FYI: compressor shopping.

We ask a lot of questions researching our tools and i see these questions come up a lot. So here is a few questions with the answers straight from the horses mouth.

There was an email to Eaton compressors asking about there units. The email shown below.

*********************************************************

Question:

#1 who makes this motor ? ( brand )
#2 where is the motor made?
#3 Where is the pump made?

Thanks.

Reply per Steve Derr <[email protected]>

The motor is an Eaton brand and is built in China, the pump is also built in China by the same ISO 9000 company that has been building pumps for us for years.
Thanks,
Steve

That's one thing that bugs me about Eaton. They're supposed to be great compressors, though.

Yeah, I had made up my mind that I would own an Eaton (name sounds good and they spec out nicely). I'm serious, I had decided and was ready to go. My buddy was doing the research (like all of us do) and I told him about the Eatons. He called to see if they'd make us a deal on two. Then he asked the questions you did......I watched ebay and craigslist and found a smokin' deal on a Belair.....I'm now glad I didn't go with an Eaton. Mainly because I got more air compressor with a bunch of goodies than I would have for the same money at Eaton....

I have an Eaton. So far it has been an excellent unit, runs everything great for me (paint guns, DAs, grinders, impacts, sandblaster, sandblast cabinet..... anything!!). I bought it almost a year ago and wish I had upgraded years ago, no problems so far, I change the oil once every 3 months, and drain the tank daily. Great compressor for the money!!

IIRC, on their website, they said that 1 out of every 1000 compressors are made in the US.

Also, just because something is made in China doesn't mean it's a crappy product.

At least Eaton will save money by not needing as many of the silly USA flag stickers they would plaster all over their compressors. ;)

For a while, their motors were made in the US. At least they are being honest about the COO of their components, unlike a few years ago.

I asked the same questions about six months ago and got the same answers. I didn't think they were trying to hide anything. There are horror stories of threats of lawsuits and people raving over awesome warranty replacements and customer service. I never noticed widespread complaints over compressor failures. Sure, one or two, but you could find that with Quincy or any other manufacturer. Had I not found an incredible deal on a Chicago Pneumatic Quiet compressor I would have bought one. The pump RPM is really slow on most of their units.

Since we are reviving this thread, I'll chime in.

I have had zero issues with mine, which is probably 5-6+ years old at this point, and their customer service seems to be top notch. While I don't use mine nearly close to a "professional" level, it came recommended to me by a friend who had purchased one of their gas units for their service truck.

My motor is a Square D brand made in Brazil, and all the other electrical stuff (mag starter etc) is Square D as well. All the ball valves appear to be high quality. About 2 years ago I replaced the tank drain ball valve as it developed a very minor leak, certainly not Eaton's fault.

FWIW, these pumps sure do look similar...

Just ordered an Eaton 2 horse 20 gallon compressor to replace my 25 year old home built 2 horse compressor that started knocking badly. The ease of ordering was great, very helpful folks and the compressor shipped the same day. Reviewing their information it seemed like it was the best value of the 110 volt units I could find on the web, by far. Time will tell if it will last of course, for now the buying experience was great and it seems I can get parts at a reasonable price from them if needed in the future, which is one of the pitfalls of many companies I researched that sell similar models.

Would I prefer to buy a 100% American made unit, sure. But I doubt there are any that would be in the price range I was looking at with comparable specs. Made in China doesn't mean it's junk necessarily, I just replaced a 25 year old floor jack that was made in China, that's pretty decent service in my book. Replaced it with a 3.5 ton Arcan jack also made in China. Some of the US options I saw for this jack replacement had much worse reviews than the Arcan which actually had great reviews.

got it today, nice a quiet - 15 minutes break in after filling with oil and then let it run. So far so good! :) I was amazed I could have this arrive at the house 2 days after ordering it.

I was going to pull the trigger on an Eaton...Decided to hold off.
I did talk to the guys at Jenny. Their pumps are made in Sommerset, PA. Jenny bought Emglo (patents, machinery, and workers) years back. I'm saving my pennies to buy their "G" pump and mount in on my 3HP compressor, as mine is dying.

Nice Polar Air compressor.

Very nice small portable compressor. How mush did shipping cost on that....
