^ I picked up a 4749BL a couple months ago - 1/4" drive pear-head - black finish - and I thought it was actually kind of nice. I think they're more prone to surface rusting though - not sure on that one.
Personal preference thing I guess. I think the majority of people feel like you, which is probably why you can grab those black pear-heads fairly cheap.
I think I got that 1/4" model for about $15 including shipping.

(what I'd really like would be a black Duro-Chrome 1/4" drive to match my WWII vintage black-finish set! )

Those WWII ones should be CADMIUM Plated, not black! I have a nice old set of 1/2" drive Mustang sockets Cadmium Plated. Neato! Still work great!! Would trade if anyone collects Mustang as those are rare rare rare and I really don't. - Paul

Hey Pumpman, what do you mean "middle of the curve tooth counts in the area of 40 or so"!? 40 is a FINE tooth count!!! Modern punky kids expect so much more then we ever used to!! :shocking: :wtf:

I think every GJ'er should have at least one or two vintage rachets. They were special then and still are now. I love turning my old SK/Proto/New Britain rachets!! - Paul

Of course 40 is a fine tooth count. I was comparing it to the 88s and 120s that everyone raves about

well... actually... it's a 4502 Duro Chrome set which may well be older than WWII vintage, but it has the "black oxide" finish.

Of course 40 is a fine tooth count.

I have older Walden Worcester and Stevens Walden ratchets that have 20-tooth mechanisms. I'm not sure, but I believe my 1661 Penens has a pretty low tooth count as well.
ALL of the older ratchets were low tooth-count mechanisms, so yes, a 40-tooth ratchet is by definition, a "fine tooth" ratchet.
I suppose it could be argued that the older, 36-to-52-tooth ratchets are "medium tooth" as opposed to the more recent 72-to-120-tooth mechanisms, but some of them are still currently in production.

So that leaves us with "What do we call the new super-fine-tooth ratchets?"
RHSFT? (round-head-super-fine-tooth?)

That makes sense to me 4C! Let's start calling them that on GJ everywhere and see how long it takes the tool industry to adapt our name for them! - Paul

Aren't they more of a pear head?

^That 1/4" drive Proto ratchet is an Italian made Facom. I have a couple of the 3/8 versions and they are very smooth with little backdrag. They are pretty well regarded here on GJ.

yes, and that is the size I still need, the 1/4". No body else bid on this one!! Note, very very similar to the 1/4" SK Facom ones a few days back. I think the internals are the very same.

How do you guys that got the SK ones like them once cleaned out and relubed? - Paul

Well this is strange. This was supposed to be a round head, knurled handle. The part number is right. I guess they use the same part number for pear head and round head???

Also, notice the COO? Bottom line, if it isn't stamped USA, don't trust it. I don't know if the round head is Taiwan also. I guess I'll find out when I get my 1/4" back from warranty.

I find that kind of a disappointment on the Klein ratchet.
A few months back I got these three KLEIN NOS 3/8" drive 12-point SAE socket sets
from an Ebay seller - $21.00 incl. shipping for all three - and they're all US-made. They actually somewhat resemble US-made Thorsen with the little = marks around the size stampings, but they were listed as Klein. But then, they could well have been outsourced from Thorsen, although the broaching doesn't look like Thorsen to me. There is nothing stamped on the sockets or the trays that would indicate Klein manufactured them.

The subject of part number came up in another discussion thread here somewhere. My take on that is that it's much easier for the manufacturer to just keep using the same part number regardless of changes in design (or source) rather than have to make changes to tool display boards, inventory controls, etc..

^ yeah but now you gotta find that missing 11/16" socket to complete the set.

try seller toolandpartcrib

I've had it on my watch list for several weeks but I am having a difficult time justifying the acquisition of more 1/2" SAE socket sets. ;)

Yea, I just wanted the ratchet. I'll probably end up re-listing the sockets/extensions, or just give them to my dad.

This does make me wonder if back in the day when Klein sockets were all USA if Proto made them for them. How long has the Stanley/Proto relationship been going on with Klein? We need someone who works or worked at Klein to help us out here at GJ! - Paul

I can't find any info online about Klein selling that pear head ratchet. Everything i'm seeing is for a round head. I would have said that it might have came out of a socket set, but the ratchet was individually bagged and tagged from Klein.

I guess the real problem is, every seller online uses the same stock photo. Found a couple eBay sellers that show actual pictures of the round-head ratchet though. Not a single other pic of the pear head.
