My local contruction material recycling place just got a load of black epoxy resin lab tops that they're selling for cheap. I know as a solid surface its fairly infinitely re-surfaceable and very strong, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried using this stuff as a benchtop in their garage? Does it just get scratched to hell and back and look like garbage eventually or is this actually a pretty good idea?

If it will stand up to use in a high school Chemistry Lab, is should be fine in a garage. Black would be, in my opinion, a poor color choice.

High school chemistry labs dont typically use ball-peen hammers and the like. Thats my chief concern.

I've got one in my shop. Works great, but I use it for chemicals! Just like it was designed for.

So far no problems with various propellants and binders. This probably isn't very helpful though.

Beware of asbestos in those table tops...getting rid of it later may be a headache should you change your mind.

Chances are the ones with asbestos aren't showing up at the recycling places. I have a friend who was a facilties manager at a local college; when they remodeled the chemistry lab I was able to get some nice base cabinets, but all the counter tops had to go to a landfill.

I have one on my workbench and love it. it also was pulled from a high school in the area. Quick wipe down with a standard cleaner and it still looks brand new. I've beat on it, covered it in grease, chemicals, you name it....thing is un-destructible. Just wish I could get my hands on more at a cheap price to build a larger work area. Buy them all if the price it right, maybe next time i'm in PA i'll take the excess off your hands
