Duralast ratchet bait and switch with inside pics

Ok both of these are duralast 3/8 ratchets with the teardrop design. The one on the left is a single ratchet, it's a flex head though, only one I had in store today, the right one is a duralast 3/8 out of a socket set, supposed to be same part

Duralast is an auto zone brand that buys from the cheapest bidder. I would be willing to bet that if you were to buy every duralast product today, one year from now almost all of them would be different. It's the nature of the beast...

The item is mostly the same externally and fills the same place in the catalog, a 3/8" ratchet. That is why the item number is the same.
It does not mean it is an identical item to the smallest detail.

Plomb parts numbers have been recycled from the late 30's to the present day new production with changes in details, finish and materials. But a 1/2" combo wrench by Plomb, Proto, ProtoMex, Urrea or Surtek will all bear the same number.

I do beleive AZ is doing exactly the same thing. They could have 4 different manufacturers making a very similar item at the same time to fill orders for the stores. Isn't that what really matters to them?

To the OP. Yes the ratchets are different. Rebuild kits will be a problem. But they don't cost SO prices. This is marketing in the 21st century. It ***** but it won't change unless we refuse to by foreign made tools. The bean counters are in control and their shortsightedness will be part of the demise in US manufacturing.

the only ratchets that are like that come in the socket sets sold in stores. The single ratchets and ratchet sets sold online and in store are all old duralast.


I'm a huge fan of the duralast ratchets and generally enjoy a Duralast thread, but this topic has been talked about many many times. Ive personally explained the duralast ratchets 20+ times now. At least once in every duralast thread, including one just yesterday.

A search for "duralast" will make you an expert within 2 threads

I blew up my flex head Duralast like those by just pulling hard on it. Didn't even think about getting another.

The handle made a really nice 3/8" breaker bar. Something good about them at least.

I was gonna buy the kit, but I ended up getting the 1/4 3/8, 3/8 flex and half individually , they are nice ratchets

Oh hell. Not this again.

I own Snap On, Mac, Matco, Cornwell, and just about every other high quality ratchet you can imagine, including somewhat obscure brands like Stahlwille and Hazet.

And I still consider the old-type Duralast ratchets to be well built and well finished.
