract with the city, they charge about double what someone else will charge - BUT you can't hire someone cheaper because of the contact with the city. You'll get fined, here. So might ask first - maybe your people are not as hateful as BFI LOL.

When I built my garage, I advertised the
old dilapadated one for free, and a guy
came and tore it down and hauled it off.
He said he could rebuild it, I said good riddens.

Might be able to save some dumpster space as well if you can give away the Man / Garage Doors and windows. I have picked up a few for free and given away some for free both times took less then 48 hours and they were gone.

I just tore out the same size garage and I filled a 40 yard all the way up. I cut out the siding with a recip. saw. and ripped it apart with a track hoe. My largest piece was 4X4 and I did not put the concrete in the dumpster. I had a separate skid for that. The dumpster guy tarped it, but said I was a little too full. Take a look at my garage build for the pictures of the tear out to compare sizes.

Not even half a day. Building that small should be down and loaded in a couple hours tops of the operator is good. You would be amazed how much stuff a good operator can pack into a dumpster as well.

This is my thought, offer it for free and see what happens.
Worse case nobody takes it
