I just picked up one of these and I know I've seen the fastener it fits...somewhere...at some point. Any ideas since this thread started in 2013?

I could sure use one of those if it was a 1/4 inch across the flats. I have a 1/4 inch combination wrench with the jaws of the open end spread out because I was using it on something that a 1/4 inch combination wrench wasn't designed for. But a 1/4 inch double D socket would be perfect.

Wamsutta:
You might consider finding an older Billings or Williams (or possibly Bridgeport) open-end with a 1/4" opening.

Head thickness might be a wee bit more substantial than modern-day production stuff.
(Might be pure speculation on my part as well, but my Bridgeport "Hy-Power" lobster claw set is pretty beefy.)

Thanks for the information! I wouldn't have guessed carb jets. I was picturing something that would hold the threaded end of a bolt while tightening a nut, like on a strut. (Thanks for helping me remember that, ChrisLS8!)

It measures 3/8" between the flat sides.

It reads:

4549
-Duro-
Chrome
U.S.A.

I also found it in an HVAC tool kit, but it may have other uses as well...

I am a bit late to the party, but I am going through a Bonney RF81 28 piece refrigeration set, and it has an RF67 double D with the same dimensions (3/8 and 1/2) as the Duro-Chrome 4549. The Bonney catalog C-1 (1947), page 87 describes the RF67 as a Kerotest Valve Packing Nut Socket. An example of the packing nut is shown. I first thought that my Bonney set was a carburetor kit, but found out later that it was for refrigeration.
