Easy welding cart build

Well seeing as I bought a new Hobart machine I needed something to roll it around on. I found some scraps from around my shop and put this together I think it turned out well.

First I started with this rolling base someone else had built at someone point four casters and angler iron frame. I hit it with some paint put the wood risers on it and the metal floor on the very end of the tank.

Next I had a metal 3 drawer filling cabinet it didn't have a top on it I assume it had a wood top at some point. I took some small angle iron built a frame then cut some 3/16 sheet to fill the inside in with for the top riveted it down and painted. after that I bolted it together.

Next I had a bottle cart and a strap I used the strap to hold the tank down and fitted it to the welding cart. Needed something to wrap the cords on next I had some gas valve knobs laying around used a few bolts and some conduit as a spacer sleeve. Boosh! new welding cart done didn't turn out bad for just stuff I had laying around a 2 hours of wasted time on the weekend. I like the filling cabinet the drawers are nice and deep so plenty of storage for all my gear

I like it, great use of "what you had laying around"!

It'd weld in a round tank base for that cart, just to prevent the tank from jostling around much. Maybe 2 inches tall, is all it needs.

i'd be pretty happy to use that! those drawers should certainly come in handy for storing consumables, clamps, pliers etc.

Good use of what you have. I would modify it and get rid of that baby bottle. They don't last very long and when you run out it will be on a weekend when the welding supply's are closed.

yea thats next is to up the size. I had a hobart 140 and used it on that it was fine for that

Looks like a quick 'n easy way to make a cart... and it serves the purpose just fine too.

well i guess my 220 outlet is on a pole in the middle of my shop area but the welder is the only thing that uses it

Yup, being on a pole would leave it in the way when its not in use.

I like it...using the end of a 'tanker' desk was a brilliant way to get drawers in there.

I like that too. Only thing I might add is a flat surface above the welder for quick little jobs. I use a copper sheet. But it looks like you've got ample table room there.

Dubbydoo I love it! I have the same welder and spent the last two weekends building this one out of stuff I had laying around as well:
(This is my FIRST Welding project sdont look too closely at my welds!)

Step 1: repurposed crappy file cabinet frame and glides


Step two - this is a cut down portion of an old table cart from work - cut down with a piece of angle (bed frame) in front - going to use this as the base. Welded four supports in place for the casters.


Some 1" tubing and bed frames - making a frame to encase the drawer. Hit the whole frame with Rustoleum "Hammered" black - I love this stuff.


Added more bed framing for welder support up top - checking the set on the cart frame. The reason the whole cart is offset (extinguisher side) is to provide an 6" footing on the right in case I eventually move to gas - then I have a support to tie the gas bottle to.


Checking set on the frame. Looks pretty good for my first project!


With the slides and drawer installed.

It occurred to me that the drawer was going to be too open to all kids of **** falling in, so I cut 1/2 plywood panels to fit the frame and clean up the look (and seal up the cart a bit).


Finally done. The cart handle is removable. Welded some bar stock in the back for cord wraps.

But I gotta say ckadam, that one thing I've never understood is angling the welder like you did.. Does it make that much of a difference? I've always had my welder flat and never considered having it any other way. Plus you get that much more storage underneath.

I guess I did that because everyone seems to do it - I don't have enough experience to know either way. It sits pretty low so I think it will help, but we'll see.
