Eave closure strip

Has anyone installed an "eave closure strip" to a metal roof after the building was built? My eves have an open section to the outside at every rib. I had the building built without insulation thinking I could insulate it later. From what I've found you are supposed to install a strip of foam UNDER the roof metal when you install the roof panels. Thus sealing the roof to the wall. I just now has an insulation company come in and spray foam the entire building. On the inside of the eaves instead of just foaming the roof to the edge of the eave (which would have sealed the rib holes) and then foaming the inside eave soffit, they boxed in the eave with cardboard then foamed over that. Thus they created a void out of my eaves with open spaces at every rib. This attracts wasps and mud daubers better than a birdhouse does for birds.

I was trying to find some way to add a closure foam or strip or something to seal out the insects from the outside of the building without pulling up the metal roofing to install it.

Brian, May be difficult to compare but is it in the area shown by arrow? I stuck the foam up there during the roof install stage and then there is an end cap that will cover the facia board which is verticle in alignment and goes behind the gutter. this piece has a 90 degree bend that wraps the facia board. I remember fighting the foam as I installed that trim piece. Almost would have been better to install the foam after trim was in place. In my install you could losen the last row of screws and stick the foam up in there then zip the screws back down??. Can't get to it from inside as I have 18" overhang and it is just not accessible.

I used the foam closure strips at the top and bottom of my metal siding (I have a shingled roof) when I insulated the building. I just removed the bottom and top row of screws holding the siding on and slide the foam strips in from the inside, otherwise I would have had to take the siding off to get them in. In your case since they boxed in the eaves from the inside you can't do what I did but you could probably still remove the screws on the outer edge of your roof panels which will allow it to flex up a bit and slide the strips in. If you have the hidden fastneners then I think your stuck with using the foam in a can to close off the ribs.

I would go around with a can of great stuff foam. That being said closure strips would of been better but i was 4 strips short and couldnt access the area very well. So i used the great stuff foam on those 4 panels

Looks like I'll be using the great stuff, foam in a can. I don't think I can remove the screws at the edge of the roof because the roof has been spray foam insulated which essentially glues the metal panels in place. I had the roof and walls foamed and it's amazing how much structural rigidity it adds to the building.

thanks for all the advice,

Brian

Don't think you'll be happy with spray foam in the voids.

It turns an ugly color, and some insects actually seem to like the stuff.
