I also bought this yesterday among other things. It doesn't work well-skips, binds etc. I can't figure out how to open it up. Any ideas?

Oh, there's no way in. Unless you want to use a cutting wheel, that is....

Why would they do that? How do you even lube this thing? Maybe a good ATF soak?

Mix 1/2 automatic ****** fluid with 1/2 Acetone in container-immerse head for a couple weeks-give it a try-no workee-use for a door stop-otherwise if it works, I send you a repair bill!:shocking:

An ATF soak is the only way without destroying the ratchet.

The sides are rolled over the plate when manufactured.

Don't give up all hope yet; if it's just real dirty in there, the ATF soak will restore proper function. If something is broken, well then you are SOL.

As for how to oil it normally, there is a tiny oil hole on the back side of the cover plate.

OK, I'll do the ATF soak. I wonder if anyone has cut one of these open. Have the insides ever been seen except by the factory workers that assembled them?

I found one in a lot of ratchets I purchased a while back. Someone had cut it open and then brazed it back together. I think I sold it to John/galaxie.

Now that is cool. So you cut it open and you find a broken part. If it was never meant to be opened then there should hve never been a rebuild kit for the thing. I guess you could cut two open and mix and match parts to get one good one. Or, it shares the same guts as some other ratchet. Overall, it's not worth the effort. It'll get an ATF soak and if that works then great. If not, then lesson learned.

I had a similar problem with this one. It was rusted solid, wouldn't move a bit. Good only as a doorstop really. Submerged in white vinegar for couple of hrs, Work back n forth till it moved a bit rinsed thoroughly, and blasted with wd-40. I kept kept working it back n forth till it moved.
Now its a fine useable ratchet.

Absolutely. It doesnt sound like yours even needs Vinegar Stricht, I'd just use the oil or atf as others have said. Good luck !!

I just squirted some penetrating oil in the lube hole and it now works perfectly! Wow was that simple.
