So I wanted to up grade to 200 amp service in our house. A good friend is an electrician and will be happy to advise. I got a permit and went to work. I have the panel and meter socket wired and ready to go. Called my buddy the electrician over, he stops in and says yep looks good to him. Called for an inspection. I made sure one of my sons (ages 19 and 17) would be home to let the inspector in and show him everything. The next day my oldest tells me the inspector was here he looked at the meter socket and the outside wiring, slapped on a sticker and said call for hook up. Never went into the house or asked to see anything else. I am ok with this because I had a journeyman electrician overseeing my project but is this how he inspects other jobs that may not have been? Just throwing it out there for conversation.

In my experience it can be a mixed bag. You get some who do their job and some who let others do their job.

If you are relying on the inspector to be assured of a propely done job, you are making a big mistake. IMO

When I read the OP, I expected it to go the other way- ive had it both ways and in the middle.

I recently posted about a similar experience running power out to my shop. I had one inspection for underground and rough-in. When I called for final, he never showed up. I checked on-line, and my final had passed! He never even came out to the property. They do know my work, though- I built and wired my entire house, and they like my work.

I had a rough in inspection for a 600 square foot addition in 2007. Inspector spent all of 15 seconds looking before he signed off. He said it looked like I knew what I was doing. He spent more time walking to/from his car than actually inspecting.

Could it be that the inspector knows the electricians work, and that in the past all of the electricians work has been up to code, so he figured this job would be the same even though the OP did the work himself and was advised by the electrician?

I know it does not excuse the inspector of doing a through job though.

It's like I constantly tell people. You want a architect-worker-contractor ? Ask the guys who inspect the final work.
They want to breeze through inspections and go home pat something on the *** for a three hour lunch and you don't want headaches and delays.
THATS how it's done.
