For those who don't have a drill press or can't use a square on a round object to find the vertical line through the center of the bore.

Big Gator Drill and Tap Guides (Clamping not required for tap guide)

Also works for 90° holes into a flat surface or on the corner.

For smaller holes (but NOT letter-sized small), a cordless drill with a clutch makes quick work of tapping. You still need something to hold the tap straight, such as the tapping guide shown a few posts above.

Great videos! I sent the small engine winterizing to my father. He was in need of a tutorial and that one was perfect.

I'll only sit and watch a blank screen say "loading" for so long. Like 20 seconds. Easy tapping, so what. I never liked dancing much anyway.

Another way to do it is with a Gun or Spiral Tap. Turn the drill press on....then off and feed the tap into work piece. Finish off by hand if you need to.

A co worker will put the tap into a 8 point socket with a short extension. On the slowest setting he gets it started and taps away until he is almost through. He brings the drill press back up and the socket disconnects from tap and it no longer is tapping. I think it is a skill you need to refine but he is able to do it all the time with no problems. I have a 75% success rate.

Thanks for taking the time to produce the video.

For larger taps I have to break out the pipe wrench to turn the chuck.
Any tips for a tap larger than the press? I've a 7/8" by 18 that I always have trouble getting straight. Tapering the opening works, but not 100% of the time.

Can you post a picture of how the wheel fits over your hub?
