Can you show me where and what law specifically, makes English the national language?
Last I knew German was almost voted the national language, but that was a long time ago.

I recently took my citizenship exam and oath. While one can skate through, they verified that I was able to speak English, answer questions about the framework and history of the country, then the requirement is another set of interviews just before the oath, then reciting the oath. At the least, this applies for those being naturalized.

Like so many government requirements, if you couldn't speak English, then to give you a fair test, they would be required to provide you with something you could understand (German perhaps). I see this with local government health inspectors, and Chinese restaurants.

Sigh research shows that English has been adopted by 30 States as their official language.

I believe Missouri, is recently among them. A good FIRST step, but not Federal, and depending on how the law is written, may not affect schools (special needs exemptions) and such.

Some first generation Italian, got in big legal trouble for posting a sign in his restaurant in New York that said something like "This is America, please place your order in English!" Thats how it should be....(not that he got in trouble, that part makes me puke)

Based on some of the replies to this thread
maybe we should just send all these immigrants back to where they came from....maybe whoever has parents or grandparents or great-grandparents who were not US-born??? Or should we go back a bit farther????

BTW, Rig, why did you write this? It is hyperbole, and not justified. There is not one post in this thread that even comes close to suggesting what you wrote.

My post above this pretty much sums that up. Most people were proud to come here and be american and did their best to fit in. Now with all this democratic BS you end up in jail for telling someone in your own business that they need to speak english if they want to eat.

My grandfather traced us back to the 1620's here. SO they weren't born in the US, as their was NO US, to be born in.

All great civilizations have failed, and we are on the brink. Economically, ethically, morally, and just about every other "lly" you can come up with. Soon there will be 3 north american states if we last that long, mexico, canada, and america. The next currency is already minted for the emminent collapse of the dollar, do you have any Ameros yet?

Please, we're not even close yet. Go to Berlin, as well as several other cities in Germany. We're not that far gone with social problems yet. Spend some time outside the US and you might learn to appreciate it a bit more. Every country is greener...until you actually live there.

I speak Spanish and English fluently. I was born in the U.S. and my skin is very fair. My mother is South American, Spanish, Colombian - whatever you want to call it. Her entire side of the family immigrated from S. America and all of them have been naturalized U.S. citizens for many years - one is a marine, another a physician, another works for the government. My father is from Pennsylvania - as was his father (the president of PNC bank) and grandfather. None of the Hispanics in my family would take offense to being called Spanish or Latino - that's ridiculous. Now, once you start mixing up their country of origin, continuously, that begins to become offensive. It's akin to a New Yorker being mistaken for a New Jerseyan.

Recently, I have noticed at my local AutoZone, which I've frequented for about 2 years now, a hiring of multiple Latin-Americans. I find it a bit tedious trying to decipher what the newer employees are trying to say in English. However, I do see the enormous benefit to those that solely speak Spanish. As aforementioned, it is probably due to the low wages offered for these positions. Hiring a bilingual person is expensive. Hiring a 'closet' bilingual person (meaning no noticeable Spanish accent) would be doubly expensive. I too think it's bull to prosecute someone for their business decisions. It is THEIR business, if customers are offended by their rules, don't shop there. We are too oversensitized now and everyone is so concerned about political correctness that we're all a bunch of wussies now. Maybe that's why we enjoy reading about and discussing tools so much!

To solve the wage dilemma, it seems this particular AutoZone has promoted most of its experienced employees to the position of 'Parts Service Manager', as opposed to the normal 'Parts Representative'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back on topic - I've bought several of the chrome DuraLast sockets from AutoZone. For my purposes, they have held up just as well as my Craftsman ones. However, I bought a Great Neck GM oil pressure sensor socket that I had to Dremel down to fit properly. My Great Neck distributor wrench set has been handy the limited times I've used it.

This AutoZone, and the 2 neighboring ones, still have an entire aisle of DuraLast and Great Neck tools. I even bought my first jack stands and low-profile aluminum jack there (same as the HF one BTW). My most recent DuraLast tool purchase was for a rear pinion nut socket. During checkout, one of the employees I've known for a while now recommended I buy the Great Neck version, as both brands carry lifetime warranties. I spent the extra 50 cents for the SAE and metric color band feature of the DuraLast version.

Edit: I started out this post with the sole intention of reminding you all this is the 'General Tool Discussion' section. 5 minutes later, I've written a freakin' novel! Oops.

I wasn't comparing the US to anyone, just the fact that we have strayed incredibly far and are increasing speed rapidly towards the drop off. While the people are hypnotized by the media and think everything will be better soon.

I have one. I bought a #2 screwdriver, to replace my truck one that was wore out (throwaway tools in it, due to break-ins). Their "lifetime" warranty was listed as 75 years on the receipt (not exactly lifetime).

Is it me, or do the Duralast screwdrivers look and feel quite similar to Gearwrench screwdrivers?

Have you tried to exchange your #2 yet? Did they hassle you?

No, it has only been used twice and still is in good shape. I normally can use my regular screwdrivers, or ones where I am at (let them provide their tools and I will help). I was just disappointed by their "lifetime" being considered as 75 years.

Responding to the original question- I was at my local AutoZone for some basic off the shelf stuff. Anyway, I noticed their Duralast tool section is there the same as it's always been.

I never had any luck with the Duralast stuff. It always seemed to fail at the 5th or 6th use.

But a lot of the old timers on here know my skill at breaking 10mm tools.

I use a couple duralast sockets, but it was with the intention of grinding them down and shaping them to avoid buying a $70 special socket. 10 minutes and a Dremel later, all was ok. I think I paid $3 for the socket.

i did some time as a manager for autozone last year. and i have nothing great to say about the quality of employees they hire.

hints:
go during the day when the more professional people are working the counter.
if possible, get to know the commercial sales guy, they usually know there stuff.
when you find good employees, let them know it, and use them whenever possible. Let someone else go in front of you and wait for the "good guy" but make sure they are weraring a grey shirt, they have management powers.

a lot of things are up to the manager, they actually have a lot of leeway. I told a lot of jerks i couldnt do things i could do. and i helped out some really good people (and cute girls)

There was a study in about 2006 that revealed Autozone is the nation's #1 employer of ex-cons.

How about a link to the study you are referencing? I have worked for AZ for 10 years and you are way out of line. Background checks are standard everywhere and have been for a long time.
