Bought my first Easco ratchet today, model 731111 1/2 inch drive round head with the thumb wheel on it. Aside from marks on the reverse lever where someone smacked it with a hammer, it works just fine. I'm trying to figure out how to disassemble it for cleaning right now.

Does it look like one of these? Sears still has rebuild kits for them if you need one...

Looks just like those, the body is in good condition and it works just fine both directions, but there are marks and distortion on the reverse lever where there has been an impact of some sort.

I'm examining it now, and was struck by something...on one side of the head, it is polished almost all the way down to the shank, on the other side, it is only polished 1/2 way to the shank. I'm wondering why they bothered to polish that portion in the first place.

Billy, I'd like to get that part # from you. I'm also thinking that a pawn shop I frequent has a Craftsman on the shelf with the same thumbwheel...does that make an Easco-made ratchet, or do other Craftsman ratchets share that feature?

Good decision to buy that ratchet Dave. I don't have the 1/2 version but I know that those are nice. Whether it says Easco on it or Craftsman doesn't matter, but they will all have the exact same head on them. If it doesn't, it is probably a different style. Craftsman used to make a "tri-wing" model that had a thumbwheel, but I'm not positive that they came in 1/2 drive. The "tri-wing" model is definitely not the same thing as the round head fine tooth model.

I need a gut kit. I took it apart and part of the mechanism that holds the gearset is cracked and a chunk fell off...looks like a chunk of the narrow ridge that holds the circlip in place has come off. The head/shank is OK.

does the rebuild kit come with the back / goldish colored selector? (The piece with the quick-release button on it)

AFAIK, they are the same if you read the linked thread someone got the kit through Danaher directly or order through sears.
Those are pics from this thread; just linked for reference... http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14087&showall=1

I guess he posted the answer above; weird thing is, it doesn't come up in the sears.com parts page; maybe you should call the 800 number or catalog and see if they can get it for you.

This thing has a complex mechanism, lots of complex machine work went into making it.

I think that is the reason Sears does not market the double paw fine tooth ratchets more aggressively. The other Craftsman round head ratchets are very simple and must be far less labor intensive to produce. The double paw models are better tools but the average customer would not pay more for them.

I have a 3/8" Easco ratchet that needs a rebuild kit. I called Danaher customer service and received a rebuild kit for a teardrop ratchet. When I called back they said that the kit was discontinued and that was the replacement. I informed them that it was not the correct one and told them the part number of the KD tools version of the ratchet. They said it was not available and they sent me a new teardrop ratchet. The ratcheting mechanism is very sloppy. Even when compared to a 3/8" Craftsman teardrop ratchet it feels far inferior. I even replaced the guts with the one from the rebuild kit I received and it was exactly the same.

Anyy one have any Ideal what a Easco 72 1107 is equivalent to? It is a 3/8 drive round head with a flat handle that is really comfortable to me.

It was a first pick ratchet for years until it broke.

I have the exact same ratchet, mentioned in this thread:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14087&page=11&highlight=easco

It recently stopped turning the other direction, yet I am not sure it is broke (I think just jambed). What do people use to get the spring/ring off to remove the guts? I haven't found something thin enough yet.

I just use either a small screwdriver or some needle nose pliers. It is definitely a little tricky since the speeder wheel is partially blocking the clip.

On my 1/2 inch, I just used needle nose pliers, and the whole thing just sorta fell out. Getting it back together was more interesting, the spring clip got loose once and went under the fridge.

A FYI for every one NEVER try to take this style of ratchet apart out doors! I have a picnic table outside of the shop that I use to work on items on warm days.

Trying to work on these ratchets has led to many fun hours with metal detectors and kids crawling searching through the grass.

Jesus, this is getting silly. It was so simple at the beginning, one little handbox with some Snap On and Craftsman tools, now I have a large rolling cab, several handboxes, several drawers in my desk at home full of miscellaneous accumulated tools, and if I logged the hours I spend on this forum I'd probably shoot myself.

I am now waiting patiently for the kids to fall asleep so I can disassemble the 72-1109 for cleaning and lubrication. The only place I have enough light is the kitchen and I don't want them under foot. The 24 inch extension is the longest 3/8 extension I have and it looks well made.

You might disassembly it in a container like a dish washing tub or someting; that way you don't lose any parts or get **** all over the kitchen table! :)

With a round head (atleast this type) its pretty hard to lose parts. I would just take it apart on a paper towel, however the trick is putting it back to together. I bought a 1/4" one and spent 30 seconds disassembling and 45 minutes attempting to put the clip back in correctly.

That was the dirtiest ratchet guts I've ever seen. I have black goop under my fingernails,a black smudge on my shorts where a piece got loose and landed in my lap. Everything is intact, and I cleaned, lubed it and put it back together, but that clip dealt me fits. It works and feels just great now, but I'm not in a rush to take it apart ever again.

Luckily they usually last a long time between rebuilds. I still think the Marquis D' Sade designed that circlip.

Neat ratchet, nice action, but I'd much rather just remove 2 screws and disassemble a pearhead for cleaning. I see why people just dip the ratchet head in ATF and never take it apart.

There are some pearheads even harder to take aprt then these are.

I always thought Williams had the best ideal with the screw in covers

Those are my 3/8" ratchets. I do have a 1/2" and two 1/4" Easco ratchets as well. The middle one I use all the time. It is one of my "go to" ratchets in the garage.

I did not pay anything for them. They are all inherited.

I know a lot of people may not like that style, but they are very smooth and I personally like them.

Went to a Sears Hdwe store today, asked about a repair kit for the 73-1111, they gave me the number for the local parts depot. I went to a 2nd store, they looked on their cheat sheet, the ratchet repair guy groaned, because he said these are a PITA to get back together. He checked in his bin, they had 2 gut kits in stock, gave me one for nothing, said they had no bar code to ring it up on, so it was mine for the asking. It's bagged, with instructions and everything.
