on ebay, the ground is dirty with 3/4" ratchets. if one was interested in "diving into the 3/4" pool" this would be a great place to start. picking up a ratchet is easy, and cripedistributing.com (as well as ebay) has various sized name brand extensions and u-joints.

Does the chrome-vs-impact question work the same way at larger sizes? With small stuff I generally use chrome sockets, breaker bars and ratchets unless something seems to be really seized, and then I reach for impact.

I guess I'm asking what the advantage is of these chrome sockets over large impact sockets. I guess good impact sockets will cost even more than chrome ($300 for the Grey Pneumatic 9021 15-piece set, which has similar coverage from 3/4" to 2").

What is it like, this 3/4" pool?

it looks shallow, but it tends to pull you in.

once you get that massive ratchet in your hands, you feel like you are finally holding a real tool. holding a socket the size of a baseball also makes you feel like you showed up to do some real work.

the jump from 1/2" to 3/4" is dramatic. the jump from 3/4" to 1" is much less so, almost anticlimactic.

i use 3/4" on a kubota tractor, a cat skid loader, and a mack 6 wheeler dump.

yep, that is what i found. used impact 3/4" were hard to find, and tended to be more expensive. i am also reluctant to buy used impact stuff. dont know why, just am.

If a guy wanted to go low-budget and didn't object to having a box made up of various brands, there are a lot of options for sockets and drive accessories that can be had on the cheap: government/GSA/military contract suppliers like JS Technology, Giller, Thorsen, Easco, just to name a few.

another thing to consider is offering to buy multiple things from the seller. this has worked for me several times, i offer to buy two or three things, usually shipped for the straight asking prices. if he is one of the people who buys lots of things (9 available at this price) i will often make my offer less that the combined asking prices. i tell them to enable OBO on the auctions, and i will offer whatever we agree to, corrected to reflect the shipping prices he is asking. (asking 20$ + 5$ shipping. agreed on 17.50$ as part of a multi-item deal, so i "offer" 12.50$, since that plus the shipping is 17.50$) sometimes we settle at the asking prices with no shipping at all.

of course, some never even respond to the offer, which i consider rude. maybe it is too low of an offer, but the courtesy of an answer doesn't seem like too much to ask.

eBay will auto-relist items that haven't sold, so people often stick stuff up and forget about it (till it sells). It never hurt to contact a buyer if you think their price is high (and they have no best-offer button). Often they will come down on their price, because if they aren't selling they aren't making money.

As for contacting sellers... Stop that! LOL... Most of them are not tool people, but they instantly assume "OLD = RARE = VALUABLE" from watching too much reality tv antique shows.

I do appreciate you posting links to sales. I like to bookmark some of those that are interesting, but usually bidding goes too high for my taste.

Yesterday the bidding starts to move and finally someone hits the reserve at $4500 and the BIN disappears.

The winning bid: $5301.

Okay, that is understandable. Yes, it's like when I go to estate sales and the ladies have NO idea what a tool is and I have to explain to them what it is and what it was used for, when it was probably made, etc... If it's not something I plan on buying and they ask me what it is worth, I will give them an honest answer based on condition and selling prices at other sales & online. Like one I went to yesterday wanted $50 for a small set of SAE Craftsman USA wrenches. We told her there is no way they will get that. First there was only like a dozen wrenches or less. Second just about all of them had *serious* rust (biggest price killer), which when cleaned would pit to bare metal and possibly flake off more chrome. Third they are SAE and most people are looking for metric. Yes they were USA but they were late-models (I forgot which markings) so they weren't anything special. I told her price them at $25 and take the first offer for $20, which even that I think was being optimistic.

Yes, there are a lot of "questionable" activities on ebay, and what is going on behind the scenes we will never know. Sometimes though people don't do their research or even do another search... It just pops up as a recent listing, they want it, they click buy-it-now and don't really realize they are overpaying.

I listed it on an eBay auction for a starting bid of $150, no reserve, with a BIN of $300. Immediately I get a message from a potential bidder, asking me to cancel the auction and sell it to him for $250. I declined. Bidding commenced, and seven days later when it was all over, the item sold for $330. The winning bidder? The guy who messaged me. He could have bought it for $300, but his eagerness for a better deal got in the way, and he paid 10% more than the original BIN.

I don't view eBay as "crooked", but I recognize that my opinions aren't shared by all. As all large corporations, they look out for their own interests, and not necessarily their customers' interests.

My take on this is that the guy heard about my item for sale via eBay, and without them we wouldn't have had the opportunity to do business. And I comply with eBay's terms and conditions - one of which is that you aren't supposed to cut them out by ending the auction early and selling direct. But I'm no eBay cop - I just hold myself to that standard.

At the outset, I made the decision to offer my item via eBay. It might have sold for $150. It might have sold for $300. In fact, it sold for $330. The selling fees were factored into my decision to sell my item via eBay. And when it was all done, eBay/PayPal sent me cash. All my selling via eBay has been cash positive. I wish all my other business endeavors over the years had been cash positive.

I have no interest in getting into a ******* match with someone who dislikes eBay, so if my words cause offense, my apologies. I'm just stating where I'm coming from. And I definitely don't want to hijack this excellent thread debating the merits of eBay.

I'm pretty sure ebay is a flat 10% now except for some of the larger stuff & vehicles...

Which they do that based on item + shipping, because before when it was just item people would sell items for .99 cents, but have like $200 shipping to get around fees.

They used to charge for pictures too, but free hosting sites probably killed that off and they eventually caved and offer it for free (for convenience I guess).

I let most go thru the regular way. 90% of the time. Usually only when I get several offers from the same person that just fall a bit short. I rarely sell anymore, only when it is too odd ball of an item to rid of locally.

10% (+3% PP) is hard sell for me, when everything is done my computers or the seller. Ya, there are a few times assistance is necessary, but few, though more times than not it seems they side with the buyer.

And very few "sales" or coupons for sellers, vs buyers. Where's the love?

i thought driving buyers towards the sellers was "the love".

i understand you think they take a lot. maybe it is too much, but there certainly are a lot of sellers there, although i agree with another comment here that a lot of it seems to be "professional" sellers now. i have been an ebay member since January of 1998. i remember what it used to be like. it is neither better or worse now, it is just different. i remember there being three or four big sites just like ebay at the time. ebay seems to be the only one left. they must be doing something right.

same with amazon. i have also been a customer there since 1998 (was a busy year, eh?). at the time, i remember people being of the opinion that sears or walmart or whomever was going to destroy amazon any time now. but here we are, 19 years later.

i have seen a lot of things come and go on the internet (where i joined in 1984, when it was called the ARPANet. sh*t, i am getting old), being first isn't what makes you a success, doing it "right" does. barriers to entry are low, as is overhead. but understanding what you need to do is hard, which is what will protect the amazons, ebays, and apples of the world.
