Just want to put the question out there about Dust Collection and what you have in your garage. Single stage , or two stage?
Money and space are my issues, efficient but not cheap .

Imo, its worthwhile to go with something like a 2hp dust collector if you have stationary tools.

Or, just do your woodworking (dust generating) projects outside is always going to be easier with portable power tools (up to a point where a bunch of stationary tools have to be dragged out there)

I typically roll my saw out in the driveway, and have another cart with a good top to work out their too...

I've been using a shop vac with one of the yellow high-efficiency bags, it works very well sucking up fine sawdust. I recently bought a Dust Deputy for $5 at an estate sale so I plan on hooking that up in-line to let it fill up with sawdust instead of my shopvac bag...

I use a 2hp dust collector with 4" corrugated plastic hose with a grounding wire wrapped around each hose going to each woodworking machine. It does a good job. I have a cyclone collector (33 gallon trash can) to collect the larger pieces before they enter the dust collection bag attached to the collector. I collect from 3 hp table saw, 10" radial arm saw, 16" band saw, 8" jointer, 12" lathe, 12" planer, 12 speed drill press, oscillating spindle sander, 9" disc sander with 6" belt sander, and misc. routers. I use blast gates at each tool. The 2hp can collect (adequately) from two machines running simultaneously. The farthest run is about 20 ft.

I have more questions than answers.
Cyclone. Once you do you won't go back to anything else. No matter how many tools you have or run at one time. Even if you have to make or buy the lid for a garbage can. You can hang the vacuum and can from the wall, inside or outside your shop.

The larger the pipe you can run the more efficient your system will be. The longer the runs the bigger the unit you will need and the larger the pipe needed.

Shop vacuums while some use them are not the correct tool for the job. They would never keep up with my planner.

I have 3 different systems for different needs. The main is a PSI wall mount cyclone is run of the blast gates and does most the work. My double bag is used for my tools that are past my ducting. I use Christmas lights remote for power control. This was my first system and adding the garbage can cyclone helped with the efficiency and I could just swap garbage cans if I was on a run. My little delta portable is taken to jobsites with a small cyclone garbage can. The unit would turn on and off with the tool which was nice until it quit working, know I use the Christmas lights remote.

3 different systems for 3 different needs. As mentioned your needs may vary, so what are your needs?

what are your tools, your needs? this could go in almost any direction. whats the budget?

Currently I am running a 10 unisaw circa 1988(modified 4 inch dust port), a 14 inch Rikon Band Saw Circa 2016 and a Milwaukee compound miter saw 12 inch. These create a whole lot of fine dust. The near future plan to buy a 6 inch joiner and small 10 inch planer. I live in a shameful townhouse , wish I could just move my tools outside.
My thoughts first choice single stage ;https://www.canadianwoodworker.com/webstore/wecs.php?store=wood&action=display&target=CWI-DCP005H
Or Jet 1.5 hp but puts it out of my budget http://www.rockler.com/jet-1-1-2hp-cyclone-dust-collector

I have a single stage from rockler that hangs on the wall and the Jet air filtration system. The Jet hangs from the ceiling. Or you can put it on the ground if you want. They had good Black Friday deals on the Jet unit. I only run one piece of equipment at a time. I’m going to get a nice filtration mask too. Wasn’t too worried about it when I was younger but I don’t care to breathe a bunch of dust anymore.

The first one is some clever writing calling it cyclonic.
Put a garbage can or something else in front of it if that's what your looking at. Your Hepa filter will last much longer. The big and much of the fines will never make it to the bag or filter.

For short one tool runs that should work.

Have you checked any of the CL type of sites? I've seen some great deals.

Have you looked at the Harbor Freight 2hp dust collector? It's a bargain at $190 or less, but you might have to mod it in order to get it up to the level of more expensive models. Link to 2hp dust collector

We have a 1.5HP Jet single stage with the filter. It is going to be dismantled and converted to a cyclone shortly using a one-piece molded plastic cyclone. Our 16'x 22' shop area is plumbed with 4" PVC. The single stage 1.5HP is really best suited to a direct connection to a single machine, it is just adequate plumbed to all the machines that ring a room. Would prefer a 5HP cyclone with 6"" plumbing, but not in the cards presently. It is also overkill for the small area we have for wood working presently. Also have two air filters hanging from the ceiling two help scrub the air.

"We have a 1.5HP Jet single stage with the filter. It is going to be dismantled and converted to a cyclone shortly using a one-piece molded plastic cyclone"

Same unit, I converted mine using the older steel cyclone, they're now white instead of blue - I'm limited ATM to 30 amp 240, so the smaller cyclone lets me use my powermatic saw (or planer, or jointer, or band saw, or routers, etc) AND the DC that way.

4" pvc, no 90's, as little flex hose as possible, etc, and it works. I'd also prefer at least 6" and 3 horse, but need a separate shop for metal work MORE, so "LABTYD" (Life'sABitchThenYouDie :=)

I built the stand so the black foot pedal LOWERS the barrel just enough to clear the lid - there are stops behind the barrel, so once it's emptied I just push the barrel back til it stops and step on the pedal. Gives just enough lift to slightly crush the foam tape lid seal - Done.

For now, in the interest of flexible use, NOTHING hangs down far enough to hit my head when tools are disconnected and rolled out of the way... Steve
