Dust collecting system

Start to think about set up a dust collector system for my woodworking tools. Wondering who here has set one up and what types of tips they can provide me.

My main lines are going to 4'' pvc piping that will be dropped down to 2'' for some smaller tools. I need it to be a compact system as the garage is used for other purposes as well.

Any pics of other setups would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I built one of these http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/cy.htm and hooked up a Harbor Freight 2hp Dust collector unit behind it. It handles my table saw, router table, chop saw, band saw and stationary belt sander/spindle sander combination no problem. I run all 4" PVC (Sewer and drain pipe) with blast gates at each machine and have excellent dust control.

The Harbor Freight 2 hp unit is the best value (and the quality is there) of any of the DC units out right now, I paid $229.00 for mine and am pleased with the unit. They are going on sale in March for $139.00 with a coupon out of one of the national Woodworking magazines, I forget which one at the moment.

I have the HF mini collector and it works great. I'm using one flex duct and taking it form machine to machine right now. If you're using 4" PVC you may want to consider running a bare copper "drain" wire attached to the pipe with zip ties the whole length of the piping and attaching that wire to a good ground. The plastic pipe can build up a nasty amount of static electricity and if it arcs, it could possibly ignite the dust.

I've been thinking about one for a lot of metal, particular cast iron grinding I've been doing. Maybe I should check out some of the HF stuff... I also read through parts of the Bill Pentz website and found it informative.

No prob. T. That Thein Cyclone works like a champ, it's simple and inexpensive to build and catches almost all of the dust and shavings. If you build one you won't be disappointed.

Wow thanks for all the information. I love the idea in that link for use Al tape to ground the system. Very interesting stuff.

That was some horrible spelling and grammer in my first post!! Its was a long day at work and spent alot of time looking at cataloges on dust collectors. lol The brain was offically shut off for the day.
