Easy wall stripe?

Ok, I will say upfront that my paint scheme is the ubiquitous white over gray with a stripe in between. I make no apologies, I am a living cliche.

Anyway, my walls are now painted and it's time for the stripe. I have about 150' of stripe to get up and what I want to do is a Shelby-style stripe (thin, thick, thin).

Does anyone know of a way to do this easily and hopefully cheaply without having to mask and roll three stripes over so much length? The side walls will have alot of visible stripe so getting them perfectly straight is an imperative.

I can't think of any other way than to tape and paint... here's a link to my garage, I painted, then taped over the stripe, then painted the black and red...

I agree...tape and paint. Make sure to paint over the tape to seal it to prevent bleed through. I just did about 180 feet of striping...hopefully I will never have to do that again.

If your walls are smooth, a sign shop could get you vinyl rolls in the width/color you want. It wouldn't work well if you used osb

I agree with copterdocter and 75shark. I just did this in my garage (just one thick stripe, though). It was my first time painting over the tape and then going back and painting the stripe. The edges are razor-like, I'm happy.

Did a stripe in mine a few weeks ago.
Tried the frog tape- waste of money. Still bleeds under the tape.
Blue tape & seal the tape edge w/ the color under the edge of tape. That way the bleed through is same color as wall. On mine- top was white, bottom was gray, stripe was blue. Top tape- sealed edge of tape white. Bottom tape sealed w/ gray. Then the blue went over that. I used a cheap throw away small roller. Pull tape when stripe is nearly dry to touch.

Make sure walls are dry. I would wait at least 4-5 days before masking off stripes. Otherwise tape will pull off base color.
That's as easy as it gets.

That is what I have always done. makes the lines striaght and fast to tape.

I forgot about the paint over the tape trick when I did mine. Slight bleed through but I can live with it!

For gymnasiums, a tape dispenser is used that dispenses two rolls of tape spaced apart to paint the lines on the floor. It looks quite simple and might be available without spending too much. It wouldn's be too hard to make a simple tool.
I have white over gray with a 6 inch red stripe separating them. I taped it manually and rolled on the red with good results.

I used a chalk line to make one line, then used tape to create the masking and the spacings. Peel off the spacers before you paint. It takes more tape this way, but it is very easy.

Paint your walls the color of your choice. Wait until the paint is cured, couple days/weeks whatever. Tape off the stripe design you want. Now here is where you are getting confused.....instead of painting the stripe area the color you want, paint the stripe edges with the color of the wall. This way the paint that seeps/bleeds under the edge of the tape will be the color of the wall. The edge of the tape will now be sealed and no other color paint will seep/bleed under the edge of the tape because it will be sealed with the wall color. Let it set up. Now paint the stripe the color you want. let it set up a bit and remove the tape.

Or just buy some vinyl tape in the color you want and stripe. Thecost will be slightly higher with the stripe tape but the work and clean up will be easy.

After painting two stripes in my garage, I'd vote for the vinyl stripe method. Little more $$, but it saves so much time and aggrivation, especially when the painters tape pulls off your fresh paint underneath because your garage walls have 35 years of "time" on them.

I painted my stripe on a concrete block wall, if you're concerned about a little bleed through on the edges....I used 1/4" striping tape, it hides the bleed and gives a contrast
