Dust Collector Recommendations

I'm going to need to upgrade my dust collector soon. I've used a roll-around Delta collector with a 30 gallon fiber drum for almost 30 years and it did a good job keeping up with my 13" Delta planer and the other tools in my woodshop.

Recently, I purchased an older Powermatic 221 20", 10hp planer and the dust collector isn't going to keep up with this machine.

I'm out of date regarding dust collection equipment, so need to know what brands to consider and also the best way to size the collector to ensure that what I get is large enough, but not larger than I need.

In addition to the planer, I'll have an 8" jointer, shaper, unisaw, bandsaw and belt sander in the shop which will also be connected to the dust collector. I will also have a stand alone dust filter/collector mounted above the finishing area to collect some of the smaller airborne dust particles.

Upgrade that delta to a dual stage by adding a cyclone type onto it ?

and update a filter

if you are adventurous there are some that update the fan blade as well, on the HF unit, , not sure whats available on your Delta.... Motor is motor 2HP is 2HP...



I got a HF unit off Craigslist from a wood worker... he have this filter on as update. Pretty sure there are other brands.

I have had the Grizzly 2HP cyclone for over 10 years in my shop. I have no problems recommending it. Back then, I grew tired of single stage dust collection and clogged filters. The separation on my Grizzly cyclone is outstanding even with machines like wide drum/belt sander that create tons of fine particles.

With all that being said dust collectors can often be had relatively cheap on the used market so you might keep an eye on CL.

I have a old grizzly 3hp 4 bagger hooked to a shop made cyclone it can handle the 20 inch planer and one more 4 inch duct at the same time.

A cyclone would be my first upgrade. My Dewalt 12” can fill the bag in a hurry, can’t image the havoc a 10hp would do. Get the chips out somewhere easy, leave the dust for the bag.

Here is mine...works great.

That would fill up in 10 mins with a planer.

I've filled several 350 gallon super sacks from a few hours of planning
