I was just poking around on AlloyArtifacts and ToolArchives looking at the patent number on the ratchet in that set, and my best guess is that the "Penncraft" set I posted above was manufactured by the New Britain Tool Company - makers of "Husky" - that ratchet looks exactly like my 1/2" drive #CS-45 Husky.
Don't know if Indestro ever had a contract for Penney's. I know they made "Powr-Kraft" for Montgomery Ward for a time, but Montgomery Ward apparently went through at least three different tool suppliers for "Powr-Kraft" in less than a decade, so it would have been fairly limited production.

I didn't know Penney's was ever in the tool business until today when I saw that one above listed - that was quite a surprise. But then, I run into weird stuff every day that sometimes baffles me.

Yes, JC Penney did make sockets and rachets under JC Penney name but they were all really rebadged SK ! Very good stuff but really same as SK of the same era. BUT, very very rare and expensive. If you find anything JC Penney labeled, it will usually go for more than SK will of the same era. I have some Penney wrenches. What I like even more though are older New Britain tools, whatever the final brand name, whether Blackhawk or NAPA or Husky or Penncraft, but some are more average grade and some are really superior grade. The Blackhawk and NAPA seem to be the higher grade versions or New Britain name itself. The Husky or Penncraft seem to be the lower grade versions (but low grade NB is high grade anyone else to me). I have some of all the above. Wardscraft and WardsMaster are so puzzling as to be beyond my comprehension who they sourced from when unless you can tell just by looking. I think Wards liked to resource to someone new every year or two on everything. Like Sears but compressed from 100 years of resourcings down into about 20!

If you are up for it, we need a good Thorsen discussion as I don't know much about them or what they made when or quality levels. I have some and it is ok but not sure I have the best of them or how good they really were. Based on what I have of Thorsen, I'm not really impressed much - just low grade US to me and not in same camp as NB or Indestro or Wright or Proto or Craftsman V or H or Walden or Gray Canada. Socket chrome not generally too good over time. Rachets tough but not really special at all? But maybe I'm missing something with Thorsen. - Paul

These are a super deal! I got a few! Great for electrical box work, with the round needle nose to make a nice wire loop out of for around the screw terminals. Shipping is only slightly more for more pairs than 1. - Paul

I've posted on these before. Cripes has a stock of Wirepro brand on closeout. These were a division of Klein for a few years before shut down. Quality is outstanding, about same as Klein proper. $8 each while they last. - Paul
