I hit up an estate sale yesterday as it was about over. The guy running it was desperate to get rid of stuff so he didn't have to move it back to storage. I showed a little too much interest in this old tool box full of antique engine rebuilding tools and he made me take it home for $15.

There is a collection of a dozen or more valve seat cutters? Two tools for lapping in valves, four or five flathead valve spring compressors, an adjustable ridge reamer, and several things that baffle me.

First, what is the vintage of the box and tools, second, what are the adjustable calipers and aluminum handle with a knob for?

There were a few of these cupped things with internal teeth that I've never seen. All are with extensions that look like they were made for an old bit and brace, and most of the extensions are bent to the same angle.

That looks like an outside caliper of some kind and there's probably a good brand name on it.

Those brace bits are interesting. I wonder if somebody made them specially to wind gears?

The aluminium thing is for setting valve clearances, a socket goes on the square drive, the blade turn the adjuster screw in a rocker arm, the oscillating thing is for grinding valves in, a sucker goes on the end to grab the top of the valve.

Excellent find! Those extensions with the splined cups are to drive some type of ball shaped cutter, like used to cut faucet type valve seats.
Love cantilever toolboxes, and that Duplex is way cool!

I collect the old valve seat cutters. Sometimes I don’t know why, but I have a bunch of them.
If you want to part with those, let me know

It’s even got the name and patent cast on it, just be careful googling that one.

There are multiple end attachments for the valve grinder, I see ones that look like they’d work on split nuts.
