I picked up some Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Plus (quart can to brush on) and some of their rattle can rust encapsulator. Any tips on how best to use these? I figured wire wheel to remove anything but tight and light rust, spray or wipe clean with acetone or similar to ensure no oil, then go to town with the encapsulator. This would be my first attempt with this type of product, using on frames, top and bottom of floor pans. Guy said a quart of brush on is ballpark good for a whole truck frame. AI figured rattle can might be useful for spot treatment, but not sure if it's a one time use or will be usable after sitting after the first use.

Good luck! I have never had any long term success by painting over rust. After MANY long years I have found out that ALL the rust must be removed and no magic "Bullet" will work. POR-15, Rust Bullet and dozens if not hundreds of other special products that claim to eliminate the worst part of the job which is removing the rust will all fail!

Yeah, "Rust encapsulator" sounds like snake oil. It's just marketing.

Remove all rust and a wire wheel is not good at that. Grinder and/or media blasting is what you want to use.

Not sure what OP is restoring.

Working on a Thunderbird and an older pickup, planning to try this stuff for floor pans inside and out, frame and subframe bits, etc. It's impractical for me to blast a frame or a whole unibody car, unfortunately. Small parts that fit in my cabinet get blasted to bare metal before any paint or assembly. Trying to do the best I can with time and space constraints.

I have Ospho and use that for a number of things, any time I'm under a vehicle and have things apart I usually wire wheel, Ospho, paint big stuff that I can't blast. It keeps rust at bay for a while. Maybe Ospho treatment after removing as much as I can with a wire wheel would be better prep before the encapsulator. I've read that POR15 specifically needs some rust to work and has poor adhesion to bare clean metal. Maybe this is not the case with Eastwood's products?
