I'm looking for an inexpensive switch that will actually work for longer than one or two months. I've bought two different brands, one from HD and one from Lowes, they work for a couple of months then they won't shut off in daylight. I've checked to make sure insects haven't set up house and blocked the photocell. Any suggestions would be welcome.

If you mount them facing into the sun , they will burn up inside. aim the cell towards the north.

I dumped the photocell and got a honeywell programmable wall switch a couple of years ago and it is still working just fine. You program in your latitude and longitude so it knows when sunrise and sunset are to turn the lights on and off. you can also program it to tun off/on at specific times, and also have an offset time with either sunrise or sunset. I have mine set to come on at 20 minutes before sunset, and then go off at 3am. The only caviot is you have to have a neutral wire in the box where the switch is going to go.
