Dust magnets

Does anyone else have a problem with their tool chests being like dust magnets? Maybe it's the humidity here in texas, or maybe it's the powder coating? But I try and keep my workspace clean and wipe down my tool chest when i notice it getting dirty, but it seems like by the time i'm finished cleaning it, it's dusty again.

Static buildup? Too OCD? what say you?

Work in a bodyshop and you will go nuts with dust! I live up a dirt road so I can wipe everything down and close the shop up for a few days and when I come back everything's covered. You just learn to live with it.

Hell, I can WAX my box spotless, and in 2 hours see a film. Live by a scrap yard.

Yep....dust over all of mine. Wipe them off and dusty an hour later. But we live in the country, and have a plowed field right behind us, plus the wind blows almost constantly around here.

One aspect of a garage that seems to promote this is an unsealed concrete floor. You can wash it, vac it, and q-tip it clean but it will generate dust an hour later. It is one of the upsides to sealing it...

hopefully after i get my race deck installed it won't be as big of a problem, since it will create a barrier between the raw concrete and the rest of my stuff.

or i'll just have a $1200 floor covered in the same dust, in which case i'll check myself into a rubber room.

I have read that 80% of the dust in a house is tracked in from the garage, another 80% comes from dead skin cells, and the rest comes from various other sources.

I parked my recent-washed car at a hotel in Newport Beach, California and left it in there (outside, under the sky) for three days and two nights. After 3 days, I don't see any dust sitting on my car!!! I think Newport Beach's air is very clean!!

That must be because dust is known by the state of California, to cause cancer.

the place up wind from us makes roof trusses all day long so we are always getting saw dust in our shop. i pretty much gave up on keeping my kra clean as its covered 15 minutes later

I work on copiers, so, toner and dust are everywhere. The stretch n dust cloths by chicopee are awesome. You stretch the cloth to activate it and it is like a static charged cloth with dust polish in it. They last a long time and dust is attracted to them.

I parked my "just-washed" Bimmer (dark blue paint) at the hotel parking lot in Newport Beach, California and never moved it for about two days. After two days, there is NO FILM of DUST on my car!!! I was shocked. I think the air near the beach is a lot cleaner than inland valleys.

I live in inland valleys...ohh, I hate dust. It's everywhere. I really want the City to set up a new ordinance - no leaf blower!! It kicks up too much dust and the wind carries over a great distance, spreading over somewhere. All of my cars always get a layer of dust - especially several hours after I washed them.

As I see it there are two basic choices: live with the dust or use covers that are going to require extra effort for usage. Things stored inside a structure can be made relatively dust free by pressurized air through a filter, like an air conditioning system. Positive air pressure will not admit dust particles.
