Rolls,
I am in a similar boat. I have one section of the shop sectioned off for wood work tools and for the most part have that dust handeled with point of use vac and an exhaust fan just for that room.
My main part of the shop sees everything from the 4" grinder to a sand blast cabinet to all sorts of drilling and even a little milling now and then. This type of "mess" does not bode well as the chips do not like to fall in a nice little pile like wood chips off a table saw. Grinding mess goes everywhere. I am thinking of some sort of portable curtain like a welding curtain to at least direct the chips/debris into and not send them into every nook and cranie of the shop.
One thing I fortunate to have is a future space in the shop that I am trying to get finished which will be the dirty area. Stationary grinder wheel will go in there as well as the blast cabinet and a small paint area. Like you outside is not a good option but it is amazing how quickly a nice clean shop gets hacked up when the metal starts to fly..
