Saw one on C.L. today, looked like good quality in the picture. Anyone know anything about them ? The add said it was a 3 1/2 inch vise that opened 5 inchs. Guy wanted 45 bucks for it. What do you guys think ?

Dunlap was an economy brand of Sears that replaced the Companion brand sometime around 1940. It was a less expensive alternative to the better quality Craftsman label. Dunlap tools were generally of similar quality as Craftsman, but made with slightly lesser materials or manufacturing processes, or a simplified design. that allowed them to be made and sold cheaper. By today's standards, they are well built.

Without seeing a picture of the condition of the vise I couldn't comment on the price, but it seems a little high unless it's in pristine condition.

Thanks for the info, guess I'll pass. I have a 6 inch Columbian that I use that's in great shape but I have 2 benches and if I ran across a nice old vise at a reasonable price I'd probably jump on it.

Crab: Jake is right on with his comments and we all need to see a picture of the vise you are asking about or a Craigslist link if you want to risk it.

also note that Dunlap had Rock Island make their vises for a time in the late 20's early 30's that are even better quality than the ones 10-30 years later.

I'd save your money and buy a 4 to 5 inch Reed, Prentiss, Parker, Rock Island or a Wilton bullet just to name a few of the better vises.
