Earthquake !

I woke up this morning at 530 to the whole house shaking and my 3 yr old daughter crying .There was a 5.4 earthquake centered in Olney Ill thats about 1/2 way between Indy and St Louis . Im in Bloomington Indiana Thats an hour south of Indy .If this is what its like living in Cali I dont think Ill ever be going out that way

Everything shook around here this morning too. I didn't like it at all.

I'm about 50-60 miles northwest of you in the Terre Haute area.

Just for some perspective, I looked up all of the magnitude 6.4 or greater quakes in California since 1960. I would have looked up magnitude 5.4 quakes or greater, but I could not find any listing online. A magnitude 6.4 quake is 10 times the energy of the 5.4 quake in Indiana this morning. I found 11 total, 8 in the north and 3 in the south.

I expect I could not find a listing of quakes with less than 6.0 magnitude because the list would be too long.

Sorry, Chad, that's nothing like living in California.

My family was woken by this earthquake this morning also.

We live in Morenci Michigan about 375 from the epicenter and were all sound asleep before our beds and other items started to shake.

My girls are very excited as they have never felt an earthquake before. They are 12 & 13 and will talk about this for the rest of their lives.

Pretty cool, I love it when kids get excited about Science, no matter how it is wound into our lives.

I live like 30 mins North of Indy and I woke up about 5:30 like everyone else but I thought I was dreaming. It sounded like it was raining outside but I think it was the glass wear inside a cabinet in the other room moving around. And my bed felt like it was moving back and forth. I said fug it and fell back asleep cause I thought I was still half asleep dreaming. Woke up this morning and news say we had an earthquake. I was like ****.

The crazies aren't socialists -- they are just idealogue income redistributionists who prefer true high tax rates and social welfare as a matter of ideological dogma. except, of course, for the denizens of the People's Republic of Berkeley or the Democratic Socialist Republic of Santa Cruz.

But then again I've never figured out why anyone would voluntarily live in Tornado Alley or in the path of Hurricanes in the SouthEast... I just figured they were all in the Federal Witness Relocation Program

(If we moved there, cost of living goes down, but income would only be the square root of income in Cali)

Me too. Some people say they felt it in the Chi-town area! I felt 2 quakes while living in LA....enough for me.

Do not move to California...we have earthquakes at least once a week, everything has to be bolted down or it will fall or move or crush you. We have horrible weather, highest crime in the US, and taxes and fees for everything. Any thing less then 6.0 out here does not even get reported on the news, because they are so frequent. The seismic codes for building increase the cost of construction to be all most cost prohibited

I'm in NE Indiana (Ft Wayne) and felt it rumble up here.. I heard the "art" above my bed banging around and my wife felt the bed move. Thought it was kinda neat to feel an earthquake, but only because they are so rare here.

I'll take our tornado's and snow over regular earthquakes anyday though.

Plus, you don't want to be exposed to the extremely toxic smog levels we have here... it's pretty much like China here. Gas masks everywhere... you can't go outside without one. California is over-rated anyway... stay FAR away from here.

Going through one at 7.4 and another at 7.2 when we were on our honeymoon in Hawaii a couple of years ago was enough.

I went to SIU Carbondale in the late 60s, not too far from Olney. There was an earthquake of about the same magnitude back then. I was in the shower when it hit, and that was pretty freaky.

As a suggestion to all our friends in this morning's Illinois-Indiana earthquake fault zone, this would be a good weekend to earthquake strap your hot water heaters and vertical air compressors. A few years back we had a 5+ earth- quake centered about three miles from our home. The only damage in the area was one house which burned literally to the ground when the HW heater overturned and broke the gas line.

Remember, this quake is not really that far north of the New Madrid seismic zone, and I'd suspect that faults extend well into the areas north and south of the NMSZ.

The New Madrid quake of Dec 16, 1811 and two more, one in Jan and one in Feb of 1812 all were about 8.0+ and there were up to 2000 quakes in the area following this. These were the most powerful earthquakes to ever be recorded in North America.

Hard to say that long ago ... some online sources claim 9.2 for the 1964 Alaska quake, some claim 8.6. I've read the Alaska quake was the strongest in recorded history.

If you can find pictures from the Life issue showing the damage from that quake, they are amazing.

Richter 9.2 is 6310 times the energy of 5.4 ...

New Madrid was a big quake though - no question.

I felt the quake down in southwest ohio. It only lasted about 10-15 seconds. I though my wife was crawling on the bed to mess with the alarm clock, but the water was running so I knew she was in the shower. Hmm, so I rolled over and went back to sleep. When I got to work they asked me if I felt the quake. Ohh... that's what that was this morning .

As someone who grew up in NY, and has lived in CA the last 11 years, With all of CA's various problems, I still wouldn't ever move back. Most of California is not affected by earthquakes, I live in the Central Valley where even minor ones are quite rare.

On the flip side, I was born, raised, and lived in CA for more than 25 years.

Then I moved to Idaho, with more reasons to "move to Idaho" than "leave California". Idaho simply offered more for MUCH less. If wasnt that I didnt like CA, I just like Idaho more. The change of pace, inexpensive property and living expenses, and simple change of scenery was refreshing.

The earthquakes never bothered me. But now that I own my own home, it is nice to know I live in a place, one of the ONLY places in the US, that isnt known for ANY natural disasters
