Those were old when I entered the work force around 1970. Most chain blocks had tin cowls on them by then. Yale is still in business today and chain blocks from the early 1900's were YALE & TOWNE MFG. so a clue would be when they changed their name to just Yale. I'd guess it's from the 40's - 60's but that's guessing.
If there's no broken parts or the bushings aren't totally wore out it should be quite useable. These kinds of tools were often overloaded beyond their capacities so you see a lot of them busted up. Yours looks good though. Both hooks have to have clips on the mouth today to prevent them from slipping off when slack but you can wire the top one. They used to sell safety clasp kits for hooks, don't know if they are still available.

The hook latches were an OSHA thing. The latch kits were garbage that didn't last very long before they broke. That block is so heavy that you'd never jar it off the trolley on an A frame. It'll be slow going, though. Half the speed of a one ton hoist.

It weights about 150-200 pounds. Top hook is slightly deformed but i just used it to lift about 3000 pounds and its rated for 2 tons. As you may tell i replaced a few questionable bolts. Guess its good to go ill just stay clear of the unsupported load. Got to be older than '44,dad said he had it before he left for WWII. Funny ive never seen it, been hiding in the back since before i was born i guess

I'm not sure if the hook is deformed. It might be a type called a foundry hook, which typically has a wide, deformed look. I've seen a few on some old ratchet chain hoists. If it's rated for 2 tons, it can probably at least 4 before failing, maybe even more. Hard to see in the pic, but if it's deformed I'd imagine whatever is stamed onto it might be twisted or deformed also..
