Dunlap drill press spindle/quill bushing questions.

I picked up this little red Dunlap drill press that I think is functionally similar to the Craftsman 100/150. There's some runout/slop in the spindle so I want to replace the bushings. I managed to get the 2 brass bushings inside the quill out pretty easily by tapping them with an aluminum rod.

Now, I have to remove the top portion into which the spindle slides from the bottom (the piece with the female cogs that the pulley fits over) because there's some slop there as well. Do I press that out from the bottom or the top? Should I avoid tapping on the part that spins I site the bushing? I don't believe the bushing is accessible from the bottom since the only thing I can see from the bottom spins.

Last question. Where can I find replacement bushings? I have the model number... 103.23621. Are the parts similar enough to the Craftsman parts that they use the same bushings?

Thanks!

That splined pulley sleeve has a snap ring on the lower portion and should simply slide down through the sleeve bushing. If it doesn't, look for burrs from the set screws that are interfering. You may be able to tap the pulley sleeve down through the bushing.

When reinstalling the pulley bushing, it must protrude above the head casting. The underside of the pulley has a hardened(?) washer crimped in. This washer rides on the top edge of the bushing.

I can't help on where to get replacement bushings.

Id bet those are oilite bearings. Don't replace with brass. You will need to bore or ream them on a lathe to get as new clearance on the spindle. Oilite is a cheap way of getting precise tolerances.

You're all right on the money so far. Thanks for the help.

Oilite explains the oil hole through the casting right where the upper bushing is.

Anyhow, I found the snap ring and removed it and the little washer it sits in. I then tapped out the bushing. Unfortunately, I found that the bushing appears to have a very thin sleeve into which the snap ring and washer nest. Not realizing that, I damaged it when I tapped it out from the bottom.

Now I really need to find replacement bushings. The smaller ones for the spindle I mighy be able to find but the larger one for the pulley shaft that has the little sleeve has to be specialized. Do the Craftsman drill presses work the same way? Is there a crossover part?

Hmmm.... that sequence of parts doesn't look right to me. I've never seen that thin portion on that bushing either.

Check these posts for comparison:

Sorry for the late reply. I wss a Tapatalk user who was unaware support was ending. I just thought no one was replying to my threads!

So you're right, the fiber washer doesn't go in that location in the stack. Though I can't find another explanation, it seems impossible that the bronze bushing was simply worn down and it created that hollowed out portion right? In any case, I found someone who wanted to inherit the project and sold the DP yesterday.

I really need a floor standing model and something beefier to boot. Back to searching...

Thanks for the help!
