I've been a long time reader but never really posted before. About two years ago I got layed off from the space industry. We had been wanting to get out of Houston for some time so I found a good job in Lufkin Tx. Then we started looking for property. We finaly found something we liked near Rusk TX. We are finally building. The first thing to go up will be the garage. We are building with cash so it will be a slow build. Here are some shots of the land.

We got the power hooked up and we just finished the slab yesterday. We will be living in the garage for a couple of years while we build the main house.

The garage is 26 x 52 with attic trusses that will give us a 19x52 room upstairs. We are planning on three bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Downstairs we will have a kitchen along the back wall and the rest will be open. I might put a laundry room type room in the corner. I'm framing the garage to be a four car garage later but will wall up the openings and put windows there. The garage doors will be 9' wide.

That gets you caught up. Right now I'm looking into what we want to put on top of the slab. I know stain and seal would be great but we are on a tight budget. I'm thinking about stain and maybe wax. I dunno.

thanks
Austin

off to a great start! The land looks nice, adding the garage will enhance the look as well. I have a small tract of land in East TX (32 acres) and I plan to build a shop/living quarters. I will check your progress... Enjoy your build and keep us posted.

My dad and two uncles retired from LI. I live on our family farm about a mile north of town on Hwy 59. Looks like you've got a nice place in Rusk.

That's my youngest brother. David, Joe and I are still here in town. Who is this and are you still in Lufkin?

Dablack, what do you do at LI?

I'm a design engineer in power transmission. That is my title at least. Really I deal with problems out in the shop and try to figure out ways to stop future problems. If I can't fix the problem, I find someone who can. More the latter than the former. It is a great job and I get to deal with just about everyone instead of sitting behind a desk all day.

About the garage, I just got a bid on getting water up there and it was going to be a little over $3/ft. We are 900 ft from the water at the road so that won't fly. I will be renting a trencher and doing it myself.

This weekend, we will be moving the RV to the property and mowing.

Slow progress

I've stained a few rooms and a patio but I've always used a waterbased sealer. Let me know how the wax works out. If you like the look, staining concrete is a cheap and simple way to dress up a slab. I got my stain at Contractor's Supply in Lufkin.

Thanks for the heads up on Contractor's supply. I will check them out later.

I've decided I'm going to focus on getting the house dried in before I work on the slab.

Got septic put in (aerobic system due to all the clay). Now I'm working on getting water up there. I've got about 1000' from the road to slab. Trenching is done, laying the 1.5" pipe is not. Once water is up there, it will be time to start framing.

Sorry it has been so long since I last posted. I mostly post over on countryplans.com. Here is where we are. I've got all the walls up and set the trusses myself during a three day weekend. I was crazy and I wasn't very good at it the first day at ALL! I finally got the hang of it toward the end of the second day and finish early on the 4th day of the three day weekend. The rental place picked up the sky trac about an hour after I was done. :rocker:

Since then I have been working on decking. Once I get plastic on the roof we will be to the point of plumbing and electric. This is a one man weekend build so it is going slow. Let me know what you think. Really, after plastic, it will be time to stain and seal the concrete.

thanks
Austin

Looking good so far. Is that going to be the primary residence for the family once you're done?

I've got family around Rusk and have spent alot of time up there, I love the area.
